DESIGN SERVES was a finalist in the Microsoft YouthSpark Challenge for Change
View it here:Ā https://microsoft.promo.eprize.com/st...
As a finalist, I created the video above to share more about the things that sparked D*Serve and received a new Microsoft RT tablet as well as a suite of resources to take it to even greater dimensions.
What social cause do you care about most? Why?
I lead a team called Catalysts by Design that addresses three intersecting causes: youth poverty and unemployment, socio-economic development, and education. As a transdisciplinary team whose members have championed from living in rural conditions, navigated out of urban plight, and excelled as scholars, designers, K-12 educators, and entrepreneurs, we empathetically use our venture to address these challenges. In America alone, youth poverty and unemployment plague over 16.4 million youth (under age 18), accounting 22% of this population, and currently, youth poverty is the highest it has been since 1993. Poverty is linked with negative socio-economic outcomes in communities, including substandard housing, inadequate health care, underresourced schools and infrastructure, and more. This leaves impacted youth more susceptible to poor academic achievement, less readiness for post-secondary education and high-wage employment, decreased civic engagement, and negative behavioral outcomes.
How do you support (or would you like to support) this cause?
Catalysts by Design, our youth-led enterprise, desires to help organizations, individuals, and communities unlock their creative capacity by utilizing design (graphic, interactive, and environmental designs) and design-thinking methodology to inform strategy in the address of social challenges. Our Design Serves (D*Serve) venture places this practice in the hands of youth living in under-resourced communities. As an initiative supported by the 2013 Clinton Global Initiative University, the D*Serve curriculum equips and entrusts youth to identify the things they deserve in their communities and then use the design thinking process to create, prototype, and actualize their solutions. We currently have pilot D*Serve operations in Cleveland, MS, and St. Louis, MO, with developing cohorts in West Helena, AR, and Greenville, SC.Ā
How would Windows 8 and Office help you do more to support this cause?Ā
Microsoft's Windows 8 and Office 365 would help our team accomplish three competencies more effectively as we activate our cause: project management, production, and communication. New features of Office like SkyDrive will allow us to synchronize how we save works by giving us consolidated file-sharing capacity, while the new easiness of Project 2013 would provide our leaders a platform to efficiently manage projects and tasks. This helps tremendously as many core members of our team travel often to engage with future partners and share our mission, with little means to report on-the-go. TeamSites and OneNote would add to this, allowing us to work together in real-time and produce our primary content--evaluations, curriculum, blog posts, and research. Communication--our greatest expense--would also be met because of Lync's new video-conference feature. This would be transformational for our team as guest designers could connect with youth participants without incurring travel expenses.Ā
