Results: Design Serves Neighborday and Global Youth Service Day
On April 27th, our team at Catalysts by Design kicked off the Design Serves (D*Serve) venture through service in affiliation with Global Youth Service Day and GOOD's Neighborday holidays.
Partnering with the Rebuild Foundation in the Hyde Park community of St. Louis, MO, our team canvassed neighbors for a social gathering and conducted various service activities with Rebuild's developing art space.
The efforts of the day were supported by 36 volunteers, including neighbors of the Hyde Park community and volunteers of the following partner organizations and groups: Brown School of Social Work graduate students, Community Arts Initiative, International Leadership Training Program, Roper's Barbecue, InspireSTL, and Most Holy Trinity School youth. Our team was most grateful for the support of the International Leadership Training Program volunteers, who traveled from Indiana to serve with us and represented 8 international countries. Amongst the group, 7 youth aged 9-15 volunteered with service activities.
Service projects on-site included:
Storage clearing: Volunteers cleared a basement of wood to create space for the storage of art and program supplies for the arts space.
Yard beautification: Volunteers composted wood, organized yard brick stacks, and removed discarded large-sized items from the yard.
Painting: Volunteers painted a chalk wall in the entry of the Rebuild art space as well as primed the walls of the building's social space and exhibition area.
Gardening: Volunteers cleared garden beds and planted various produce, including tomatoes, cilantro, and basil.
Canvassing: Youth volunteers canvassed door-to-door to recruit neighbors and invite them to the Neighborday barbecue social event that proceeded the service day.
The Design Serves Neighborday event was executed successfully with the support of the following sponsors and partners:
Civic Creatives
Rebuild Foundation
Sodexo Foundation
Clinton Global Initiative University
Youth Service America
GOOD (Neighborday)
Brown School of Social Work-Student Coordinating Committee
Brown School of Social Work-Community Arts Initiative

I'm not going to help you lie to the one you "love". Because I need to be able to justify the respect I deserve from the one I love.
