The duality is kinda hilarious... The new trailer for AVENGERS: DOOMSDAY is largely being dunked on within online circles, but the early ticket sales (the film isn't out 'til December) are through the roof... I think it's going to be pretty big at the box office, even with DUNE: PART THREE opening right next to it.
I've had my criticisms ever since the 2024 Comic-Con reveal that AVENGERS: THE KANG DYNASTY was turned into this. It still feels desperate to me, a way to get people coming back after fumbling much of Phase 4 and 5's new characters and stories w/o the original six Avengers. I still think it's incredibly odd to have a Doctor Doom who hasn't appeared AT ALL prior to this movie, save for a very quick mid-credits scene in a single movie... That came out a year ago...
(Yes, I know, the re-release of ENDGAME in a few months will apparently have some footage that functions as a lead-in to this movie, but still-)
I really think they should've delayed AVENGERS 5, if they wanted to pivot to Doctor Doom. Focus on solid standalone movies, THUNDERBOLTS* and FANTASTIC 4: FIRST STEPS especially. If DOOMSDAY *wasn't* coming, those two films would be an indicator that things were getting back on track for the MCU. I particularly liked THUNDERBOLTS*, and had fun with FIRST STEPS. I found them to be like old-school superhero movies in a way, films that weren't too concerned with the larger MCU. FIRST STEPS is literally set in another universe, in the mid-1960s, completely secluded from any Avengers stuff. Sure, THUNDERBOLTS* works off of past happenings, but it was quite contained to those characters and what they deal with in the story... and if the studio weren't barreling towards another two-part AVENGERS epic (DOOMSDAY and next year's SECRET WARS), they'd get solid sequels some time in like 2027/28. Further establishing the characters and their dynamics, the world according to them. Then with that, they could gradually introduce Doom, given what a rich comic book character he is. Done dirty by multiple film adaptations, at that. Is he just... Ahem, "doomed" to be portrayed as just another supervillain in live-action/VFX'ed movies? (I had to, sorry.) Like logically, there should've been a FIRST STEPS sequel next year or in 2028, with Doom in it. Then maybe some other appearances, I think that perfectly sets the stage for him being the next bad guy that The Avengers have to take on. I think a lot of observers wanted something like that.
DOOMSDAY could be solid for all I know, good even. Part of me just thinks they're reducing Doom to a Thanos-lite, an action figure to battle and blast away. And then onto the next thing. All because they decided to not go through with the original next big bad. And then that rumored reset of sorts after SECRET WARS, then having the Mutants be front and center for the next phase. Just sort of spinning the wheel, instead of telling character stories, making the audience care for these people. It was what made the first three Phases of the MCU work, even through its flaws.
But, those ticket sales tell me one thing... FilmTwitter and all those other circles absolutely do not have the finger on the pulse of the moviegoing public, much in the same way all the grifter chuds who were soooo convinced that THE ODYSSEY was gonna flop don't. The looks of utter surprise if/when DOOMSDAY out-opens DUNE: PART THREE will be amusing to say the least. Not that I want it to, but it'll show that the Internet ain't always real life lol.
If you ask me, I think DOOMSDAY easily makes a billion, while DUNE: PART THREE at the very least makes more than what its predecessor made (around $715m).
