Dexter’s naturally a pretty physically affectionate guy but because he’s so emotionally closed off people don’t pick up on it. That man really just wants a hug.
The thing is on a very surface level Dexter is a great boyfriend. He’s this good looking genuinely sweet guy who loves to run an errand and is even good with kids. Sure he’s a bit closed off but early in a relationship that’s well maybe he needs more time. But then he just doesn’t open up. And if you actually manage to brake down his walls well..
The thing about Dexter and Angela’s relationship is that it lacks any real emotional intimacy. True emotional intimacy between them is impossible because Dexter can’t be honest with her about who he really is. Their relationship is emblematic of all Dexter’s relationships in Iron Lake; its surface deep. No one really knows him.
Instead of seeking true emotional intimacy with Angela he relies on a hallucination of his dead sister to get his emotional needs met. Angela serves as a sort of stand in for Deb. He gets the physical intimacy from her he can’t get from Deb. But he’s also not actually getting his emotional needs met from Deb because she’s a figment of his own mind. And of course the fact that he’s not getting his emotional needs met in either relationship is a key part of him developing an emotionally incestuous relationship with Harrison.
Honestly to me what makes a good Dexter love interest is less about whether they’re a good match for Dexter and more about if they’re an interesting character. For instance I love Angela but her and Dexter are not right for each other.

Hi! What's your take on Dexter's relationship with Hannah? I always thought it was very forced and out of character personnally. It kills me lowkey that until the finale he mostly choses her over Deb...
I think they were so focused on making Dexter so in love with her it felt forced and unbelievable. There are aspects to Hannah's character that could have been interesting but they don't really follow through on any of it.
Something I thought was actually really interesting is that ok in s7 Dexter turns to Hannah because he's feeling rejected by Deb. He feels like Deb will never understand him but that Hannah being a killer will. But Hannah isn't a compulsive killer she's a practical killer. She doesn't understand him at all. This is a point of contention in ep10. She tells him the dark passenger isn't real and he just ends up agreeing with her by the end of the episode. And of course this has no real lasting effect he goes right back to believing in the dark passenger. It's such a heavy-handed lackluster episode that fails to really explore the way killing is part of an obsessive-compulsive cycle for Dexter.
I'm not sure why they didn't let conflict like this fester especially because they must have known Hannah was going to try and kill Deb and Dex was going to turn her in for murder by the end of the season.
Maybe this will make me sound like a crazy shipper but I do genuinely think they were originally going to go down the incest path but chickened out due to the backlash. It seemed like the end of s7 was setting Hannah up to be the villain of s8. It would have made so much more sense and she could have been a really interesting antagonist. Instead they bring her back as the love interest but it feels very ooc that Dexter forgives her so easily after she tried to kill Deb (he killed his own brother for that). They also make her more of a damsel in distress in s8. Someone Dexter has to swoop in a save. Also making her the perfect mother for Harrison in a way that also felt forced. They completely stripped away anything interesting about her character and her relationship with Dexter. I think they felt like they had to place Dex and Deb into non-incestuous relationships so they could have the dramatic ending between the two.
Hard agree. Throughout the series, Dexter was established as someone who needed to form a true emotional bond with someone before starting a relationship with them. Even with Lila, it might have been manipulative on her end, but we did see them form a connection. With Hannan he has that basically immediate hyperfixation that feels very inorganic.
They were trying so hard to make them special but it fell flat. When Hannah was kidnapped and Dexter confessed to her he never felt that kind of fear since his mother died in front of him, I’m sorry what? Wasn’t even that long ago that his baby son was kidnapped and almost murdered by a religious nutjob but ok.
Another thing that didn’t make sense to me is that Hannah is a serial killer who has killed people, including innocent people. They wrote her that way presumably so she could understand and accept Dexter. Yet she is also supposed to be one whose love can “save” him? And she does not need to kill so presumably can stop anytime if Dexter stops. It just looked like they tried so hard to make her the perfect girl for him which doesn’t make for a very compelling dynamic. People argue she made him question the “Dark Passenger” but first as you say they don’t do much with that but also it’s not like it wasn’t questioned before. Literally Lila did this in season 2 and Hannah often feels like a knock off that we are supposed to actually root for (Love Lila on my end, great character).
And of course the two unforgivable sins that are that Tumblr fanfic sex scene and making Dexter forgive her for trying to kill Deb while also conveniently later making Deb be fine with her brother dating someone who tried to kill her, after half the season was dedicated to them finding their way back to each other.
And I think you are definitely right about them using her to deter the attention from the incest storyline, that continues in season 8 but toned down so the audience doesn’t riot.
Her killing innocent people to protect herself could have been an interesting point of conflict between her and Dex. Especially because Dexter ends up planning on killing an innocent person to protect himself by the end of the season. If this was a bigger issue between they could have done something actually interesting there. But instead its practically a nonissue until its Deb and even then thats forgiven so easily in s8.
I agree that she feels like a bit of a knock off Lila. But they were not afraid to show how manipulative Lila was. They were not afraid of there being conflict between her and Dexter. I think Hannah would have been a much more compelling character if they embraced her as an antagonist. Instead s8 files off all her rough edges and says look she's the perfect wife and mother and expects the audience forget all the reasons she's not.

ok but imagine trans girl Harrison asking Dexter to pick a name for her (of course she wants daddy to name her) he picks Laura
asexual man’s mommy issues so powerful they make him realise he’s actually demisexual
I love the moment in ep1 when Dexter puts his hand on Rita’s thigh because it’s very demisexual man experiences sexual attraction for the first time and is confused. But we can’t sleep on the fact that the reason he experiences that attraction is deeply rooted in his mommy issues.
Dexter’s subconscious is screaming want to fuck mommy!
Dexter’s conscious is saying why do I want to have sex with my girlfriend that’s weird??

I'm-I'm-I'm sorry I don't know what I did
Harrison tries so hard to be brave during the Kurt kill. He wants to be everything Dexter wants him to be because he loves him so much. He just wants daddy to love him.
I love how blatant they are with the sex/murder stuff with Dexter/Mia because it really has direct implications on Dexter/Harrison
