OTHER INFO:
- Mod pronouns: they/he
- Mod is the mean lesbian everyone warned you about.
- Mod is an adult who will write adult characters do and talk about adult stuff, like doing taxes, committing manslaughter and owning guns. And sex I guess. Nothing explicit will happen on screen, but the references and implications will be there. Children do come from somewhere, they don't just spawn from thin air.
- Vaguely inspired by 'No Delivery', but I took so many liberties that it's separate enough now. I just keep the old name, bc I can't come up with anything different. And they still make pizza.

i think the reason why there are just so many damn cats (250+ in total, around 100 in the end end) is bc i was so fixated on the ending where dozens of them die. so i wanted to make sure that i will have enough cats to do that. but then they kept joining and giving birth and i kept on getting attached.
i got a dude named Oatmilk and he did absolutely nothing. i think he did die along the way. nothing would've chnaged if i removed him but how could i. his name is Oatmilk.
it's probably not that deep, but im curious how people making clangen stories handle kits/newcomers that just happen to look eerily similar to their starclan/dark forest/afterlife guides. just brush it off like 'crazy clangen sprite generation' or does it actually fuel lore and story in any way? not even in a reincarnation way, just.. anything.
good morning! remember every day is a chance to begin anew [breaks off and sits on the edge of the bed staring blankly for 23 minutes before running a hand down face like a tortured movie protagonist] my god where did it all go so wrong

I think people have truly lost any ability to be patient with storytelling.
‘I don’t understand this’ They’ll explain it if you wait.
‘I don’t like how this episode left things hanging’ There’s a continuation next week.
‘This character is flat’ Wait for them to be fleshed out.
So many of the complaints I see about shows lately are people being confused by things THAT THE SHOW WANTS YOU TO BE CONFUSED BY THATS THE FUN OF MYSTERY AND FORESHADOWING YOU ABSOLUTE GOBLINS THE MAIN CHARACTER IS ALSO CONFUSED AND THEYRE GONNA DO A BIG REVEAL AND EXPLANATION LATER IF YOU WOULD JUST FUCKING WAIT
(credits to @/bonefall, @/rippleclan and @/salt-clangen for inspirations)
Also - I don't want to lock them all in a specific climate, so if appearance of some trees or herbs or prey doesn't make sense, then that's why. The only rule I have is no actual tropical fruits/vegetables like bananas or coconuts. For the most part, I put stuff that grows in my country (Poland) because that's what I'm most familiar with.
TRIGGER WARNINGS FOR: transphobia and transmisogyny, misogyny, sexism, torture, religious abuse, cults, child (kit) abuse, spousal abuse, authority abuse, grooming
Intro
The City is so far the oldest group, predating even the Pod in this category. However, the differences between ancient City and modern City are quite massive, almost like they are two different places. However, after it was raided by the nearby, ancient cat groups over a misinterpreted sign and a misunderstanding, the City suffered major loss in population, including their spiritual leaders, which led them to make drastic changes in their structure, putting more focus on strength and intimidation than before.
Modern City is a sore subject to all its neighbors, and cats that were lucky to leave it in one piece.
Background
City is a mixed bag of cats from almost everywhere - have it be Trading Villages, those who left Clowders (mainly Ferret, but also Oat and Mallow) or Coalitions, travelers from Pod, and even those faring from far beyond, such as mountains from far east or marshes from far north. Many of current City cats don't even remember their origins, believing they were always a part of it. Due to their numbers, they only count relations two generations down. Rumors circulate, however, that Eminence is ordering cats to kidnap those from outside, to boost their numbers and to freshen their blood.
A 'standard' family is a pair and their youngest kits below 12 moons old. There are exceptions, with some older cats still living with their parents, but its fairly normal for them to leave their birth house and start their own family as soon as possible. Kits are very often seen as an extension of their parents, meaning if they misbehave, their family gets punished as whole. It puts enormous pressure on cats from their youngest moons, especially when their parent(s) holds a high rank in the City, such as an Enforcer, a White-collar or even a Sage. If they fail to meet the expectations, they can even be kicked out of house earlier. It's also not uncommon for a cat (usually toms) of higher rank to use the power they have to abuse their family members and get away with it.
Compared to clowders, they have more strict views on gender and sexuality, often expecting cats to act accordingly to their birth gender. Changed toms are still expected to give birth to more kits and care for them, changed mollies are still expected to sire litters whenever needed and defend the City against every threat. While they won't face open hostility or be at risk of exile/execution, they are still met with scrutiny, depending on the district and their leading Sage.
Same-gender couples aren't openly discriminated either, but they are still expected to provide to the population, either by getting a honorary surrogate/sire or by forming a polycule.
Territory and Camp
Their territory and camp are one place, being a huge city. They, technically, also 'own' some land around the city walls, where they can freely hunt and gather other resources, although it doesn't stop them from trespassing and hunting on grounds belonging to other groups.
The city as whole is split into uneven 'segments', that are then either ran by a designated Sage (with the exception of 'white'/neutral segment that is mostly ran by Augurs and 'gray' segment that is owned by the Eminence).
(lime green is Ferret Clowder territory, purple is Mallow Clowder territory, dark green are grounds leading to Birch Coalition and pale green are grounds leading to Heather Coalition)
The houses are usually two stores tall, with few rooms to house up to two families. They have access to water, but some don't have access to electricity and have to rely on fire for light. Most houses are made out of bricks and stone, with few that are still build from wood.
Resources and Trade
While they don't have many 'original' resources to offer in trades, their common offers are prey and herbs that can't be found on clowders' territory, as well as crafted goods (that be clothes, furniture, weapons). They rarely trade with clowders personally, and instead take part in the seasonal marketplace hosted by Mallow Clowder.
Code and Faith
They are the center of Stardevourer's faith. In the ancient times, the Moonspire was the primary place of communicating with the Higher Being, and even now, after They went silent, they kept tending the site and praying to Them.
In fact, they as in possession of what Ancients called 'Starshard'. They perform a form of 'baptism', where they soak a cat's head with water that Starshard is submerged in, in hopes of 'protecting their spirits from Vanishing'.
Their 'code' centers mostly around their faith and respecting their Higher Being, and as a result, the group that defines their rules the most are the Augurs. To go against Head Augur's order is like going against their Higher Being's will, which is seen as blasphemous and is always punished (often times the punishment is very brutal, almost disproportionate to the 'crime', as it can alter the 'offenders' body, such as declawing or defanging).
City is fairly big, and as a result they share borders with Clowders and Coalitions, acting as a 'middle ground' between them.
Oat-City relations are neutral-positive, even though they don't share borders. That's because one of their White-collars descends from their past leaders, and he keeps a close relation with his Oat littermate. Augurs openly prohibits City cats from venturing and hunting on Oat Clowder's grounds.
Ferret-City relations are mostly neutral-tense, as they rarely actually interact, despite their hunting grounds overlapping.
Mallow-City relations are bordering on tense, as they often overstep each others borders, and rumors circulate that City cats go as far as 'kidnap' Mallow cats to bolster their numbers.
Coalition-City relations are quite hostile, despite the fact that they both believe in the same Higher Being. Coalitions deem them blasphemous for letting changed cats (especially in religious position) and those in same-gender relationships roam freely around and 'corrupt' their kits, while City cats view them as barbaric and hotheaded.
They are open for letting outsiders join, but are quite stingy when it comes to 'leaving' (unless someone is actually just visiting, like for a trade or to visit the Moonspire).
Roles and Important Names
Eminence - Is the overall leader and figurehead of the City. They do, however, are forced to share power with the Head Augur, whether they want it or not. And they are not free of punishments if they refuse to do so.
Augur - They are the 'spiritual leaders' of the City, and mostly consist of mollies (which does include changed mollies, despite City's stance on their gender). They reside in the Moonspire, the tower in the middle of the City, performing rituals, giving spiritual advice and guidance, as well as offering medical aid to those who need it. However, they aren't as merciful as they seem, with the Head Augur very frequently surpassing the Eminence in how cruel their punishments are (mainly flaying, declawing, defanging and other forms of mutilation). They are the carriers of their Higher Being's will and they will punish anyone who dares to question or disobey it, to extreme degrees. They are also generally disallowed to have kits, but not quite disallowed from having mates (which is often exploited by older Augurs).
Sage - They are cats picked by the Eminence to look after and maintain each City's 'segment'. They are Eminence's court, each represented by a color related to the collars the cats in each segment wear. They respond directly to the Eminence and Head Augur, but still do hold power over their respective segment and its cats.
White-collars - While majority of the City cats wear collars, the white ones are special, as they are specifically commanded by the Augurs. White-collared cats are their soldiers and bodyguards, and must be ready to carry their commands at any time, no matter how gruesome. As a result, they are often derogatorily referred as Augur's 'attack hounds', with how efficiently yet senselessly seem to carry out the orders.
Enforcer - Cat-cops, assigned by the Eminence and Sages to 'watch' over the city. They wear golden earrings to distinguish them from the other cats. They are on par with white-collars in how brutal and ruthless they are, with the difference that white-collars respond ONLY to Augurs, and enforcers respond to all Sages and Eminence, putting them often than not at odds. The general public isn't a fan of them either, as they usually abuse their power and suck up to their superiors for benefits.
Herbalist - Cats that are mostly sent outside to gather herbs, as well as the ones tending the plant stores. They also offer healing services, for either food or other resources, especially to those who are at odds with Augurs and aren't allowed within the Moonspire.
Soldier - The primary defense and offense of the City. They are the first to be sent out to battle and to defend their territory.
Hunter - They, along with Herbalists, are sent outside of the City walls most frequently to hunt and gather food. Given how big the City is, they work tirelessly to get as much food as possible, store it safely and prepare for consumption. Depending on the district, some families fare and are feed better than the others. And sneaking or hoarding food isn't an uncommon sight, but it is a punishable offense.
Caretaker - They take care of pregnant cats and kittens until they are at least 4 moons old (unless they are orphaned, then until 12 moons). Since they lack actual 'student/apprentice system', kits and adolescents are just learning from those around them, and are officially treated as kits until they are a year old. After that, they are considered fully grown and can be sent out to fight, gather, hunt, or even have kits on their own.
Carpenter - They are responsible for everyday objects, furniture and making sure buildings are in livable conditions. They are also tasked with crafting weapons and some pieces of clothes, especially for Sages and Augurs.
Other - There aren't many other roles. They don't have mediators, and their nursing cats are referred by their other, primary roles. No one is also officially retiring.
White-collar vs Enforcer
Whilst the same on the surface, they do operate differently.
Enforcers respond to Eminence and their assigned Sages, and technically to Augurs as well.
White-collars respond only to Augurs.
To become an Enforcer one can just win a Sage's favor, by either offering them food or being, as some call it, 'enough of a tail-kisser'. They often become one to flex on other cats living in the City and to exploit their newly gained position.
White-collars are specifically picked by Augurs and only when they are between 6 and 12 moons old. They must undergo a rigorous training sessions, meaning their training must start young to ensure they learn as much as possible and fast. Very rarely an older cat can become a White-collar, if they were born outside of City walls and a prophet Augur had gotten a vision indicating their potential.
A kit of one or two Enforcers have a higher chance to become one as well, if they are 'recommended' to the Sage.
A kit of one or two White-collars isn't guaranteed to become one as well, and it all depends if they show early potential or if the Augur had gotten a vision of them being one. Otherwise, they become a regular City cat, often being disowned by their family as a result.
Enforcers don't have additional ranks.
White-collars have different ranks within their groups, showcased by their collars. Plain collars are trainees. Collars with a moon plaque are fully initiated albeit average white-collars. One pair of claws are for captains, two pairs are for colonels and three pairs are for generals. Generals are the highest positioned white-collars, who command the group, alongside the Head Augur. Colonels are their elite and most trusted cats, and captains are usually picked first for dangerous missions.
Other
(Ages are accurate as of Moon 13.)
(Silver became an Eminence on Moon 11.)
(Fey is questioning, but given how City views changed cats, especially those MtF, he isn't thinking too hard about it.)
(Marsh is Swampstem's littermate. He was chosen to remain in the City by Linnea, who also ensured he will become a White-collar. She saw it all in a vision. hashtag go white boy go)
sometimes we will get like 'bonuses' or 'interludes' and see what is happening in other groups. but its random and whenever i feel like it. now i felt like it.
this is Marsh, he is Swampstem's littermate and he is very normal. this is a perfectly normal reaction to find the guy who touched your lover. he is also actually the father of Hare, Butterfly and Talon.
also lets pretend he wiped some the blood off his mouth. i really liked the pose, but the blood made it look very goofy.

and here is why you properly plan your clangen story BEFORE committing to it.
no i dont care that that many forests, plains and mountains next to each other might not make sense. this is a world with talking cats that can cooka da pizza.
Yellow-orange border - Oat Clowder. The smallest territory. Mainly a dense forest, but also has an access to the river (that is also a border between them and Sweet Clowder).
Pink border - Sweet Clowder. Technically the biggest clowder territory, as most of it consists orchards and crop fields, and the rest is a river and oak trees.
Lime green border - Ferret Clowder. Territory dense with trees and sparse meadows, with an access to a river.
Gray-blue border - Mallow Clowder. Most of the territory is made of plains, with sparse trees and many burrows. It stretches enough to have an access to river.
White border - City of Andromedae. Most of its 'territory' is the city itself, with some lands outside of the city walls, such as two forests, plains and moors. They also have an access to the river.
Dark green border - Birch Coalition. Consists of dense forest, with little land to spare.
Pale purple border - Heather Coalition. Territory consists mostly of moors, plains and a river. Almost no trees, except for those at the edge with Birch Coalition.
Dark blue border - Gull Coalition. Mostly a beach-based territory, with a lot of dunes and a sizeable access to the ocean.
Light blue border - Pod. Territory mostly consists of beaches and the ocean, but also a massive gorge and some parts of the forest that is accessible on top of it.
Brown border - Trading villages. One near Ferret territory is called Howler's Respite and the one near Sweet territory is Stormstopper.
Red border - Contested territories or otherwise territory with unclear ownership, mostly due to Coalitions not respecting their neighbors (and even each other), their borders and 'neutral' lands. The 'triangle' between the three groups is considered a 'contested territory', but in reality its the part of the land they constantly keep trading between each other. It's also a spot where they can met and discuss their news (sort of a 'gathering place').
(sorry if you've answered something similar before)
with all the positive encouragement you post about it, I'm really considering making a clangen blog. since you have a few, is there anything you recommend before starting? a certain aspect of planning or anything you wished you would've decided on sooner?
Don't apologize, I'm happy to answer! In fact, I'm surprised people are even asking me, I'm just some guy. This is my second comic to even have traction (my first was a Steven Universe one lol)
BUT I shall answer below, and even provide my own personal Clangen Template that I made to track things- for anyone to use!
Firstly: if you want to do it, just do it! You don't have to commit to it forever, or even long, unless you really want to practice your professional ability to push through art slumps/lack of motivation. Especially in the clangen space, it's not taboo to just close/abandon a run you're no longer into.
Now, for more specific answers I guess...
What I recommend:
Keep notes starting from moon 0 if you have any inkling you want to make a blog. This means you may have runs you write several moons of before deciding it's not interesting/connecting/etc that are now useless, but it's better to have those and delete them than to not and have to backtrack ideas.
Pick a main character, or a couple, and stick with them. Trying to focus on all the cats quickly becomes an impossible task, and people won't connect as well as with a rotating cast as they will with a few set characters.
If the main character(s) dies, pick another to take over that role and slowly introduce them into the spotlight well before the other's death. Helps people swap over lol
Actually set up a world for the clan. Where is it set? What're the seasons like? How do they live? How are they different from the other clans, if there are any? It helps you with setting up practices, what characters value, and people like learning about it!
Keep posts focused on the blog. You can post about other things now and then, like life and other projects, but people follow you for a clangen blog in the end and may drift away if you post other things too often. I'd also say avoid venting, personal issues, etc as it can make folks uncomfortable and the blog isn't a diary.
UNDERSTAND YOU MAY GET PUSHBACK/CRITICISM/HATE. This is especially true if you handle sensitive subject matter like abuse, sa, transphobia & gender related issues, etc. If you want to limit this, you will need to turn off anon asks. I also suggest not even replying to them, as attention just brings more messages. It can suck, but blocking and moving on is key <3
What I wish I had done:
Kept the main character design simpler. I love Root, and I can handle drawing her again and again, but if I could have gone back I would have made her design/markings more simple. Find other ways to make cats look different than complex pelts, like weight and fur styles. You'll see me take this into account with later designs.
Cared less about interaction. For a lot of my starting posts, I was watching the number of notes very often and really tied my enjoyment of my comic to that. Truth is, some stuff works and others don't, and now that I am less concerned about that I find it easier to work on it.
Interacted with other blogs more from the start. I didn't realize just how much getting a comment or ask or reblog made me feel seen and happy- and while it's not everything it's nice. So I started doing that for other blogs, and it has led to me making some lovely friends.
Set up a solid genre. I started my blog heavy on horror but did not carry that into later moons because, well, it didn't fit. However that still impacts expectations to new readers- and has left me finding ways to weave it into the story as things go. So if I could have, I would have kept to a genre for the story from the start, but I'm still happy with where I'm at.
AND THAT'S WHAT I HAVE!!! I'm not expert and I have no say on what you want to do, so these are just my personal tips.
Now for the thing some people might be interested in... my personal Clangen Template! Here are previews of it empty and filled!
(Yes those are early notes of Hymnclan)
If you want to use it for yourself, HERE YOU GO! Please please please credit me if you do just by @ ing this account in your pinned or smthn, I worked hard on it! Just go to file -> make a copy.
probably a le controversial but needing to use a middleman to sent a hate anon about someone's blog and work (comic, written story, whatever; whether it's about world building, characters or style) is a little bitch behavior. just man up and go talk to the actual creator. if you don't understand something, just ask them directly. nobody is learning anything from asks left on confession blogs😭
