born in malibu, california; valeria is the only daughter of two second generation immigrants from puerto rico. by the time she was born her parents had already worked their asses off to make sure she had the best life possible... that is to say she's never really faced any struggles. not filthy rich but rich enough where money was never really an issue, never something she had to think about because it was always there.
now don't get her wrong valeria is genuinely a good person... a little bit out of touch? sure! but good nonetheless. she's used to getting what she wants because her parents have a hard time saying no to her ( her dad more than anyone and she knows how to use that to her advantage ).
growing up she didn't face many challenges, if any at all. she went to a nice school where she made good friends, was pretty and smart ( though not really all that hardworking, studies weren't exactly her thing ) therefore fairly popular.
life was easy ( and still is, for her )... maybe that's why she moves through the world as if luck is always on her side, with a big smile on her face like everything will work out in the end. doesn't really understand why some people stress out so much but she does her best to help when she can... as long as it doesn't really inconvenience her.
every single summer while growing up meant a trip somewhere else, until her family eventually found capri and it quickly became the go-to vacation spot. if anyone asked her she'd say it's her favorite place in the whole world besides her own room.
went to college only because it was completely paid for and to please her parents. did ok even though her focus was mostly on making friends and having a good time. manages to get a bachelors in business administration ( her father's choice: an attempt at getting her ready to take over the family business at some point ) and a minor in fashion design ( her choice: thought it would be fun to have to skills to personalize her wardrobe )... though she isn't exactly using any of them in a way that puts her parents at easy about the future.
and it's the future what has her parents so on edge. her carefree way of thinking was... fine before, not optimal of course but she was young so it didn't really matter. now she's older and should be wiser but, well, she's still the same: breezing through life like everything will simply fall into place.
that worry of what will happen to her if anything happens to her parents is what led to what she considers a punishment but is actually an attempt at a wake up call: no more credit card funded by her dad, she has to actually start doing something for herself.
that's why she's currently in capri... if she has to do something she doesn't really want to do, might as well do it somewhere she loves. though it's not like her parents completely cut her off and threw her into the harsh reality of our world. the apartment she lives in is paid for, utilities taken care of; but anything else? that has to come from her own pocket.
she's been working at la dolce vela for a couple months now. chose that specific place because she liked the vibe there and she likes coffee. plus she's half decent at making it too at least when she's actually trying, which isn't often. but it's all actually not that bad. she likes the routine of having something to do everyday so maybe this will all work out in the end too.
the best way to describe her using character parallels would be to say she's a mix of cher from clueless, ashley from just my luck and elle woods from legally blonde.
she's genuinely friendly, can easily strike up a conversation with anyone. she's also very good at reading body language; though she's not overbearing and knows when to back off when someone is giving clear signs of not wanting to be bothered.
due to her happy-go-lucky attitude she tends to come off as a bit dumb or ditzy, and she is the latter a little bit but she's pretty smart when she actually tries. the thing is that she rarely ever does.
knows she's pretty and although she doesn't necessarily think she's better than everyone she does act conceited sometimes; or tends to be dismissive in the way that she expects others to do things for her.
loves animals a lot, cats especially. she owns two and usually carries around treats to give out to street cats. definitely the kind of person to stop in the middle of the street to pet an animal.
serial flirter... LOVES it so much it's actually a problem. the chances of something going beyond that are very very low, mostly because what she enjoys is the tension rather than actually being with someone else. though she's not above hooking up when the mood strikes or someone else says the right things.
