it wasnât until he got closer and the whimpering turned out to be full-fledged tears that rami recognized delaney collins. she had made an impression on him in high school and since then, he never really spared a thought for her. they traveled in different crowds, hardly had any interests that overlapped, and this was probably the first time she stepped foot in the bookstore. it was a surreal experience to say the least and one that the male was hardly equipped for. he stood frozen momentarily, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he fidgeted slightly in place. â oh, yeah, sure, â he stammered, not knowing what he was supposed to do now. he tried to buy some time by glancing at the books surrounding the girl. he recognized the section she was in, but didnât think much of it. the crawling babies and happy families on the covers wasnât something he associated much with and suspected the female didnât as well. or at least that was the impression he got of her back then. figuring that he might as well help her clean up her mess, he hesitatingly came closer and kneeled down beside the book closest to him. picking it up, his brows furrowed at the title. now it became all too clear that she was in fact looking at parenting books. dark irises flickered upwards as he studied the brunetteâs features momentarily and he reached out to grab a few more books, stacking them. â hey, are you okay ?? â the question came out as nonchalantly as possible and made rami feel a bit stupid. obviously, she wasnât okay. â if, uh, you need to purchase any of these books, i can turn the register back on. you can take your time, by the way. iâm not in a hurry. â
her eyebrows dipped, fingers dragging beneath both of her eyes in an attempt to wipe away the hot tears. âno, iâm not okay!â wiping them away was of no use, because they kept falling. delaney pulled her hair off of her sticky face, holding it back for a moment or two with palms pressed against the top of her head. âiâm sorry,â she said, realizing that she had snapped at the employee. âiâm a mess, i know. this is humiliating.â surveying the books that she had left around her before glancing to the ones that he had stacked up, she was only further upset by the realization that she didnât know what books she needed to purchase. gathering up the extras, she added them to his pile and matched his gaze. he was familiar to her. someone she knew of for years, but never really bothered to get to know. she was embarrassed to be seen by him in her current state. âno -- i donât want to keep you here. iâm sure thatâs the last thing you want right now. never mind dealing with crazy girl blubbering on the floor. i can come back --  maybe in the morning. could you hold them for me, maybe?â
coffee had been on zephyraâs mind, prominently over the past few days. having shared a night with charlie over a cup of coffee had her feeling nostalgic over old summer days. she hadnât been paying attention to where she was going, focusing more on texting that what was in front of her, which is why she barely registered when deleneyâs things fell before her. had is not been for her small mumbled apology, zephyra wouldnât even had looked up â or down in this case. crouching down and bending her knees she picked up the pill bottle, frowning as she eyed it. â i fucking hates taking these â pills are always so bland and hard to swallow. â she made another face before handing it over back to deleny, shifting her head to the side. â wait â youâre pregnant? â
âwater makes them go down well enough.â was all delaney said, offering a small smile. she tossed the vitamins sheâd been given into her bag, along with a few additional things -- a few crumpled up receipts, some spare change. it was known to delaney that the girl in her company had also had a baby. sheâd heard bits and pieces of the story of what followed, having shared a mutual best friend with her -- but still knew very little about it. she nodded in response to her question, moving to stand on her feet now. she held the broken bag in her arms, having to cradle it now that the strap was no good. she looked down to it, imagining for a second that it was her baby instead of a purse. it didnât feel right. âi can hardly believe it, but i am,â she mumbled, though her words were very delayed. âoh -- thanks for the help.â
in an attempt to clear his mind and get a much needed breath of fresh air, xander decided to go for a walk around town. with no real destination, he roamed aimlessly, taking slow strides as he observed his surroundings. eventually, his feet led him straight to the coffee shop. an unplanned stop, but he thought he could use the boost of a caffeinated beverage, anyway. just as he swung open the entrance door and felt the cool breeze inside the cafe, a bottle came rolling to his feet. he leaned down and took hold of the item, carefully examining its contents. the owner was easy to spot, as the rest of her possessions were scattered on the floor. but when xander walked closer and got a better look, he realized that the fallen item belonged to someone he knew. âthere you go, del.â he spoke softly, extending out the bottle in his hand towards delaney. between the gossip circulating around town and tristanâs frantic texting, his suspicions were confirmed that the girl was most likely expecting a baby. âso itâs true, then ? youâre pregnant ?â not wanting to make more of a scene, he muttered the words as he crouched to her level and assisted in picking up the remainder of her belongings. he was never one to stick his nose into other peopleâs business, but just out of concern for her and tristan, he had to ask.
âoh, xander -- hey,â delaney greeted, giving a quick, close-lipped smile though she was internally cursing her luck. just a few days prior, sheâd been confronted by tristan about her pregnancy and lied blatantly, confirming his paternity when she knew the opposite to be true. overwhelmed by the guilt she felt as result, she had been avoiding him since -- claiming to be home feeling sick, when the truth was that sheâd just needed her space to sort through the muddled mess sheâd created for herself. she knew the story would never check out now, having run into his best friend out in public like this. âthanks.â her gaze fell to her bag, which she focused on for a moment, allowing the boy to help her collect her things despite holding out on answering his question. when she finally spoke, her words followed a sigh. âyes,â she confessed, pulling herself up to a stand. âi am pregnant.â it was the first time sheâd uttered the words -- even when sheâd discussed it with her boyfriend, she didnât have to hear herself state it directly. it left a sour taste in her mouth. âdid tristan not say anything to you about it?â she asked, looking down to wear sheâd left him crouched. âi mean -- i know itâs not something heâs going to be bragging about. i just figured it may have come up.â
strolling into the cafĂŠ with a content expression illustrated upon her features, zoey was optimistic that this day would be a better than her average day. she had woken up with out any vexation due to a pleasant rest, and now it was time for her morning chai tea latte. however, she wouldnât have said the same for the brunette scrambling to pick up the contents of her broken purse right in front of her. zoey immediately began to kneel down to aid the other, but a bottle of vitamins stopped at her feet. â no, itâs okay, donât worry, â she responded as she picked up the container, her sepia hues taking a peek at the label. a sympathetic smile curled upon her petals, handing it over to the girl. â if i stepped in sooner, i wouldâve help you pick up everything else. i canât believe no one helped you. â she commented, her voice raising in volume at her second sentence towards the nearby customers turning a blind eye.Â
smiling her thanks as received the bottle, delaney tossed the vitamins in her purse and pulled herself up to a stand. she was looking down at the girl that came to help her now, and maybe would have repaid her kindness by offering a hand to help her back up were she not cradling her broken sack of belongings. âitâs totally fine, but thanks anyway,â she chuckled, looking around to see if anyone had reacted to her raised voice. she hoped that they hadnât -- dropping all of her things was already mortifying enough. âeveryoneâs got tunnel vision in this place -- eager for their caffeine fix.â she had to readjust her hold on the bag to accommodate her growing baby bump, which she was less concerned about hiding now that she wasnât alone in her knowledge of the pregnancy. âspeaking of,â she began, taking note of the fact that her companion had not yet ordered and tossing a glance to the line that formed before the counter. âyours is on me if you promise to sit and drink with me for a bit. not to be weird, but youâre like, the best thing to happen to me all day. i could use the company.â

Evangeliya had been waiting in line to order, with delicate hands tucked neatly into the pockets of her white hospital coat. Her hazy focus was snapped back to the present as she suddenly felt a small tap on her foot. Amber eyes searched around, discovering the source of the movement to be a bottle of vitamins rolling towards her, and she immediately reached down to retrieve them. Eva heard a voice mutter, and she lifted her gaze again to focus on a girl who seemed clearly frustrated as she tried to hurriedly gather her things. All too familiar with the feeling of everything in the world working against you, she extended her arm to give back the bottle, offering the other an empathetic half-smile. âHere you go,â she said softly. âWould you like a coffee or tea? Or anything else?â
the voice that spoke out to her was kind, and when delaney finally raised her eyes to face the person, they were met with a smile that was just the same. this prompted a smile of her own, potentially the first of the day, and she offered a small thanks when she reached for the bottle that was held out to her. âiâm all set,â delaney told her, eyeing the name badge that hung from her companionâs hospital coat as she tucked away the vitamins. âi just got myself something, actually.â she lifted the cup that was placed at her side. âi was on my way out when this stupid purse broke,â she paused, struggling to hold both her broken purse and her beverage as she pulled herself up from the ground. â headed to an appointment, actually.â giving a nod to the jacket she wore, delaney raised her brows. âany chance you were headed back? i was going to walk, but it'd be hell lugging my bag like this.â
tristan sat down and put his hand on top of where hers rested on his knee. he felt her hand shaking and wanted to fix it, seeing delaney like this killed him. he listened closely to the points she made. she was right that it would be extremely difficult to keep pursuing her career as a musician with a baby around, and as tears fell down her cheeks while she spoke he wiped them away with his thumb. âyou shouldnât have to give up music, babe. i know how much it means to you and that wouldnât be fair-â he let her keep explaining her concerns, and his lack of commitment was a definite problem. she was right to be worried about his ability to stick around, it was never something he was very good at. when she asked him for a promise he nodded slowly, he moved to cup her face with his hands to keep their eyes locked. âdelaney i love you more than i have ever loved anyone else. of course iâll support you with anything you choose. and if you decide you want to have the baby iâll get my act together and be the father i never had. and if you donât want to keep it, iâll be there with you every step of the way.â he rubbed his thumb gently along her jawline, âi love you and i want to make it work this time. no matter what iâm not giving up on us this time, okay?â he stared at her for what felt like years before he slowly moved in to kiss her. his lips touched hers gently, and even though their situation was beyond fucked up, he still got chills down his back as he kissed her.
tristan was doing all the right things and part of her just wanted him to stop, because she truly didnât deserve a second of it. she had just told the biggest lie of her lifetime and he had no idea about it. despite the inability to turn her racing thoughts or the overwhelming sense of guilt off, she focused her attention on him while he spoke, nodding along with quivering lips and eyes that were still spewing tears. when he kissed her, she closed her stinging eyes. a hand found its way up to the base of his head and she cupped it, pulling him in closer, deepening the kiss. it was the least she figured that he deserved in the moment, finally being the boyfriend sheâd always hoped he would be willing to be for her. when she pulled away, she didnât hesitate to wrap him in a hug. âi love you,â she said, clinging to him. âi love you. iâm so sorry.â -- and she wasnât lying; she was sorry. but it was too late for that now.
safia had gotten suckered into making a coffee run everyone in her wing at the hospital â thanks to the only co-worker sheâd actually asked to pick up coffee for making an announcement to the entire wing that she was going to the cafe â and was on the side, patiently waiting for twenty beverages to be prepared, attempting to get everyoneâs change and receipts organized. she lost her count when a bottle of some sort roll into her feet, feeling a twinge of annoyance over the fact that sheâd have to start over. that annoyance was only heightened when she heard a familiar but grating voice call out to her. â youâre actually capable of apologizing ? color me shocked, â she sighed, kneeling down to pick up the bottle, hesitating when she her icy blues caught sight of the label. â .. these were the same vitamins that were prescribed to me when i was pregnant. i assume this is for the luminous skin side effect they offer, because iâm SURE you of all people isnât pregnant. âÂ
delaney sucked in a breath when she realized who she had the extreme displeasure of dealing with. her eyelids snapped shut for the briefest of moments as she tried to muster up every last drop of composure and calm she had within her. âjust give me the bottle, safia,â was all she bothered to say, unwilling to entertain her in the moment. she didnât make eye contact as she collected a few loose pieces of change. on any other day -- sure. and of course, under any other circumstances. but on the floor of a busy cafe with her belongings splayed out before her, and being confronted about a truth she couldnât ignore any longer, it was hopeless. delaney didnât like being the loser. and the situation was already shaping up to be a loss. âwhether i am or iâm not is none of your business, so please.âshe wordlessly extended a dainty arm, palm facing upward. she raised her eyebrows expectantly, urging her to hand over the vitamins.Â
griffinâs brow arched in surprise, taken aback by the fact that someone in this town had recognized him. it all seemed so distant. his smile dropped a moment later as she mentioned making an appearance on his show, his arms coming to fold over his chest as he gave her a once-over. â so youâre a fame digger, â he said incredulously, his gaze narrowing. the act faded after a few seconds, smiling widely at the girl. â no shame, really. when are you free? â
though her breath may have hitched for a moment, another one of delaneyâs toothy grins emerged upon realizing that griffin wasnât about to reject her not-so-subtle proposal. âa girl that knows what she wants,â she corrected, tossing her long brown locks. âno shame at all.â she gave a shake of her head and giggled. ânone.â with a flash of her eyebrows, delaney paused for the briefest of moments to think over his question. she really didnât have a lot going on at the moment -- but if she had, she wouldâve sacrificed anything without hesitation. âfor you, whenever! i mean it. youâre probably super busy, no?â
âi cannot believe my life right now,â delaney groaned, eyes falling to find the entire contents of her bag spilled onto the ground. she crouched, scrambling to collect it all -- from lip gloss tubes and her wallet to a book featuring a smiling baby on its cover and at least a dozen guitar picks. stopping by the cafe for an iced vanilla chai was supposed to serve as an afternoon pick-me-up, but she hadnât even made it out the door before that was ruined for her. she didnât imagine it possible, but the terrible day sheâd been having up until that moment and suddenly became even worse. the strap of her shoulder bag snapped, strained by the weight of everything she was toting -- and now here she was, on the floor of a coffee shop. she was nearly done shoving her belongings back into her broken purse when she lost her grip on a bottle of prenatal vitamins, which rolled right into an approaching pair of feet. of course. she sighed, her eyes rolling at her own misfortune. âsorry,â she muttered, feeling a combination of annoyance and embarrassment. despite speaking to them, she didnât bother to trail up from the shoes to find their face. âmind grabbing that?â

â because i FELT LIKE IT. it seemed like a NICE DAY to spend outside â whatâs wrong with eating near trees ? â
âleaves shed. bugs fall. squirrels attack -- you can attest to that. a nice day could be just as well spent from the patio, yâknow.âÂ
tristan held delaney close to him, feeling her tears against the fabric of his t-shirt. all of this felt like a dream, like he would wake up in his own bed and everything would be back to normal. he couldnât wrap his mind around the fact that he was going to be a father to a real child. he rested his cheek against the top of her head, squeezing his eyes shut. âwhy were you afraid?â he then realized it was a justified feeling, they were broken up when she found out. he tried to even his shaky breaths as he pulled away from her slightly, âplease donât ever keep something like this from me again. i donât want our whole relationship to be filled with lies.â he pushed a stray hair behind her ear, âi really want us to work this time, especially if youâre going to have our kid.â he forced a small smile, âdo you think we can do this? be parents?â
âbecause i didnât know what to do -- or how youâd react,â she reasoned, the first bit of truth to leave her lips since falsely naming him the father of her baby. she whimpered as he spoke to her. he meant to comfort her -- and he did, to an extent -- but making their relationship work without lies was going to prove to be a difficult task seeing as his desire to was incited by a massive one, delaney knew that. it was at least mildly satisfying that he seemed to be on board with the pregnancy, but she wasnât sure that was something she could say for herself. she moved to look up at him through blurry eyes, taking his hand and leading him to the couch. she pulled him down as she sat, stretching her shaky fingers over her knees. âi donât know,â she said, finally, giving a shake to her head. âi donât even know if i want to. what about music? itâs not like i could tour with a baby.â her crying picked up again at the mere thought of having to trade in her first love for life as a mother. âand tristan, iâm sorry -- but think about it. you can hardly seem to commit to me. how am i supposed to believe youâd always be there for a kid?â her brows were furrowed as she revealed some of her first and truest thoughts regarding her unplanned pregnancy. âi donât know if we can raise a baby or if we should even try. right now i just need to know that you mean what youâre saying -- that you love me and that you want to make this work. i need you to promise to support me no matter what. can you do that?â
griffin arched a brow at her confession â he had a reputation in bordeaux, a not so pleasant one at that, but he was known for his music career and now, being the host of bordeaux radio. still, he didnât expect people to actually listen to him. â really? â he questioned, looking at her incredulously. he recognized delaney. like him, she had a passion for music. he had even listened to her music a few times prior. she was talented, that much was obvious. â people actually listen to the bullshit i spew? â griffin said with a hearty laugh, shaking his head softly. â you sing, huh? there arenât much of us musicians in this town, but i think iâve listened to you before. youâre pretty good, yâknow. â
âare you serious? of course,â she gushed. she laughed along when he did, waving away his comment with a swat of her hand. âsheryl and i can attest to the fact that some people do, but iâm sure youâve got tons more loyal fans. your show is one of the best, trust me.â a smile played on her lips as he recognized her as a musician, and she was beaming when he went as far as to compliment her. âthank you so much -- you have no idea how much that means. or how much itâd mean to play on air with you -- i mean, if youâd have me. just an idea.â
@delcneys
the work was methodic, mindless, allowing rami to dissociate from his surroundings as he began to lock up the shop. he was alone for the evening shift, sending his co-workers home with the excuse of a slow day. in actuality, he wanted to be alone. societal niceties were an irritation he could not pretend to partake in. at least not today. his frustration was overwhelming. exhaustion hung to his frame â the periphery of his mind ghosting over the fact of a possible relapse. it was not that. no. ever since his return to the small county, rami forced himself to mend what he had left broken, but it useless and he was tired. that was it. his key twisted in the lock as he flipped the sign from OPEN to CLOSED. the lights were already dimmed as he walked through the rows of books, wondering if heâd ever truly hold a place among these shelves. in the midst of his charade of thoughtless thoughts he heard a whimper. thatâs when the male broke out of his reverie and passed a row of shelves where he could make out the outline of a femaleâs body. â excuse me ? â his voice came out uncertain, so he tried again. â weâre closed, so uh, do you maybe wanna get out of here ?? â
as most of her reading material was in written in 140 characters or less, delaney had visited literati less times than she could count on one hand in recent years -- yet it seemed like the perfect place to head to. forced to confront a truth that she had long since been hiding-- from herself among everyone else-- delaney needed some time to think clearly for a while; to be alone and make sense of the mess sheâd made. and quite a mess it was -- as if it wasnât enough to finally reveal the pregnancy that she had kept secret, she did so falsely, claiming her boyfriend, tristan, to be the father rather than the rumored ethan, when she knew the contrary. it was a complicated disaster that sheâd created, but she tried her best to rationalize, resolving to deal with pregnancy first and cross the paternity bridge when she came to it. the first part was difficult enough on its own. she didnât know what an average night looked like at the book store, but was satisfied to find that there werenât many people besides herself there that evening. even still, she lingered a little too long around the young adult section, chewing on her bottom lip and blinking back salty, stinging tears. not for anyone else -- but herself, needing to build up the courage to approach the material sheâd come for.Â
gradually, the storeâs occupancy decreased and the lights lowered -- an indication that closing time was a short while away. taking in a now-or-never sort of breath, delaney walked the floor to the parenting & family section, hardly brave enough but still coming face-to-face with the books that contained all of the answers she had avoided seeking out. scanning the titles, she pulled down several of them, sinking to the ground and sprawling them out around her. one set carefully her lap regarded adoption, the one that she chose to crack open first detailing what to expect when oneâs expecting.
flipping through the first few pages, any bit of composure she was able to muster immediately crumbled, and she began to cry freely. it was just too much. she couldnât control her tears nor her breathing, and it was then that she was interrupted. she was caught off guard, snapping the book shut tossing it off to the side. but didnât scramble to  move. in fact, she didnât move at all, bringing a hand down her face and taking inventory of the books around her. at least she had made an effort. âjust a minute, okay?â she replied, voice cracking, not knowing whether to ditch her texts or gather them up. âiâll be out in a minute.â
â never go near a tree with a croissant,â thea said, f r u s t r a t i o n evident in her voice as she removed her torn and stained shirt and tossed it into the nearest garbage bin, thankful for the tank top she was wearing underneath. being topless was the only thing that couldâve made her situation worse. â because a very hungry squirrel WILL attack you, and those little fuckers show NO MERCY. â
âwell, why were you eating near a tree?â

tristan looked at her expectantly as she mulled over his question. she avoided his gaze and shut her eyes tightly as tears fell out of them. he felt himself start to panic, knowing she was pregnant with someone elseâs kid would make it extremely difficult for him to be with her. and the thought of him having to play dad to the kid made it even harder. what he wasnât expecting was what she told him next. he shook his head slowly as he stared at her, âwhat?â how could this even be possible? he tried to go through the timeline in his head, if the last time they had sex was when she got pregnant the time would match up. he felt his palms sweating as he thought about having to care for a child, he didnât know how to be a father, he never had one who was sober long enough to take care of him. he stayed silent for a long time as his thoughts went racing, jumping to the worst conclusions. when he finally spoke again it was hardly more than a whisper, âwhat if the baby gets my worst genes. what if they grow up to be an alcoholic just like theyâre pathetic father.â his voice caught as he said âfatherâ he still couldnât believe it. âdelaney iâm sorry.â
âdonât say that,â was all she managed, dismissing tristanâs parenting concerns. she didnât want to hear him talk that way about himself. especially when she wasnât sure theyâd have to worry about the child growing up to be anything in their care. when the child wasnât his to begin with. she felt terrible. delaney had done some pretty ugly things in the past -- when she felt threatened or vulnerable, when she hadnât gotten her way -- but this was wretched. lying to a man about a baby that wasnât his to keep him involved with her was a new low -- and she felt despicable. beginning to cry even more so now, though it likely didnât seem inappropriate given the subject matter, she had chosen her story and needed to commit to it despite her regret. stepping forward to close the gap between herself and tristan, she fell into him, her arms slipping through his. âiâm sorry,â she spoke against his chest. âiâm sorry. iâm so sorry. i should have told you sooner -- i was just so afraid.â
