'Vikingar!' Viking Experience, Largs, Scotland
🔮 Hello, I'm just a human with a head full of gods 🌿
Hey everyone! 👋 Welcome to my little corner of the internet.
This is a very simple, slightly terrifying "hello" from a wannabe fantasy writer who finally decided to stop daydreaming and start typing. You can call me N.D. Mythos, which, frankly, sounds much more exciting than the reality of me staring at a blank screen.
The World I'm Building (It's a little messy, a lot epic)
For years, I've carried this huge, sprawling world in my mind, and honestly, it’s a bit of a chaotic party. Imagine if your history textbooks were also your fantasy novels. I'm hitting the rewind button on our world and asking:
What if the Old Gods, and so the Celtic, Norse, Roman and old Greek—never left?
I'm talking about a world where Odin and Zeus just watch over the earth, but a Roman legion is clashing with a Viking raiding party over whose rituals are "correct." The Gods are a shared, undeniable reality; the conflict is entirely about worship, tradition, and devotion—not belief. And yes, all the mystic creatures are real too!
I'm exploring how these wildly different cultures—the stoic Romans, the fierce Celts, the seafaring Vikings, the philosophical Greeks—don't just coexist, but also clash, trade, fall in love, and make bloody war. How does a Vikins react to a Greek temple's dedication? How do the Celtics feel about sharing the same harvest festival with the Romans? The possibilities for divine drama without the actual fighting gods are endless.
Facts About Me. Like the real life stuff
I'm just a regular person trying to make time for magic. I'm a Dutch mom, and my biggest current challenge is writing a dramatic battle scene while simultaneously making sure no one puts peanut butter on the remote control.
I was born before the year 2000, which means I remember a world before the internet was in our pockets. I guess that's why I love looking back in time so much!
I'm an atheist—which might seem weird for someone obsessed with gods—but I think that just means I see these mythical figures as the ultimate characters: powerful, flawed, and incredibly human.
What to expect on this blog
I'll be posting stories, world-building scrabbles, and just general musings. Here are a few things I've been working on lately that might pop up:
Monster Manual Snippets: The folklore and creatures are just as important as the gods. I'll be sharing details on my version of Kelpies and Drakons.
Culture Clash Deep Dives: For example, how does the Roman concept of pietas (duty to family, gods, and state) survive when the gods you're devoted to are literally fighting each other?
Writing Progress: This is a safe space for my little wins and big failures! (Spoiler: I've rewritten the first chapter about 12 times.)
I'm super excited to share this journey with you. Let me know what your favorite ancient mythology is in the comments!
