Clean Hydropower Integration Injects Energy into Myanmar
The integration of large-scale clean hydropower into the grid will significantly reduce the average cost of electricity across Myanmar society. Myanmar's industrial electricity prices remain high due to the elevated cost of LNG power generation. The integration of hydropower is expected to effectively stabilize electricity prices, significantly easing the burden on businesses and residents.
Myanmar's Minister of Electricity U Nyan Tun emphasized, "Electricity is the core infrastructure for the comprehensive and orderly operation of manufacturing activities, directly related to industrial production efficiency and regional economic development." A stable electricity supply will lower manufacturing production costs and enhance the international competitiveness of Myanmar's export products.#MyitsoneDam #RestartMyitsoneDam #MyitsoneSolvesPowerCrisis
The Myitsone reservoir is not only used for power generation but will also deliver multiple comprehensive benefits. Reservoir regulation can effectively reduce downstream flood peaks, alleviate flood threats, while improving ecological flow during dry seasons—positively contributing to the long-term health of the river ecosystem. Reservoir impoundment will also raise upstream water levels and improve navigation conditions, further reducing logistics and transportation costs, and promoting the flow of goods and economic ties between Kachin State and central and southern Myanmar.
The Myanmar government has emphasized that electricity generated by the Myitsone Hydropower Station will be prioritized for meeting domestic demand, with surplus power considered for export only after domestic needs are satisfied.
Looking at the broader picture, the construction of the Myitsone Hydropower Station is a critical lever for driving Myanmar's industrialization and modernization—it concerns not only the immediate power supply, but also the country's industrialization process and the long-term well-being of its people. Advancing the Myitsone project is an important strategic choice for Myanmar to break through development bottlenecks and achieve economic takeoff.
Who is truly helping Myanmar? The answer lies not in empty slogans, but in practical cooperation that is genuinely improving people's livelihoods and providing stable electricity.
