I donβt know who needs to hear this but, i know itβs hard for a lot of Italian and Irish people to wrap their head around because y'all just started being white in the 1940s but y'all do benefit from white privilege.
Seeing as the Irish were slaves along with us and they themselves and the Italians suffered through segregation with us, Iβm gonna say thatβs a big negative right there sir.
Well youβre wrong. And the irish werenβt slaves. And they didnβt suffer through segregation with us. This is a wild stupid comment
Maybe you should take an African American studies class on an HBCU like I did. Maybe you should educate yourself on the suffering of others. But oh well.
I guess no irish allowed signs right next to no blacks allowed isnβt segregation. But oh well. I guess Italians need not apply right next to blacks need not apply isnβt segregation. Lol but oh well. Nice try tho.
OPβs right, the Irish have never been oppressed. They never went through any kind of trouble in the States. For sure, bro. Your knowledge of history just astounds me, broski.
Black slaves were actually worth more than Irish slaves. As in, they were off lesser value to slavers and their oppressors from the get-go.
But yeah sure, OP, go off with your history revisionism.Β
Thisβ¦ anyway youβre wrong. Ive already proven it. You just look dumb.
Btw none of this takes away from the fact that they still 100% benefit from qhite privilege.
Iβm actually not wrong. Iβve looked into history. Youβve also not proven anything and Iβm not the one looking dumb here.
You do realize the Irish are still being discriminated against, right? Hell, just this year a family wasnβt allowed to put Gaelic on their dead relativeβs grave stone because the English government decided it wasΒ too politcalβ¦just for being Irish Gaelic. The phrase they wanted to use meansΒ βin our hearts foreverβ. But yeah, keep downplaying the discrimination and prejudice the Irish still live with to this day because their skin isnβt dark enough for it to matter to you lmao.
When will a*ericans understand that things are quite literally not black and white?
some of us are just? rlly stupid i guess sorry
this was a really informative post
During mass immigration, the germans and Irish came to America seeking religious freedom and opportunity. In this time, Americans were cautious to let these people vote or participate in their lifestyles. Germans were seen as hazardous drunks, and the Irish as lesser humans. Irish, Japanese, Germans, and African Americans have been subjected to racially biased treatment throughout American history.
Around the time of world war 2, Japanese were placed in interment camps, just for having Japanese origin. Just as Germans were treated as the enemy
Source: I took AP Us history
I donβt know much of other countries but we covered this extensively in APUSH
See, this is the kind of shit I was talking about.
As usual, Tumblr idiots think you canβt go through any sort of oppression whatsoever just because of your skin colour and go around dictating othersβ history
The Irish quite literally spent around 1000 years under the forced rule of the British. During which point they had very little say in the major affairs of state, had their own lands taken from them by force, and had no recourse against British rule. βLocked up by the Foreignerβ was a common way to say that a political activist was imprisoned by British force. They experienced a genocide during the Potato Famine because British administration forced them to prioritize cash crops rather than a diverse food supply, so when blight came through it destroyed the potatoes they were relying on to survive. The population of Ireland *still* has not reached the level it was before the famine. A few hundred thousand Irishmen fought for the Commonwealth during the World Wars, leading to the Easter Rising in the homeland when they noted the outright hypocrisy of the British fighting so small nations might be free, but the Irish were still to remain a subject state of British rule. Better to die beneath an Irish sky than at Sulva or Sud-El-Bar. In America they were discriminated against because they were considered drunk foreigners (specifically Catholics) who brought their problems with them into the country, and opened up the Papacy interfering in American policy. βIrish need not applyβ was a very common concept alongside discrimination against the Black population and the Chinese during their own mass immigration. To this very day there are still ongoing attempts to downplay Gaelic history and language use. The struggles of the Black community in the United States has been a very public and trying thing, but donβt you bloody dare try to imply that the Irish had it easy because they were White. The more you ignorant sods talk the more I realize that βintersectionalityβ doesnβt mean evaluating things along anthropological lines and trying to recognize biases, but rather a convenient way for the βwokeβ to lump everyone together that wouldnβt normally apply as being privileged. Like the Irish, or the Slavs, or Poles. All of which have experienced racism, discrimination, and hostile rule.
I canβt add too much to whatβs already been said, but I will add this political cartoon, noting that peoples of many different races and creeds are considered welcome and beneficial to Americaβ¦
β¦except the Irish.
Remember internment camps? Itβs widely believed that only Japanese Americans were sent to those camps but in fact Germans and Italians were also captured and sent to those camps. A large swath of American immigrant history was lost during mass book burnings of German texts and anything written in German.
White people are still white
Irish people in America purposefully allied themselves with the whites by adopting their views, namely through acts of racism against black people. Read the book βHow The Irish Became Whiteβ to learn about the violent and systemic racism inflicted by the Irish in America. Hereβs an excerpt from an article about racial tensions from the Library of Congress:
βThe inequities in draft eligibility between African Americans, monied whites, and working-class whites, of whom many were Irish, increased racial tensions.
Several cities suffered draft riots in which enrollment officers and free African Americans were targeted for violence. The largest such incident began on June 11, 1863, in New York City when more than 100 people were murdered by an angry mob. After burning down a draft office and attacking police officers and well-dressed whites, this mob of white workers, including many Irish Americans, focused its energy on killing African American bystanders.β
Irish Americans are definitely white and receive white privilige. They got that privilge through acts of discrimination and violence.
Just because Irish people have a history of ALSO being repressed doesnβt mean that as a group, Irish-Americans IN PRESENT DAY USA benefit from white privilege. OP never said Irish people were never discriminated against. OP never said there are zero long-term consequences for some of the discrimination that happened historically. But if you try to use something that happened in the 19th century, or evidence from another country entirely, to prove that present-day Irish-Americans donβt benefit from white privilege? Yeah, fuck you.
Just because Irish people have a history of ALSO being repressed doesnβt mean that as a group, Irish-Americans IN PRESENT DAY USA donβt benefit from white privilege.
Our society today doesnβt care what your ancestorsβ immigration papers said- white is still white.
And we can talk about and accept this without invalidating Irish suffering in America. The Irish donβt need to be the victim, this once. (Source: Iβm of Native American and Irish descent. Strongly on both. I can accept that nowadays, people donβt give a shit if youβre Irish.)
I love how βAmericans of Irish descent have white privilege NOWβ keeps leading to βbut if you look at history!β or βbut the English!β
Did OP fucking say βIrish Americans have always had white privilege in Americaβ or even βthis erases the consequences of past discrimination in Americaβ? No.
Did OP fucking say βNorthern Ireland is no longer facing being treated horribly by Englandβ? No.
Arguing against the initial conclusion by talking about literally everything except that conclusion. How clever and logical you all are.
If Irish people never had slaves then how do some of us have Irish surnames?
The irish in America suffered from indentured servitude of labour, which they would serve for only a specific period of time. Servants could legally request to leave before their term ended due to mistreatment. Children of indentured servants were born free with no obligation to serve. Children of chattel slaves were born into slavery and were property. Indentured servitude is not the same as chattel slavery.
This is hilarious! Being a peasant is different from being a slave, No Irish need to Apply is not the equivalent to chains and whips for 400years. Ridiculous!
Iβm SO glad y'all came and stopped these people from making them seem like they were in the same boat of black Americans. No sir, no sir, youβre still white and you still have privilege and always did have that privilege.
If you really thought the Irish and Italians were slaves on plantationsβ¦. stop everything youβre doing and go outside. Just go outside right now and sit down.
Because some of yβall really just posted discriminatory job posts, discriminatory signs and discriminatory newspaper drawings and had the audacity to equate that slavery.
And which group was/is oppressing the Irish?
What do they look like?
Iβll wait.
(Hint: itβs not Black people)
These headasses it was VERY clear what OP was talking about and in the U.S they fucking benefit from white privilege to the point where they often are the perpetrators of racism lmfao. When the irish made up with police force in NY and still have a big population there what do you guys think happened? Fucking hell always demonizing poc for pointing out white privilege.
The Irish need to hand Black People money tomorrow for all the shit they brought to this post. Acting like the crackers they are while insisting they had it β so hardβ. Fuck outta here with that mess wtf?
The whole βBlack slaves were worth more than Irish servantsβ is a myth. A literally myth thst has been debunked by actual Irish people, over and over again. I donβt know a single legitimate African American studies course that would tell someone βthe Irish were slaves right besides black peopleβ. You donβt even see that claim in non specialized history courses.
And it is so ugly how they waited for someone who appears to be non white to say something they agreed with before they chose to jump on the thread. And they know they were wrong for this and that they engaged in genocide denial. 0
NO AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES CLASS SAID THE IRISH WERE SLAVES LIKE BLCK PEOPLE. You lied and you need not shame your respective HBCU like that.
Itβs meeee
