Obsessed with Opla Zoro and his emotional support imaginary Mihawk who just bullies him.
he doesnt get it :/
I feel like I haven't seen a lot of discourse around Iron Lung as an exploration of mental illness. Maybe I've just missed it, but the first time I saw the movie, all I could think about was how familiar it felt. Not cozy, obviously, but eerily familiar. It was like seeing what it feels like to loose yourself in your own mind in such a visceral way that was neither romanticized nor pitied, but just, was.
I know Mark has famously done some really stupid experiments with his sleep patterns, and not sleeping, and whatnot, and it just makes me wonder how much of the hopelessness, hallucinations, and in-and-out of body moments in the movie were informed by personal experience.
It just felt so honest and genuine and similar to when I used to not let myself sleep for days on end, repeatedly, when my mental health was at it's absolute worst. (Don't do that, kids.)
Maybe that was intentional, maybe it was really obvious to everyone else, but I thought it was very interesting. The progression of hopelessness, paranoia, and swinging wildly between giving up and holding on for dear life. What a ride.

okay that's cool
30+ year old trans women my beloved
Everyone say thank you 30+ year old trans women
iron lung is good because on one hand it's like "hey if there was an ocean of blood and we threw a guy down there would that be fucked up or what" but also it's about humanity and the want to survive and the need to survive and what is worth the cost of a life but it's also about the inhuman treatment of criminals and where we draw the line but it's also about simon saying "it's bigger than me" during his self sacrificial act for humanity it's also about "you deserve your freedom. i'm sorry i can't give you that." it's about oh my god i love cosmic horror it's about seeing such an incredibly beautiful and artistic and human and independent film prevail it's about everything and it's about what you are when you're left at the edge of nothing. so yeah the movie is ok
One of the things I haven't seen talked about with Iron Lung yet is the way Simon visually figures things out with the map. Like not once is there any dialogue about the map aside from coordinates being given, but the physical actions of the character speak for themselves. And the sequence of Simon taping the map onto the wall and extending it by hand? Absolutely phenomenal. It really speaks to the character fighting to survive even though someone else might have just said, "Well. I'm dead," and given up. There was no reason for Simon to think he would survive being dragged off the map, but he just couldn't give up.
This is one of the things that I could see some people not liking, but I really appreciated it because it showed the audience so many things about the character without explaining literally anything.with words.

Iron lung shirtless scene explanation:
Argument A: The harness represents how much Simon has lost his autonomy and how trapped he is in his circumstances. Even in his most bare form, he cannot exist for himself; the value of his life is determined by the people around him.
Argument B: Mark wanted to put some fan service in his movie and the harness accentuates his marky milkers
listen, Mark didn't JUST spend years creating a beautiful piece of eldritch art that proved indie film makers can create pieces that audiences respond to as much as they do to huge studio productions -- he also got his tits out on the big screen
Shout out to the TWO set medics on Iron Lung
After seeing what that man put himself though I bet they had only one and partway through filming they were like "yeah this guy is a hazard, can we get another in here?"
