there's a weight in his chest tonight. as familiar as it is cloying. it would have been all too easy to get a bottle and drink himself into oblivion in some motel room. instead, knox is sitting in a dim bar nursing an expensive whiskey on rocks. from a jukebox somewhere near the back a bluegrass song drawls softly interlaced with a quiet hum of conversation and the occasional clink of glasses. most of the patrons are older, and minding their own business. one woman sticks out like a sore thumb, but knox has tried to keep his gaze respectful. when her goldenrod hair pops into his view, knox realizes she is speaking to him. quietly, steely eyes follow her thumb to the pool table. he can’t help the smile that follows.
