“That makes perfect sense.”  Moving on to clean and suture some of the smaller wounds, Claire couldn’t help but smile.  “I worry about stuff like that more now, too; even if I’m just crossing the street, we’ve got all this new stuff to think about because of Paul.”  Of course, she wasn’t out risking her neck every night, but she knew what it felt like to always have a thought in the back of her mind about whether their son would be okay if something happened to her.

“You know it’s okay to take less risks out there now, right? I’m not saying stop, because I know you wont - but maybe find other ways to do things? find some more cops you can trust, let them take some of the burden.”

“Cops can’t do what I do. Not without getting in trouble.” Not to mention, Matt doubted many of them would actually agree to work with him, and Matt wouldn’t really want to trust just anyone. “Most of them hate me anyway. They’d most likely turn me in and get a promotion.” And Matt wouldn’t even blame them for that. Legally speaking, he was a criminal, just one that wasn’t on most criminals’ side.

“I’m sure you now … good guy, bad situation, so I’m like … ninety percent sure he won’t shoot you,” she said, “Which I get. Like I’ve been there, but it doesn’t mean you know it’s cool to be kingpin,” she said, closing her eyes as she lied on the floor. “My address is 211 E 62nd St, the access code to get into my house is 108865,” she said. “I don’t have a key, just you know … a code pad. It takes longer to break than picking a lock. so there’s a fun tip for you,” she said. She had to admit she was … touched. She in no way was going to bother her mother in queens, especially since she was still caring for her father in the end of his life. She didn’t mind bothering Daredevil. “Pedialyte, and your cute smile should make a girl feel better.”  

There weren’t many times that Felicity flinched back from Matt, but this was one of them; the blonde over at their daughter in her stroller, glad that Matt’s outburst hadn’t woken her.  “For someone who’s supposed to be fine, you’re doing a pretty crappy job of looking like it.”  She was already used to the way he would close himself off sometimes, especially when he was hurt, but this felt like something different.  “You don’t need time alone, Matt, you need help.  You need to let the people who love you, help you.”

“I don’t need help.” Or, more accurately, he didn’t want help. He had a lot of it since he woke up, and he hated it. He knew he shouldn’t, but losing nearly all of his radar sense hadn’t been doing much to improve his mood. “It’s not the first time I’ve been this bad, it’ll pass.” Matt himself didn’t really sound like he actually believed that, so he wasn’t sure how well it would work on Felicity. “Just… let me deal with it, alright?”

“Matt - I’m not babysitting you.  I didn’t know if you were alive or dead for a week .. I’m here because I want to be here, because I need to be here.”  She could see why he probably felt like she was babysitting him; Felicity had barely let him out of her sight in days, and she only left him when she had to take Grace home to put her to bed.  “I know you’re doing better, but I wanna help.”  

“Well, you don’t have to, I’m fine!” One look at him from anyone who knew him well enough would make it very clear he wasn’t fine. He barely even left the bed for most of the time and just acted distant or angry when he actually bothered to say something. He felt terrible for putting Felicity through all of it, but it only added to the long list of things he currently felt terrible about, and that didn’t do anything to improve his mood. “I just-- I need some time alone, that’s all.”

“Well, it’s definitely not a lot of fun,” she said, tucking the burner phone she used to stay in contact with Daredevil to her ear. Felicia slid down to lay on the floor of her bathroom. The tile felt cool and soothing. “I think if I just drink a lot of fluids won’t die. But I will not be able to go with you to Harlem tonight,” she said, closing her eyes. “I’m going to give you my address,” she’d been pretty reluctant to disclose her identity until now, but for better or worse she trusted him. “If you don’t hear from me tomorrow, do you think you can swing by and make sure I didn’t die?”

Claire stopped in the middle of stitching the wound on his shoulder to peck a kiss on Matt’s lips; after all this time together she was more than used to patching him up, though it had been a while since he’d gotten an injury this bad.  “Haven’t you learned by now you don’t have to say sorry? Unless you wake Paul up - then you’ll have to say sorry.”  Glancing at the baby monitor on the coffee table, all she could hear was their son’s steady, soft breathing while he slept.

“It’s not like you to not pay attention out there.  Something on your mind, babe?” She tied off the last stitch, satisfied that at least the worst of his wounds was patched up.

Matt shrugged in response. “I don’t know, just the usual.” It wasn’t a lie. There was usually always something bothering him, though it hardly caused him to get an actual serious injury these days.

Abi hadn’t even realized the guy was following her until he grabbed her purse strap off her shoulder and yanked the purse away from her, running before she’d even caught up with what was happening.

“Hey! that’s my purse! That guy stole my purse!”

She’d only been in New York three days, and she was already being robbed; even Star City hadn’t been that bad.

Most of the time, especially as Daredevil, Matt’s mind was tuned to anyone screaming for help in any way. So hearing about a stolen purse just a block away was nearly no effort. 

He made his way to the alley the robber ran into. It was a very brief fight, and the man was laying unconscious on the floor in a matter of seconds. He grabbed the purse from the floor and walked over to the woman standing at the entrance of the alley.

“No, I can do it on my own, don’t worry about,” Honestly, he probably shouldn’t. Maggie made it very clear he shouldn’t be moving around too much, and changing his bandages on his own surely would qualify as moving around. “I’m doing a lot better, you don’t need to babysit me anymore, I promise.”

He really hadn’t intended to end the night bleeding out on their couch. That was pretty much what he tried to avoid the most these days. Of course, Claire had been patching him up for years now, but it didn’t make him feel any better when he had to drag her into this. “Sorry about this. I guess I wasn’t paying as much attention as I thought I was out there tonight.”
