I'm K (she/her), just someone in her mid 20s posting from somewhere in Germany. I have studied something theoretical and language-related but am now doing something practical and theatre-related. As you may have guessed, I love (and often post about) languages, theatre, science and art, but also D&D, cats, autism, lgbt+ things, and other stuff. I'm not actively involved in fandom, but I do consume media(tm) and occasionally post/reblog stuff about it: my favourites are The Lord of the Rings, Star Trek, and Community, plus you can usually tell what I just watched/read. I enjoy overusing slashes and the (tm) symbol.

I try to consistently write image and video descriptions and tag them as #described. Newer posts without image description will be tagged with #undescribed, older ones sometimes aren't. If I suddenly reblog a bunch of your old posts they were probably sitting in my drafts waiting to be described.

For me, the most embarrassing symptom of my autism – the one I'm least likely to try to explain in conversation, the one I'm afraid I'll never make peace with, the one I genuinely wish I could lose – is my face blindness. And it's not even complete or severe face blindness, no idea whether it even meets the diagnostic criteria. I recognise my friends and family, even after a drastic haircut. I recognise most of my teachers and coworkers. I can even picture them vividly in my mind. But it takes such a long time for people to get there, and there are people I still confuse with similar looking people even after months of seeing each other regularly. I have fellow students where each time I see them I actively have to remind myself which quantitiable features distinguish them from others. ("Linus has attached earlobes, so that must be Felix.") I know people I took days to recognise again after a dye job. I know people I recognise in a familiar environment but not if I meet them on the street. I didn't recognise my next-door neighbour when I met her in a supermarket queue, less than 200m from our houses. Whenever I meet the two producers of the play I've been assisting with – both young women with long, smooth brown hair and on top of that also near-identical names – I look at their WhatsApp profile pictures beforehand, and I still almost switched up their greeting cards today.
On top of all that, I am also terrible at noticing and remembering changes to people's appearance. So often have I complemented people on seemingly new haircuts, piercings etc. that – turns out – they had had for weeks, that I have almost completely stopped commenting on people's appearance at all.
It's not the end of the world, and I don't think others notice it as much as I do, but it's still frustrating, and it alienates me from people. It has made me paranoid about spontaneously using people's names even when I'm more or less sure I have recognised them correctly. People greet me by name, I greet them back without theirs, and then I'm afraid they think I've forgotten, when in fact I haven't, I know all the names of all the people around me, it just takes me longer than a split second to correctly assign the names to the faces I see.
This take is definitely too hot for a lot of fans but I’m gonna say it anyway: Sherlock Holmes is a canonically queer character. What type of queer he is is up to interpretation, but he is canonically, explicitly Not Straight, and people who write him as an allosexual hetero man are the ones who are actually projecting their own headcanon onto him.
I’m 100% serious. Here are the canonical facts we have about his feelings on sex/romance:
- He says multiple times that he is not interested in women. When Watson comments on the attractiveness of a woman, Holmes responds that he “didn’t notice”.
- He is uninterested in marriage and remains a bachelor his entire life, and never expresses any regret or sadness over this.
- He states that he has “never loved” (in this context it is implied that he is specifically talking about romantic love.) He repeatedly expresses disdain for romance in general.
That’s IT. That is ALL the canonical information we have about his sexuality. We know that he is capable of love in some sense, and Watson even explicitly says that Holmes loves him. But we never see any evidence that he has romantic feelings for women.
Any interpretation of Holmes as a heterosexual man directly contradicts all of the evidence we have about his sexuality. It assumes that everything he or Watson have ever said about his feelings on romance is a lie. The only interpretations of him that actually fit with all the facts are if he’s aroace, gay, or some combination thereof.
Anyway I’m going to start referring to straight interpretations of Holmes as “straight headcanons” now. Holmes is canonically queer.

something that's always stuck with me is Adorno's critique of liberal research on fascism - that liberal scientists believe you can approach fascism in good faith by simply asking Nazis what they think about the world and then writing it down. He argued that fascism is itself a bad faith ideology, and that Nazis will not usually answer the question "do you want to exterminate all minorities?" truthfully, especially not when asked by academics (who are all Marxists/Jews/etc plotting to destroy civilization). So in order to accurately capture fascist sentiment, you have to conceal your intentions and basically lie to them. And there are real moral imperatives for social scientists to do this, in the same way that journalists go undercover in white supremacist groups to report on their activities and beliefs. There's even that famous East German documentary where the directors lied to a Nazi military leader about being West German filmmakers, got him drunk, and then just filmed him saying Nazi shit lol. So like the conventions of science itself, the idea that good research is necessarily always transparent, is a political assumption that shapes how you conduct research and acquire knowledge
