Hi! so, this post is about the animated short that I recently made, Pei!

First off, the idea of the main character is based on the philosophy of the yin and yang the head of Pei and its counterpart are shaped like the yin and yang on the xiantian taijitu, along with their colors, Pei is the yin, a calm and shy being, however, he is a lost half, and feels incomplete without its yang, this is also based on one of the rules of the Yin and Yang, they are codependent parts and one cannot exist without the other.

The actual short is about human relationships, I made the characters so that you especifically can’t tell many details about them, exept their personalities, so that you can’t tell their gender, their occupation, or even the type of relationship these two have, this has a purpose, I want to represent any kind of relationship, be it with a man/woman or any other gender identity, same with the type of relationship, it can be lovers, or a father and his son, two friends or even rivals, all of these details are vague UNTIL the spectator defines what they are, if you are watching this and think they are lovers, both of them men, then you will be correct, this is open to interpretation, and if you happen to identify something, I will be so happy that you did, if you did, consider telling me what you interpreted :) I will be so grateful.

In this story, Pei wants to revive his counterpart by finding their missing piece, however that is not enough, he must go further and give a piece of themselves to revive them, which is scary to Pei, it frightens them. In the climax, Pei gets hurt by a blast while trying to fit both pieces in the cavity, after this, Pei looks scared to try again, this portrays fears in relationships, fear of hurting and getting hurt, and in the process, isolating one self and not trying again.

However, Pei looks determined to give it their all for their counterpart, sacrificing a  part of themselves, in the end they create a symbiosis and become one, a stronger self together, a peaceful but strong being, because at the end, that’s the payoff from effort in relationships.
