When I was 17 I was rewatching the Star Wars prequels one day and I started to realize the power of the phrase “only Sith think in absolutes.”

So, whenever I catch myself thinking in absolutes about myself I say that phrase.

My brain tells me nobody actually loves me and never will? That’s an absolute. Only Sith think in absolutes. I don’t wanna be a Sith. Okay, I guess it’s not that extreme.

My brain tells me because my friend isn’t texting me back she secretly hates me and has this whole time? Woah. That’s a bit drastic. Don’t be a Sith. It’s probably more complex than that.

I got a D on a test and that somehow means I’m the worst and most useless human being ever? Woah there buddy. That’s not the Jedi way. Back up a bit maybe.

If you think that might work for you, try it. It also works when you’re mad at people. Friend beat you in Mario Kart? Don’t cut them off. Only Sith think in absolutes. That person has a problematic opinion or is slightly ignorant on a topic? Woah buddy. That doesn’t mean they’re the spawn of Satan. Don’t be a Sith about that.
