Starting over... again.

Here’s the thing I love about this Tumblr value drop because it’s another case of CEOs not understanding what the fuck happened and blaming it on whatever they want.

There were people who were really butthurt about porn being banned. I get that. But they were in the minority compared to the actual problems the porn ban brought.

Artists got sick of their work being automatically blocked from view. Users got sick of their blogs being blocked from view/becoming unsearchable due to content on their blogs. LGBT+ folk got sick, absolutely SICK of the fact that terms that described their issues were suddenly considered “not safe for work.” 

The obvious solution: don’t post racy stuff, right? Lemme be real with everyone who thinks this, though. 

I posted gifs of a kitten. The bot automatically flagged it NSFW and I had to waste someone’s time with appealing it. It still shows this at the top of the gifset. 

This also affected all of my past gifsets of World of Warcraft scenery, kitty pictures, etc. I had to go back through my archive and appeal all of them.

Yeah, sure, so people were butthurt about losing porn on Tumblr. There are a billion other places on the internet to look at porn, though, so it doesn’t really matter.

BUT. The porn wasn’t the problem. A lot of people didn’t give a shit about porn not being allowed. They DID give a shit about their content being flagged for no reason, having to appeal everything they posted due to the absolute garbage algorithm hiding their innocent posts, and their famously LGBT+ friendly site suddenly banning posts tagged with LGBT+ issues. 

Verizon didn’t lose money because they banned porn. Verizon lost money because they were completely insensitive to their users, used scatter-shot tactics to try to achieve their goal, and STILL haven’t gotten rid of the god damned spammers. Now to get peoples’ attention, the spammers just use stolen booty pics of pretty girls instead of porn gifs. That’s the ONLY thing this ban accomplished toward its stated goal. It affected bot behavior. Whoop dee doo. 

I promise I understand your ire, I comprehend censorship, I do not belittle your righteous indignation against the internet’s telling you what you can and cannot do.

I also think you’re pretty bent because you can’t see all your friends nudie patootie as easily anymore. Joan from accounting never comes to your cubicle on Thursday and says “Hey George it’s Thursday, want to see my vag?”. It’s a real crime.
