HOTD Comes Back Swinging With Hot Dong!
I don't like reviewing. I'm not someone who believes in his knowledge or perspective enough to judge something and discuss it with others. But I need anyone reading my future works of ASOIAF to understand why it won't have much association with HBO's tv show, House of The Dragon.
Proceed if you've the stomach sweet summer children:
No Nettles? Condom, Eat Pebbles
Swapping Nettles with Rhaena was never a good decision and can never be in any plain of existence for reasons that have been poked to death. But holy hell does making a character stupid as hell like this to just abandon a child under her care and just go out to the wild without any means of survival to chase a fucking wild dragon is an achievement rivaling GoT post season six writing. Yet! Her bonding with it in matter of...hours? Days? And taking that same wild dragon into battle while you're not even having a good footing on riding or commanding? I have no words but loss of wonder at why Rhaena looked high most of the time near Sheepstealer.
Targ/Stark Wank Remains Dank
This little trope feeding of majority was not lost, nor appreciated. Not a major problem overall, as I am not one to beg for battles every episode, just another symptom of HBO not being able to let go of self-mythologizing things that are put in the source material to be dissected. And also favoritism of writing around characters, Jacen Lannister treated no better than Rhea Royce or Laena or Laenor Velaryon. Not a critic of casual enjoyers of such, merely expressing disappointment how cheap and shorthand it became in pop culture.
Have aplenty of your skinned scheming lions, pretty supremacist inbreds, and whatever the fuck fart the Northerners are high off in this century lads. It's well-earned.
Lohar Lamefist gives Tyland the Bitchface
Get a load of these two. Makes you feel like these character's hot shit right?
Well they is, quite shit in fact.
It was kind of a waste, with the writing around her (him? them?). Yes the introduction tried to lean too much into Jack Sparrow inspiration, but there was some entertaining elements about. Too bad the actor couldn't do anything to save her life. Something that became gravely obvious whenever she was shouting commands. The bit with Tyland being so useless about when the guy wrestled aura out of mud in the last season was damming.
By this point I feel like I'm ranting. But this is coming from genuine sadness at the loss of really great things. Such as a character like Alicent if she wasn't gutted near the first season finale and now this creature eats up scenery to deliver some allegory of Mushroom for a shit bucket worth of internal problems. As funny as she is now with her obsession of Rhaenyra being the answer to everything, to the point of fucking over everyone.
And then...this masterpiece:
Would you believe me if I said I saw it coming? Most definitely not and you'd be right to. I didn’t expected this specifically, yet what it did. I expected Aemond to get the Criston Cole treatment of bulldozing a dramatic turn and development in order to establish audience relations with the character and set up the forward arcs. I am aware how important Aemond's gradual loss of control and sanity is important to his character and overall narrative, but why it works in the first place is the corroding nature and gradual timing of it. Something modern prestige TV can't afford anymore apparently.
Condal's genius does NOT stop here my dearest reader (whom I have no doubt suffering the length of my brainworm. Here's a 🫂 so to prepare you for another critical hit) for he had spoken of the tearing of the dress like this:
.....well. Isn't that some outstanding feminism right there. Condom should consider writing books shouldn't he?
All that aside. I mourn Rhaenyra the most. As much as I loath her adaptation in this show, I truly mourn the awful yet delightful woman we never got to see that she was.
I mourn them all and much more, for I love stories, especially those that truly challenge the soul and mind. Not only in passing or pretending to.
As biting and emotional this thing ended up as, I am not shitting upon this show. It is good for it tries to be, and what it tries to be is lesser than what it should’ve been (the source material is not much better. Don't get gaslitted) I guess the point was merely to create a shield for my own bubble.
Simply being humane and defending something I love. Hope you can relate. And thank you for your time.
