Garrancemau baby! Aphmau spends half the year with Garroth in the underworld and the other half with Laurance in the land of the living. Canonically Laurance is the only one who can enter and leave the Underworld as he pleases so during the 6 months Aphmau is with him, Garroth is left alone in Hadestown by himself. Garroth and Laurance’s relation was the first to strain because over the centuries Garroth felt increasingly more and more jealous that Laurance is able to spend basically ALL year with Aphmau but only chooses to see him when she’s back in the underworld. Garroth then begins to doubt that the two of them love him as much as they used to, had their love (Laurmau) surpassed what all three of them had together? At any moment those could leave him in Hadestown and never come back. As a result of this, Garroth’s love for Laurance had changed so much to the point the two of them barely recognise it anymore. During the time of Orpheus and Eurydice’s tale, Aphmau and Garroth’s relationship is starting to look a lot more like Garrance’s. Aphmau and Garroth are almost constantly arguing and Laurance has to watch the train wreck that is his own relationship and while narrating the remix: Dante and Nicole’s. 

Garroth: I know this may look a little bit unconventional considering that Laurance is the one you'd associate more with the underworld (nether), but in terms of personality it made more sense in my head to make Garroth Hades. Hades’ motivations for being the inciting incident (Taking Persephone home early and causing the seasons to change quicker) is doubt and by some extension jealousy. He’s scared that Persephone will never come back to him because her life in the living world is so much better than it is in Hadestown. He’s doubtful that she’ll stay just for his love. It feels SO familiar to Garroth’s betrayal in S1. My other reasoning is more doylist: Hades in mythology is the oldest amongst his brothers, and so is Garroth. I tried to make Garroth look like Garte for this AU because the idea of this Garroth being a dark reflection of his canon MCD version where he lets his doubts strain his love for the people he cares about makes my angst loving brain tingle. Final reason: Nicole and Garroth’s arranged marriage in canon made my brain go insane while watching “Little Songbird” 

Aphmau: This one literally needs no explanation. It’s Garrancemau. OF COURSE SHE’S PERSEPHONE. I made her dress look like an upside down flower because it was the only way I could keep the green of Persephone’s original costume and Aph’s purple. Also Aphmau drunkenly singing “Our Lady of the Underground”....that’s all

Laurance: Okay so in the show I watched, Hades, Hermes, and Persephone were lowkey giving messy polycule (ie. Hermes is their third who’s watching the other two drive their relationship into the ground. Hermes looked at the two of them with SUCH LOVE in that show goddamit). Hermes’ is the only character who’s not genderlocked in the play. Their costume has a fem/masc version and I had them kind of mashed together for Laurance because…well points at S1 outfit. My final reason why I gave him the role of Hermes instead of Garroth is purely because of Dante. For context, in the first song Hermes sings about how he knew Orpheus’ mother and ALL MY BRAIN SAID WAS “His brother was a friend of mine, and these boys they were muse’s sons” and so I locked in Laurance and Hermes. 

Nicole: To choose Nicole over Nana was kind of a no brainer. Her relationship with Dante is already tragic in MCD so it fits. ALSO Nicole fit the aesthetics of Hadestown more than Nana anyways
