Ben didn’t answer. His lip curled into a snarl, his face twisted by anguish. She closed her eyes, a single tear slipping down her cheekbone and into her hair. He let out a scream, raising his saber higher.

Rey waited.

She waited for the scent of her burning clothes, and the stench of her seared flesh. She waited for the feel of his saber ripping through her chest; for her heart to beat in defiance of its impending doom, as it ripped itself to shreds against his sword. She told herself she wasn’t going to make a sound when she died, but she knew it was a lie. She’d cry out in pain, and lock onto Ben’s eyes. She knew he’d close his. He would be able to bear watching her die.

She waited to bleed for him, to sacrifice herself for him. Waited for the sound of her body burning around his saber, and the scent of scorched blood. The sound of his crackling saber was loud in her ears. Almost as loud as the drumming of her heartbeat.
