I remember being thoroughly surprised the first time I saw this, because I hadn’t picked up on the Rian/Deet thing being more than just a caring, close friendship. I guess I wasn’t paying attention due to being constantly scared they were gonna do the Hero/Princess thing, and so every time Rian interacted with Brea in some way, or the scene were setting up some sort of jealousy thing, I braced myself. But it all turned out to be some kind of deliberate or unintentional trope tickling.

After seeing this I rewatched the series (...more than once) and started noticing subtle things and like,

odd1seven said: Well for the biggest part of human history it was acceptable to be socially excluded/shunned for dating someone from another group considered inferior/different… I like how they included this in the show because this kind of racism and divide has always been used to maintain status quo. It’s a “silly” scene but says a lot about their society.

I just wanted to say that what made this scene even more effective in my eyes, it’s the fact that it is indeed “silly”. I’m glad you brought that up. They are really strong words presented in such an innocent way. I can't really put my finger on why it works so well, but it was my first thought when watching it. Kind of a "that's just how it is, oh well" thing?
