so i might accidentally be the reason one of my new coworkers is quiting.
for this purpose, weāll call him ājakeā. anyways so jake and lyle obviously worked together before i got there and actually became pretty good friends, at least so far as coworkers go. as expected, with spending all day with together and getting on, theyāve share lots with eachother about their lives, including lots about their wives. and subsequently, lyle has come home and talked about jake plenty of times.
although jake and i had met in passing a number of times before, it was only once i started working with him that we actually spent time together. however, though lyle, we already felt like we knew eachother. because essentially we do. in fact, lyle had to kind of debrief me on what heās shared with jake. obviously nothing that would be a problem, but clearly this guy already knows a lot about me. anyways, my point is, we instantly clicked and started chatting like old friends. weāre both actually notorious for being able to talk someoneās ear off so plenty of jokes were made about which one of us would run out of breath first.
again, obviously, lyle knows us both, and was even the instigator of many of those jokes, so when i come home and ramble on about the shit jake and i chatted about all day, he just finds it amusing that i come to the same conclusions about his friend that he has.
on the flip side i think jake has gone home and chatted about spending the day talking to me (again heās notorious for not being able to stop talking so there is a zero chance heās not talked to his wife about me). weāll call her ājanā. now jan has even met lyle and knows im his wife, and i know she knows about me because i know about her. through lyle and jake sharing stories and then decompressing to their wives.
however jake has been in this job for 8+ years and never worked with a woman and (through the aforementioned grapevine) i know he and jan have⦠been on rocky ground⦠since the beginning of the year. so last week wednesday jan picked jake up from work, and though jan and i kinda sorta know each other but dont really, weāve never actually met. so that would have likely been the first time she put a face to the name, as it was for me. i didnāt get a chance to actually introduce myself to her, just a last minute wave when i realised who she was (which probably hasnāt helped).
anyways, jake wasnāt in work the next day and then on monday handed his notice in. completely out of the blue. heās got another job but his reasoning for leaving is ābecause he needs a changeā. heās also not actually worked with me since, despite him supposing to be my team leader and before last week wednesday i was shadowing him to learn everything.
lyle and i actually came to the same conclusion seperately. jakeās gone home and chatted about me in friendly way and jan, may have felt a bit jealous initially, but once she saw me, decided i was threatening level of attractive, theyāve had a fight and heās said heāll quit then so as not to work with me/ make her feel less insecure. heās gotten a job āwith a mateā that he says should pay more but sounds so⦠vague. heās giving up a well paid leadership role in a job heās been in for nearly a decade.
as i said, lyle and him are actually pretty good friends, so lyle asked him straight if this was the case. he denied it, but the way in which he did and some comments heās made has completely confirmed it for lyle. iām still not sure if iām just being self centered here but lyles convinced this is the real reason heās quitting.
itās frustrating because honestly i get it. if lyle suddenly came home chatting about a female coworker, after years of never mentioning women at work, and i saw her and thought she was attractive (especially if heād not mentioned that she was before), id be jealous too. in fact the only reason lyles not been jealous about me coming home and nattering on about another guy is because he knows jake so well. and i mean lyle and i are also very open and if i thought there was an issue id of told him.
even more frustrating, another guy quit, literally the day i started, and he blamed his frustrations with his hours, but had been very blunt with the lads that he thought me starting would āruin the dynamic of the teamā. the majority of the lads agree that it was best he quit anyways so i didnāt feel too bad, but jake is a core member of the team. one of the biggest personalities and actually the only team leader. so itās a major blow for the team. in fact one other guy has also said heās going to give in his resignation (he also has had one foot out the door for a while so just needed any excuse). but now i feel like ive caused 3 people to quit simply by just being a woman.
