The Covid- 19 pandemic has brought forth many issues that were previously unnoticed. Problems from education to work spaces have been affected equally across the board. Among these spaces are the trade careers of those in the beauty industry. Beauticians, barbers, nail technicians, aestheticians, and massage therapist have been trust into a new uncertain world for their work. One might even argue that these workers have been pushed a bit to the back burner in the wake of the disaster that doctors and nurses face. Yet, just because these workers have not been able to go back to work safely, the need for these services have not magically become obsolete. People will not only need but also want to get their hair cuts, their manicures, and massages. 

Despite the roadblocks for careers in the beauty industry, a job in the beauty industry can be rewarding for a lifetime as long as the proper safety measures are taken. There are multiple avenues you can take from hair care to skin care to muscle care. Trade schools are more affordable than a degree and introduction programs are a usually no more than a year of work, shorter than it takes to earn a degree. Additionally, a license in a beauty trade also offers work flexibility. You can start a business, become self employed, or gain a position in a company. More than that, a career in the beauty industry is a fun and great holistic outlet for creativity. Finally, a trade in beauty will give you a set of skills you will be able to have forever. You will never be out of work as long people will need a haircut, their nails done, a massage, or any other beauty service.

Around March 13, 2020, I was laid off from my job due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. I worked as receptionist for a truck rental company. I was anxious in the face of uncertainty but I knew somehow, my family and I would get by. Unfortunately, my optimism and options were not as vast as those around me. My family was not as bright. 

I have grown up in a house of trade workers. My mother is an aesthetician and  my sister is a massage therapist. My partner works as a barber and even my close friend works as a nail technician. They all love their careers and it has always been inspiring that they have been able work with their passions. When the state had shut down, barber shops, salons, and parlors have were the first to go. With no way to pay bills and misinformation rampant, I saw the people I love around me shiver in fear at the uncertainty of the future. Everyone of these people had experience the same shut down but their livelihoods were at stake. Simply put, they had lost not only the way to express their passions, but also their jobs.
