The thing about the great Gatsby. Is that if Nick ever explicitly told the reader that he is attracted to/has sex with men, it would disrupt what queerness means within the language of the novel. Queerness is only ever expressed within the gaps in the narrative, or the pointed lack of explanation for why certain details capture Nick’s attention. To be queer is to be unsaid. To be unsaid is to be queer. So this aspect of the book, disappointingly left subjective, can’t be made factual because doing so would contradict that Nick’s queerness is by definition something he cannot let slip into his narration. Nick is ‘queer’ in the most literal sense, because he can’t bear or risk telling us these things. His queerness has to be left out of the book for it to exist.
