The cafeteria smells like burnt coffee and soy sauce. Not exactly poetic, but it’s the closest thing 5wirl gets to breakfast before rehearsal.
Kazuha walks in beside Aether, who’s mid-rant about his chemistry professor. Something about missed assignments and divine punishment.
“Maybe next time the universe will actually grade you on effort,” Kazuha hums, voice mild.
“Maybe next time the universe will mind its business,” Aether shoots back, pushing through the lunch line.
At their usual table, Venti slides a tray across to Xiao—miso, tofu, and whatever passes for balance in their diet. Xiao doesn’t look up. One earbud in, expression deadpan, he stabs a piece of tofu like it owes him money.
Heizou drops into the empty seat beside Aether, tray clattering. “So let me get this straight—you’re failing chem, and your solution isn’t begging for extra credit?”
Aether groans. “It’s not even worth asking at this point.”
Kazuha hums again, distracted. Out of the corner of his eye, he catches Venti mixing applesauce and gummy worms like it’s fine dining.
The sight alone makes his stomach turn.
Heizou notices too. “You planning to survive that, or is this your last meal?”
Venti looks up, cheeks puffed out mid-bite. “What? Is there something on my face?”
“Yeah,” Xiao mutters, “regret.” He flicks his spoon at him. It hits Venti square between the eyes.
Aether sighs, leaning away from the chaos. “Venti, what in the archons’ name possessed you to eat that?”
“Energy,” Venti says brightly. “Perfect combo. Sugar and carbs. Keeps me awake all day.”
Heizou nearly chokes on his fruit. “Yeah, awake and on the toilet for twelve hours straight.”
Even Xiao smirks, faint but there.
Kazuha sets his chopsticks down, pinching the bridge of his nose. “I can feel my organs shutting down just watching you.”
Venti grins, entirely unbothered. “That’s just jealousy, my poetic friend. You wouldn’t understand the creative process.”
“Creative process?” Heizou laughs. “You’re about to create food poisoning.”
Kazuha lets out a quiet breath, eyes drifting toward the cafeteria doors as laughter hums around him. Trays clatter, someone yells for soy milk at the drink station. Ordinary noise. Familiar.
It’s easy, sitting here. The rhythm of their conversations, the teasing, the way Aether complains and Xiao doesn’t respond. For all the chaos, it’s the kind of moment that always ends up in a verse of Kazuha’s lyrics.
Maybe that’s why his gaze lingers when the door swings open and you walk in.
The noise around him fades—the echo of Venti’s laughter, Heizou’s teasing, the scrape of chopsticks—all of it slips out of focus.
Then you glance his way, catching him mid-stare. Your brows lift, like you’re surprised he was even looking.
Kazuha blinks, turning his eyes back to his tray, the corner of his mouth twitching.
“Hey,” Heizou’s voice cuts through the quiet. “You good?”
“Fine,” Kazuha says evenly, reaching for his miso. “Just thinking.”
Venti leans in, smirking. “Poetry, huh? Or someone poetic?”
Kazuha doesn’t look up. Just hums, noncommittal, and stirs his soup.
But the faintest shade of pink dusts the tips of his ears.
