I think leon's personal grief manifests itself as an overwhelming feeling of hollowness. it goes beyond a simple identity crisis β he's lost core parts of who he was. he's full of holes, and can neither remember what used to be there nor maintain any real hope of getting his original self back
he tries not to think too hard on it. he's been working hard on making a new identity, one that doesn't hinge on keeping a league title or putting his public image under the full control of another, but the pain still creeps up on him sometimes
He may have officially been dethroned by an enterprising youth in their first shot at the circuit, but a man is only dead when he's forgotten. Leon was the top for a reason. But time to focus on busines-

Again, Leon has to bite his tongue, the memories of the Second Darkest Day's aftermath nipping at his heels like dogs giving chase. With Interpol nowhere in sight, the region had had to pull together to clean itself up and move past the terror they'd experienced, and naturally Leon had done his part to help.
To say he's familiar with disaster relief would be an understatement.

Leon chooses not to correct her on the whole 'Champion' thing. He's long since stopped being surprised by just how many people choose to forget or ignore his televised title loss, and he doesn't especially want to revisit the memory just to argue semantics. β Well, Superhen's in luck, because we're actually headed that way now! It's Galarian tradition for the head of the League to leave out some fresh honey and berries for the Tangle's PokΓ©mon just before the Gym Challenge starts up, and while I'm not exactly the head, I'm close enough to it. β
Rose has never showed much interest in tradition, anyway. He's all about the future, about looking forward to secure Galar's legacy and make it the best it can be, and apparently progress means leaving behind the rituals of the past. Leon disagrees. It's common courtesy to give the PokΓ©mon a little treat before inviting hundreds, if not thousands of strangers to traipse through their home grounds day and night.
They seem to appreciate it, too. The past few years, he's barely been able to step foot into that forest without Spritzee perching on his shoulders and Phantump clinging to his arms.
