multimuse blogs can’t always be expected to choose our muse for starters. when we post a starter call and ask you to specify who you want, that doesn’t mean you can cop out by saying “ anyone is fine! ” because… it’s not. if we throw a character at you that you’re unfamiliar with – or, worse, a character you don’t like – nine times out of ten, your inspiration for that thread will dwindle right off the bat. we don’t ask to put you on the spot ; we ask because we want to write with you, and make sure you enjoy a thread as much as we do.
similarly, if we like one of your starter calls, we’re generally leaving it up to you to decide you feel would go best with your muse. when we get messages asking us who we want the starter for, it puts an enormous amount of pressure on us to find someone compatible, let alone someone you know, when you could do that far more easily. and please don’t worry about whether you’re choosing someone we’d want to write ; if we have a character listed on our blog, it’s safe to assume that we actively want to write them.

I think about this scene a lot tbh. How the scientists start with "We were just doing our job" and only offer any sort of apology for cooking him in an oven, watching him 24/7, mocking him, isolating him, denying any sort of real care, treating him like a thing and not a human child, when they realize Homelander is going to kill them. It's telling that there's horror from the scientists over watching Homelander kill adults - while they lacked any horror at what was done to a child. Frank treated cooking a literal CHILD in an oven like he's just doing accounting work. The oven has a clear viewing window; there is no way they didn't see John screaming and crying in agony as he was cooked alive. They didn't care. Homelander's ability to be empathetic could never develop when he got none growing up. And then there's how smug Barbara is when she talks about the psychological conditioning and emotional abuse. Yes, she's trying to get a dig in because she knows she'll die, but the pride she has in talking about what they did to John isn't fake. She is genuinely proud of what they did to him and how they destroyed a child's psyche.
"They were scared [of you, Homelander]", but is that really true? Is that really why no one intervened? Or is it because he was poised to be Vought's perfect leashed attack dog, and they missed the part where their abuse of Homelander turned him rabid, such that when he got off his leash, no one would be safe?
Vogelbaum himself has pointed out that Homelander used to be a really sweet kid, before the experiments started. I firmly believe that, without Vought - if Homelander had real parents and a real home and the upbringing he pretends to have had for the camera - Homelander would have been Superman.
How could he ever see himself as human if everyone around him either praises him like he's above them, or treats him like an unfeeling object, a corproate product on a shelf?
My portrayal is pre-series, specifically exploring if there is any way to undo Vought's damage or at least lessen it enough that who John used to be can still exist. Everyone Homelander hurts in The Boys (except Frank, Marty, and Barbara) are innocents, and he is irredeemable in the show's run and deserved to die at Butcher's hands. But no one starts that way. And it's telling that, even if his reasons were partially for the attention and love, Homelander wanted to do good in Diabolical.
I do write mine as not becoming pure evil after the eco-terrorist incident; he's horrified afterwards that he was wiling to kill Black Noir, that he'd blacked out and awoke to find he'd killed the 'bad guys' and the hostages. There's a basis for this in Homelander's reaction to his imagine spot about killing protestors. At this point in his life (being my blog's run), he doesn't want a repeat; he can be jaded, he can get angry, and on-camera and off-camera Homelander won't behave the same - but he's not going to cause a Flight 37 at this stage. But if Vought keeps covering his mistakes, if he doesn't meet people removed from Vought who can help him learn empathy and social skills and negotiation and who he is besides Homelander, if he doesn't get help from psychologists who are not in Vought's payroll - if he doesn't break the leash before he's past the point of no return ...
There's admittedly a lot of things about The Boys I'm not into and that I don't like. It wouldn't be the first time I took a muse from a show I'm not into and tried my own hand at them; see Kyle, Stella, etc. Homelander raises tragic and fascinating character concepts, and me writing him pre-series is so I can explore this concept in my own way, with input from and interactions with RP partners.
