Snippet from The King's Sacrifice, Chapter 7
When Narcissa finally pulled back, she looked over to the couch, and Sirius watched her eyes widen as she took in who was there. βOh, Severus, I wasn't expecting you.β She gave him a puzzled look before glancing at Remus, who gave her a small, tight-lipped smile and a nod.Β
βUnsurprising,β Severus said, still sitting, only tilting his chin upwards slightly in acknowledgement. βBut necessary nonetheless.β Narcissaβs eyebrows pinched together in confusion, and she looked back to Sirius, tilting her head in silent question.
βYou did say I could bring a plus one,β Sirius said weakly, trying to sound brave but falling short.Β
Narcissa blinked at him, her large blue eyes and her pale face and hair making her look a bit owlish. βNo,β she said simply, stepping back, looking between them as if she were certain it was a joke.Β
βYes,β Severus said plainly, folding his arms over his chest and leaning back in the chair.Β
Narcissa's mouth opened and then closed. And then she tried again, turning to Sirius, βI thought you wanted to bring Weasley!β She demanded in an accusatory tone. βYou were practically clinging to her for support last weekend!β
βWe thought it best if we both told you sooner rather than later,β Severus said simply. Sirius thought he was holding up admirably given Severus had made it sound like Narcissa and Lucius were his best friends, but then he noticed the way Remusβs hand was trailing the back of the settee and just barely touching Severus's arm. Ah.
βDoes Lucius know?β She demanded, her face surprisingly unchanged, but Sirius could see the hurt in her eyes and the heat in her tone.Β
βDo I know what, my love?βΒ
Sirius froze as Lucius stepped into the room, too close for his liking and Sirius stepped back up, putting him closer to the settee. He jumped a bit when Remus reached out and touched his hand, but otherwise appreciated the gesture.Β
Narcissa moved her heated glare from Severus to her husband and pointed at Severus, her mouth set into a firm line, looking almost like a petulant child tattling to an adult.Β
Lucius, for his part, kept his face carefully blank as he looked first at Severus, then Remus and then Sirius, and then to his wife, his eyebrows slowly raising. βDo I know what?β He repeated.Β
βYou knew!β Narcissa declared loudly, looking furious enough that Sirius wondered if she might hit her mate. βAnd you didn't tell me!?β
βI didn't know,β Lucius said slowly, his gaze flickering back to Severus for a second before returning to his wife. βI suspected. There is a difference.βΒ
