𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐧𝐞𝐝.

IF  SHE  SHUTS  HER   EYES,   she  can  forget  the  blood.   it   was  all   for  her  own  glory,  but  if  she  tells   the  lord  it  was   for  her  sons,   maybe  he   will   understand.    her   hands   are  ice  cold   from   dipping  them  into  the  freezing  river  just  now,   to   remove   the  stench  of   flesh.   royal  flesh.   the  king’s   blood  is  off  her  hands,   and   as   she  returns  to  her  horse,  for  just  a  second  she  pauses.   a   twig  snaps  behind  her,   and  she  whips   her   head.   ❝   who’s  there  —  SHOW  YOURSELF  !  ❞   digits   reach  into   her   back,   wrapping   around   a   silver   dagger.   the  same   which  slit  the  throat  of   a  king.  she   turns,  looking  for   a  rustle  in  the   scenery.      ❝  i  know  you’re  there.  ❞

THESE  VISIONS  ARE  MEANT  TO  DRIVE  HER  MAD.     who  would  have  thought  the  old  man  to  have  so  much  blood  in  him?    she  casts  away  from  the  mirror,   letting  the  glass  hairbrush  shatter   along   the   floor   before   she   hears  it  again.   is  it  another  vision?   that  has  come  to  haunt  her?   is   she  being  haunted ,  once  more?     ❝  have  you  come  to  warn  me?   to  anger  me?    ❞   she  knows  what  she  hath  done,  the   blood   that  covers   her   hands.   she  cannot   remove  it,   no  matter   how  hard  she  tries,  the  blood   cannot   leave   her   hands.    her   mind.  all  this  power,  all  she’s  ever  wanted  and  now  she is  nothing  but  useless.   rendered   like  a  fallen  goddess,  a  stag  to  be  hunted.    she   steps  from  the   shadows,  the  voices   growing  around  her.       ❝ are  you  a  vessel   to  warn   me  of  my  sin?    ❞

 ❝   A   WITCH ?  ❞    such   a   revelation   peaks   interest  in   her.   to  her,  people  are  nothing  more  than  what  they  can  bring  her.   each   being  somewhat  more  useless  than  the  next.   she  mindlessly   walks   along  the  gardens  of  the  manor,  knowing  that   cassandra   will   follow   her.  where  else  can  she  go?   this  is  macbeth’s   castle,   the  king  now   dead  letting  the  lady  (  turned  queen  )   rule   until  her  son  is  of   age.   the  head  on  the  platter  doesn’t  bother   her,   but  the  idea  of  losing  her  power   one  day  does.     so   she’s   taking   precautions.       ❝  this  could  be  useful  to  me.   ❞

THERE   ARE  POWERFUL  MEN  many   around  her.   many  that  are  fools.  too  good  of  nature,   too   trusting   and   those  that  are   too  confident.   the  lady  of  the  night  is  slow  to  pass   final  judgement,   but   quick   to   learn.    she   watches  him,   the   NORTHERN   BOY,   and   questions   his    authenticity.   her   impression  of  him  is  one  of  the   shadows,   but  he  can  be  useful.   long  fingernails   press  against   the   table   as   she   leans  forward.    ❝   i   welcome  you  to   cawdor  —  please  receive  my  dearest   apologies  for  such  a  mess  ,   my  servants  were  mistaken   about  your  arrival.   ❞   the   truth  is   mixed   with   lies,   her  own  frustration   at  the  lack  of   communication  between  her  and  any  other  royal.   it’s  all   a   ploy  to   destroy  her.      ❝  —    I’M  SURE   YOU  KNOW   that  most  of  the  others   around  here    are   not    very   fond   of   me.  ❞
