TW: SUICIDE ATTEMPT, OCD, DEPRESSION, ALCOHOL ABUSE, DRUG ABUSE
Damian Escobedo, a 32-year-old Chicago native, recently moved to the tranquil town of Blue Harbor to take up a position as an 11th grade Spanish 2 teacher at Blue Harbor High School. Jovial and content most of the time, Damian's cheerful exterior conceals a past marked by significant struggles with depression, OCD, and alcohol abuse. His journey to sobriety began six years ago, and he now diligently attends Alcoholics Anonymous meetings at least once a week, finding strength and solidarity in the support of others who share similar experiences.
Growing up in Chicago, Damian was raised by his father, a dedicated mechanic who ran a small, family-owned shop. Without a mother and with two younger sisters to look after, Damian took on a protective role early in life, often acting as a surrogate parent and caretaker. The skills he learned working alongside his father in the mechanic shop not only honed his aptitude for fixing cars but also provided a constructive outlet for his restless energy. Even now, Damian finds solace in repairing old cars, a hobby that allows him to connect with his past while finding peace in the present.
Despite his personal challenges, Damian was popular in high school, adept at masking his internal turmoil. He excelled socially and academically, but the pressures of maintaining this facade took a toll on his mental health. It was during his college years that his struggles came to a head, culminating in a suicide attempt that forced him to take a year off. During this period, Damian grappled with feelings of being fundamentally wrong and out of place. It was a dark time, but with the help of therapy and support from loved ones, he began to rebuild his life.
An underlying source of Damian's turmoil was his burgeoning awareness of his sexuality. From a young age, he suspected he liked boys, a realization that was fraught with fear due to his father's staunchly conservative views. His father often condemned others for similar feelings, creating an environment where Damian felt unable to express his true self. Moving away from his father's influence to Blue Harbor has been transformative, offering Damian the freedom to explore his identity in a more accepting and less judgmental environment.
In Blue Harbor, Damian is slowly becoming more comfortable with himself, though he still experiences occasional down periods. The town's slower pace and supportive community have been instrumental in his journey towards self-acceptance. As a teacher, Damian is passionate about fostering a positive and inclusive environment for his students, drawing on his own experiences to empathize with those who may be struggling silently.
Balancing his teaching career with his love for mechanics, Damian often spends his weekends fixing up old cars, a therapeutic hobby that keeps him grounded. His relationship with his younger sisters remains strong, and he is fiercely protective of them, often visiting them in Chicago or inviting them to Blue Harbor for weekends.
His sisters like to say Damianâs life is a testament to resilience and the power of second chances. They remind him often that his path has not been easy, but his commitment to self-improvement and his dedication to helping others reflect a profound inner strength. Though heâs not quite sure he agrees, itâs this that keeps him going when he feels his flaws wrapping around him threateningly once again, as if they mean to pull him down into oblivion â this time for good.
