9.Ā āwhy are you awake so late?ā
it was so much fun to write this, i hope you enjoy it, i think that is the longest text i wrote in english so i hope it it understandable ā„
The mild summer wind gently blew through your hair as you watched the sunset on the jetty and listened to the waves gently hitting the sand. Again and again you caught yourself longing for this inner peace that only rose inside you when you came to the beach.Ā
You didnāt know exactly how long you were there, but the sun had long set when you heard a gentle ripple below the jetty but didnāt pay much attention to it. Often you were frightened by a duck splashing peacefully in the water, this time nothing would upset you.
Curiously, Yamaguchi looked through the narrow distances of the planks, trying to see who was lying there. He gently held on to the rough wood, carefully pulled himself a little further out of the water and blinked through the small crevice only to see the sky that was brightly lit by the moon. The merman loved to swim to the surface at night, even if his friends would call him crazy if they knew. He was sure nothing would ever happen to him, at least he was careful. But when he found this person again and again at this jetty, he asked himself so many questions, questions he couldnāt answer himself. The urge to talk to the person grew from day to day, it was like an itch, which he could not ignore.Ā
But how would he start talking to a human? Yamaguchi knew that people did not believe that there were creatures like him. It had been his biggest advantage until now when he was on the surface, but now it was a disadvantage. A disadvantage that pulled his heart down like an anchor. What would he do if you ran away? He could never come back to that jetty, never see you again.Ā
The nights became warmer and warmer, even the water reminded Yamaguchi of a warm spring rather than the ocean as he broke through the surface and wiped his wet hair from his face. He had already seen you from afar, your feet, which he had eyed curiously before, dangled relaxed in the water, while you kept looking at the display of your phone to switch between your favourite songs.
As so often, Yamaguchi approached the wooden bridge, stretching his fingers through a wider gap and pulling himself up. He didnāt realize he was pulling on one of your strands of hair that had fallen through an opening in the gaps and you were startled by it. Hectically, you turned to your side and stared at Yamaguchiās dark eyes that stared at you. āShit!ā the merman cursed as he hit his head on the planks before dropping back into the water.
Under the surface he could only hear the dull, fast steps on the wood and your voice. At a safe distance he reappeared while rubbing his head.āIs everything all right?ā you asked as you tried to calm down. Your heart would almost jump out of your chest, you were sure of that when you saw Yamaguchiās webbed hands. Even when it was so dark there you could see the scales sparkle on his shoulders in the moonlight.
Yamaguchi opened his mouth, but he didnāt answer. Did he understand you at all? Your thoughts were overturning. Was that a dream? Everything your logic yelled at you was overridden at the moment the sea man swam to you and you could see his tail for a millisecond.
āYou are not afraid,ā he said after a feeling of eternity while not turning his gaze away from you. You could have sworn his cheeks would have been red when he drifted in the water and looked up to you, but who knew if your mind was playing a trick on you? After all, you thought you were talking to a sea man.Hesitantly you shake your head as you settle down again on the planks. āWhy are you awake so late?ā Yamaguchi asked. You could feel all the compassion that lied in his voice and then, well, you poured your heart out to that merman.
You talked about your work, your boss who gives you absolutely no break and that you only feel like a machine that is worthless if it doesnāt work. How burnt out you feel, although you are still so young and how you yearn for something that is fun in life, because at the moment you only see everything in different shades of grey.
Yamaguchi listens to you, he doesnāt understand everything you tell him, but he understands that you feel so infinitely unhappy and it almost breaks his heart to see you that way. When he offers you to be your friend, to collect beautiful shells and tell stories, you couldnāt have been happier. He told you a lot about his life in the sea, his favourite places and how he was rescued from dicey situations by his best friend. Yamaguchi became what you could look forward to all day long. He became what you were missing, he stole your heart and gave you his.
