You placed your phone back down on the table in front of you and settled down, exhaling audibly. Gus had explained to you that Walter had called him about switching Gale out with someone else, specifically his old partner. You didnāt know anything about Walterās previous partner, except for the fact that Gus had described him as careless and a junkie, expressing that he would be a liability to the business. Your boss had also told you that this change would, in fact, be happening, and you would be meeting āJesse Pinkmanā tomorrow in the lab.
A wave of relief washed over you, glad to not be in trouble in any way, but you also felt a pang of anger at Walter. You hated the way he treated you and Gale earlier today, and now heās asking to change partners over one mistake.
ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«
The following day you were back in the lab with Gale and Walter. Fortunately enough, you didnāt have to be the one to tell Gale that he was getting replaced. Unfortunately, you had to be there to see it happen.
āI donāt understand? I thought things were going pretty well,ā Gale questioned Walter, āYou know? We were becoming a real team.ā
āNot- Not so much, no.ā
āIs this about the temperature setting? I can assure you that will never happen-ā
āNo, itās bigger than that, Gale,ā Walter sighed, āItās much more than that.ā
You felt agitated, āCould you elaborate?ā you asked him, raising your eyebrows.
āWell, yes, of course I could-ā he started.
Gale instantly interrupted him, āI set up the entire lab,ā you could hear Galeās anger in his voice but also his sadness, āYou said you liked the configuration.ā
Walter stepped closer to Gale, āAnd I do. Look, youāre a fine chemist, really, with a promising future. Itās just that I- That we have different rhythms, Gale. You see- Itās⦠Itās as if Iām classicalā¦ā he paused for a second to think, āBut you are more jazz.ā
āJazz,ā Gale reiterates.
āJazz, yes. And God knows there is nothing wrong with jazz,ā Walter tells him, āItās simply that I requireā¦ā
You butt into the conversation again, āWalter wants to work with his old partner,ā you tell Gale bluntly.
Walters mouth falls open slightly, āI- Well, he just fits my tempo better- And Gale it honestly was great-ā
Before he could continue his explanation, the door opens suddenly, shifting the emotions swirling in the room. Those emotions soon turned into confusion.
The person that came walking through that door was nothing but the opposite of classical as Walter had mentioned. Gus had told you that you would be meeting Jesse Pinkman today, you really didnāt expect something like this. He wore multiple layers of baggy clothes, his hair was unkempt and messy, and his face was busted up. He was quite literally the polar opposite of Walter.
āOh, shit,ā Jesse gawked at the lab below him, āMan, this is the bomb!ā
He quickly made his way downstairs and walked up to Walter and slapped him on the chest.
āWhatās up, partner?ā he greeted him as he began to carelessly stroll around the lab, fixating his attention on the large, sparkling equipment around the room.
Galeās eyes followed the younger man as he walked away, āIs this my replacement?ā he asked solemnly. As Jesse came around to the coffee bench, Gale quickly introduced himself to the man, āHi, Gale. Nice to meet you,ā he gave him a slight wave.
āWhatās up?ā he briefly responded, making eye contact with him for a second before quickly looking at you. He walked up to Walter again and stood between him and Gale, āMan, we shouldāve ditched that RV months ago. Itās all, like, shiny up in here.ā
Jesse continued to walk around and occasionally make gasps and comments about the lab.
āIām sorry, I must be missing something. I donāt mean- I donāt mean to be- This makes no sense,ā Gale stuttered, āDid you know about this?ā he turned to ask you.
You gulped and pressed your lips into a firm line before reluctantly answering, āI only found out last night.ā
Galeās gaze dropped to the floor, āSo I guess this isā¦ā
He didnāt continue his sentence. Bringing his hand out to shake Walterās, he walks out of the lab with his head hung low. After Gale leaves the room, Walter urgently turns to you before you start making disapproving comments or expressions.
āThis is for the best.ā
You roll your eyes, āTwo hundred pounds a week, yes?ā you tell him.
āYes.ā
Jesse strolls back up to Walter, āMr. White, wow.ā
Walter steps back from you and turns to Jesse before turning back to you. He opens his mouth but then shuts it, unsure of what to say next. Eventually he collects his thoughts and gestures to Jesse and then back at you.
āUh, Jesse, this is Y/N, theyāre our supervisor, for now.ā
You force a smile as Jesse looks at you properly this time.
āYo, why do we need a supervisor now?ā he grumbles.
Your hands tighten around the clipboard slightly, āGus told me I have to. Iāll be out of your way.ā
Jesse rolls his eyes whilst he rolls his tongue in his mouth, āAll right, fine.ā
āOkay, thereās a lot to show you, some new techniques to learn,ā Walter motions Jesse over to the other side of the room, right past you.
Jesseās eyebrows raise a little, āWhat, now?ā
āYes, now,ā Walter says as he walks to the lockers, āWeāve only got a couple days before our next batch is due. And I need to get you up to speed.ā
Jesse stands still for a second before responding, āRight on, Iām just sayingā¦ā he asks, scratching the side of his head, āHowās the cell service down here?ā
āItās nonexistent,ā you tell him, āThereās a hard line for emergencies,ā you say while pointing to where the phone is on the wall.
Jesseās eyes follow your finger before looking back at Walter, āSo, you havenāt talked to anybody today? Other than, you know, Captain Nerd there,ā dragging his eyes up to the door Gale had walked out of minutes ago, āand Big Brother.ā
His comment makes you breath out through your nose audibly.
āWhy?ā Walter turns to look at Jesse.
āYour brother-in-law.ā
āWhat about him?ā
Jesseās demeanour shifts, āHeās um, like, I saw him get taken to a hospital in an ambulance.ā
āWhat?ā Walterās voice becomes stern.
His eyebrows tighten and he immediately stops unbuttoning his shirt. The sound of the locker shutting reverberates throughout the lab as Walter begins to walk towards the spiral stairs.
You follow his pace and attempt to stand in his way, āWait- Walter- You canāt just leave-ā
His face grows more heated, āNo I have to go-ā you reluctantly step to the side to let him past.
He speed-walked to the door as he buttoned his shirt up again.
āWhat about the cook?ā You yelled out.
Walter opens the door, just as heās about to shut the door behind him, he yells back at you, āWe can catch up later.ā
You scoff out loud.
āAre you kidding me?ā you turn to Jesse, who was still standing in the same spot.
He barely shrugs, as if he doesnāt really care.
Your eyebrows raise at his reaction, or lack thereof, āYou donāt care?ā
āI mean, not really? Heāll be back.ā
āYou know how to work these?ā you ask Jesse, gesturing to the machines.
He looks at them once more, āI- No?ā
You nod your head while you whisper a quiet āOf courseā under your breath. Jesse trills his lips as he shoves his hands into the pockets of his oversized jacket with a ridiculous money pattern all around it. As he walks around aimlessly, not saying anything, or even making eye contact with you, you hands come up to rub your forehead. You lazily sit down on one of the nearby chairs and place your clipboard onto a table.
Jesse flops down onto a nearby swivel chair, āSo uh, we just chillinā till he comes back?ā
āI guess thatās the plan since we both donāt know how to use any of this.ā
He glances at you, āIsnāt that like, your job?ā
āNo, that is not my job.ā you glare at him, furrowing your eyebrows.
For the next twenty minutes, nothing happens. Occasionally, Jesse gets up from his seat to walk around the lab, humming and making sounds with his mouth to fill the silence. You remain in your seat flipping through the pages on your clipboard of notes from the previous days, your other hand trailing your fingers up and down the edges of the hardboard material.
Mind numbing thoughts danced around in your head as the boredom slowly became unbearable. You fought the urge to start ripping all the hairs off your head to feel anything at this point. It was always boring with Gale and Walter but at least you were doing something.
Eventually you looked at the emergency phone by the wall. Your fingers reached for the corner of the pages on your clipboard, you flipped through to the day Walter had given you his number for a ājust in caseā scenario. You flipped the pages that were in front of the one with his number, over the top of the board and held them behind with your fingers. The chair slid back as you stood up and walked past Jesse who was doing another roundabout tour of the lab.
āWhatāre you doing?ā he asked you from behind.
āCalling him.ā
You pick up the phone, the chill of the plastic spreading across your palm. You hold up the paper with his number and using the other hand thatās holding the phone, you press each number in. After dialling his number, you hold the phone up to your ear and wait.
Nothing happens.
āFuck.ā you huff out, placing the phone back.
Jesse comes up next to you and grabs the phone, āLet me try something.ā
While holding the phone in his left hand, his right starts pressing a different set of numbers. As the phone dials, he holds the phone up to his ear. You look at him blankly. You both wait for someone to pick up the call, and as you wait, you notice his baggy sleeve falling down his arm, revealing a decent sized tattoo along his hand and arm. A simple observation.
A second passes and Jesse finally speaks, āHi, I would like to speak to someone⦠Not a patient⦠Like someone thatās visiting.ā
Jesse was calling the Hospital that Walter was at.
āYeah uh, Walter White,ā Jesse spins around to lean against the landline, his other hand up to his mouth as he nervously bites his nails.
You look at him with raised eyebrows. He notices your look at covers the phone.
āHeās still at the hospital,ā he says, ātheyāre getting him I think.ā
Another minute passes and Jesse finally makes contact with Walter.
āYo, we working sometime this year?ā
You can only hear Jesseās side of the conversation so you decide to place the clipboard on the table beside you and sit back down. You fold your arms on the table and lay your head on them while you listen to Jesseās voice.
āWe tried your cell and obviously you didnāt pick up. How else do we get a hold of you?ā
āLook, man. Itās been a whole day. How long is this grieving process? Just put a clock on it for me. All Iām saying is we have a schedule, right?ā
āDude, itās not my schedule. We have responsibilities here.ā
You can feel his eyes on you when he says that.
āYou know what? Whatever. Iāll just cook on my own.ā
āWhy not?ā
āThereās gotta be some sort of manual, right? And I can read. Or- or Iāll just ask Y/N to help me.ā
āYo, stop treating me like Iām your assistant. Iām not your bitch to order around. Weāre partners, remember?ā
āWhat, is your wife there?ā
āHey, tell your douche bag brother-in-law to head towards the light.ā
Jesse roughly shoves the phone back. A loud sigh leaves his mouth, his eyes on the phone before he turns around to your direction, briefly making eye contact with you.
āOkay, so whatās happening now?ā you ask him, your head is still laying on your folded arms.
He shoves his hands back into his jacket pockets, āDude, I donāt know, canāt we just⦠figure it out?ā
āI told you I donāt know how to use the machines,ā you slowly lift your head up to rest it on the palm of your hand, āthatās not part of my job,ā you accentuate the ābā.
Jesse immediately flings his hands out of the pockets and starts gesturing to you and your clipboard, āYou take notes, right?ā he pauses and you nod slightly, āWe could like, piece it together and shit.ā
You turn your head away to hide your smile, āOh yeah,ā you chuckle at him, āhave fun with that.ā
āYo, Iām just trying to improvise, you know?ā
You think for a second before reaching your hand out to grab the clipboard again, āAlright, fine.ā
ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«
You both did have fun with it. Too much fun.
Everything that was happening within the lab had no semblance of a professional work environment, instead it looked more like break time at a primary school. It started out very subtly, small jokes and laughs, soon escalated into literally messing around in the lab. Looking through drawers and containers even you hadnāt seen, playing around with the machines (safely), and even gossiping about how much Walter had pissed the both of you off.
You hadnāt worked (āworkedā) with anyone who was around your age, you were always surrounded by older people who were always so serious and it felt like no one ever cracked a smile, aside from Gale, but you still felt like you were on a different wavelength than him. Maybe Walter had a point.
Jesse opened one of the lockers and grabbed the hazmat suit and started unzipping it, āWait let me look more professional,ā he stumbles over his feet as he huffs out small giggles.
"I actually hate these so much,ā you say while laughing, āI donāt think youāll ever catch me wearing that.ā
āWhat so youād rather get all the chemically poisonous fumes all in your clothes.ā
āYou know what, yeah I would.ā
He zips up the suit all the way up to his neck, fitting the tight hood over his heads so that the only part of him you could see was his bruised and beat up face. Jesse steps away to drag a swivel chair to one side of the lab.
āYo, push me.ā
You donāt even answer him but you get up to jog over to where he is. His suit crinkles against the material of the chair as he tries to fit his whole body on the seat. For the next few minutes you push the chair with as much force as you could, sending him flying to the other side of the lab, occasionally letting him crash into the wall and other boxes. The sound of the both of you laughing like children brought you so much joy that you had been devoid of for a long time.
The both of you got your hands on some sort of device that blew out copious amounts of air, blowing your hair straight out of your face as you turned it on. You pushed the head of the tube towards Jesseās direction, blowing the air into his own face and hair.
He unzipped his suit slightly, āGive it here.ā
You pushed it towards him again, angling the stream of air away from his face this time. Jesse grabbed it and stuffed the opening into the opening of his hazmat suit, slowly filling it up with air. You snickered as he danced around on the spot.
The sound of the door clicking open made you flinch and your heart drop for a second, Jesse didnāt seem to care, thinking it was Walter.
āFinally, about damn time.ā
You had your eyes on the door and the pair of eyes that came into contact with yours did not belong to the man you were waiting for.
āWhy isnāt there anything cooking?ā Another man, Victor, asked the both of you.
Jesse had realised that it wasnāt Walter and started to quickly pat all the air out of his suit, ripping the tube out and switching it off.
You felt your ears burn and your mouth going dry, āUm, Sorry, Walter isnāt here, like he was and then he left and we donāt know how to use the machines or anything,ā you rambled on.
āWhy did he leave?ā
Jesse quickly answers him before you can, āYo, that was like, totally my fault, I told him something and that caused him to like, run out, okay?ā
Victor stared at you both for a few seconds, his face emotionless, before turning and leaving the lab without saying a single word after that.
ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«
You and Jesse were sat silently, exactly like how the beginning of this started. You could notice in the corner of your eye, Jesse, once again, bored out of his mind, tapping his fingers against the table, dragging his palms over his face, raking his fingers through his hair, bouncing his leg. In the midst of the stillness, the landline rang. Your eyes shot up to the phone. You steadily got up and walked over to the phone and picked it up, holding it to your ear and mouth.
āY/N?ā
You heard the voice of Gus on the other side. You silently cursed to yourself as the anxiety started to build up within your body.
Taking a breath in, you answered, āYes?ā
āWhat is going on?ā
āOh, yeah, so⦠Walter was here and then Jesse told him about his brother-in-law, who is in the hospital-ā
āI know Walter left, Victor called me,ā he interrupted you, āWhy are you messing around in the lab?ā
āI-ā
āI need you to act professionally, I canāt have someone with that behaviour working for me.ā
āYes, Iām sorry. It wonāt happen again.ā
He hung up. You placed the phone back.
When you turned around to walk back to your seat, you saw Jesse looking at you for a brief moment before he quickly turned away, pretending that he wasnāt watching you take the call. Falling back into your seat, you folded your arms on the table and rested your head on them, your face turned to the side.
āUh, you good?ā Jesse asked cautiously.
āYeah,ā you said, trying to sound as un-phased as you could.
The sound of his chair shifting was followed by footsteps walking away from you.
āMaybe, I could try calling him again.ā
You didnāt answer him.
The sound of Jesse arguing with Walter on the phone bounced around in your head as you scribbled and doodled nonsense on the paper of your clipboard. Your pen slipping out of your fingers more than once from the sweat accumulating on your fingertips and palm. Your brain replayed the moment of Victor catching you both not doing the work you were supposed to be doing, and then your boss calling you about it. The disappointment and sternness of his voice echoed in your ears. The unfriendly eyes of Victor burned into your head.
The sound of Jesse scoffing brought you out of your our thoughts. You saw him slam the phone back onto the landline before he turned to you.
āI donāt know what the hell heās doing!ā he dragged his hands down his face, muffling his words.
You rolled your eyes, āOkay, well, I donāt know either.ā
A bout of silence followed.
āYo, you good? Like seriously, youāve been all flat since you got that call,ā Jesse looked at you sincerely.
You dropped your pen fully, āYeah, uh, I just got a call from my boss asking about what was going on, Itās fine,ā you brought your hand up to your hair and played with it, twisting it around your finger and raking it back, āLook, maybe we should just leave, I donāt think anything is going to get done, if Walter comes back itās going to be too late.ā
āYeah⦠okayā¦ā Jesse rubs the back of his neck.
You and Jesse were outside, standing by your parked cars, the chattering and clattering of the workers of the laundry facility filled your ears. Your fingers brushed your car door and just as you opened it, Jesse stepped into view.
āHey, Iām sorry for getting you in trouble and shit, that was my fault, and I should have just kept my mouth shut when Mr. White was there,ā his mouth forced a smile, expressing some sort of guilt.
You looked at him, āItās okay,ā you smiled warmly, āI had a fun time anyway.ā
ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«ā«
The sound of your car tires against the rough pavement came to a halt as you parked in your driveway. Just as you turned the keys, your phone buzzed. You reach into your pocket and flip the phone open with your fingers, the vibrations of the call travelled through your fingertips as you stared at the screen. Answering the phone, you brought it up to your ear.
āI want 400 pounds by next week.ā
