Reminder: trans Muslims and gay Muslims exist and weâre not going anywhere.
The amount of support that this post has gotten is, quite honestly, incredible. LGBT Muslims are constantly forgotten and ignored because people from both the LGBT community and the Muslim community view our existence as a contradiction or an impossibility. Itâs time that people acknowledge us and our experiences with islamophobia and homophobia/transphobia because like I said: weâre not going anywhere.Â
My kidsâ school has a mostly Muslim population. Last year they celebrated purple Friday, and the number of kids calling in sick was huge. I spoke to a Muslim mom after, and she was commenting about how the kids were too young, and when I asked how old my kids should be before meeting their gay granddad, had no answer beyond insisting there are no gay Muslims. I told her there absolute 100% are. I worry about what will happen to these kids if and when they realize theyâre gay.
I miss the old eCauldron religion of FlameKeeping.
I also miss the FlameKeeping necklace I had and wore through most of my first attempt at college (lost it in a move).
I think all the time about how it rightfully identified the religious gaps in a lot of pagan paths and offered a really elegant supplement. I come back to it's ideas over and over even as I've invested in other religious paths.
fun fact: HeartShadowâs just starting up a Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/SacredHumanism Kid is off to college, so she has time to think again. đ
So I doodled one of these then instantly became obsessed with the idea and canât stop and have been spamming twitter with brain wolf facts sorry everyone.

When you learned of the god of war, you thought heâd be tall and muscular and angry. When you were about to meet him, you braced yourself for the worst.
You werenât quite expecting the short, scrawny, shy kid you ended up getting instead.
Olive skin, black hair, skinny, dirty face with pale lines where tears had sliced through the ash and dust. AÂ white chiton dress and a threadbare shawl draped over her shoulders.
A pair of wings - huge, black vulture wings, far too large on her tiny body - were the only things that suggested she was divine.
The general shifted his weight from foot to foot. Obviously respect had to be given to gods, but⌠âEr - Iâm sorry, I was invoking Ares? The god of war?â
The child god shrunk in on herself, and pulled the shawl over her shoulders. She muttered something. âSorry?â the general asked.
âAres is the god of slaughter,â the child god said in a slightly louder voice. âNot war.â
The general looked at the priest. The priest shrugged, clearly lost at sea. âWell,â the general said, âthen maybe Athena? Goddess of tactics in war?â
âTactics,â the child god repeated. âNot war.â
There was a long, ugly silence, as the huge vulture wings shifted with the whisper of brushing feathers. âMy name is - was - Iphigenia. Daughter of Agamemnon, king of Mycenae, commander of the Greeks who stormed the walls of Troy. When my father disgraced Artemis, and the winds of Greece would not blow her battleships to Troy, I was brought to Aulis. For my wedding, I was told. I was-â
She sobbed. Teardrops dribbled off her chin and fell to the temple floor. âI was fourteen. And then I was brought to the highest altar in Aulis, and - and then - and-â
Another sob. âI was fourteen,â she said.
The vulture wings draped over her, and she disappeared under the cloak of black feathers. When they parted, and when the child god looked up at the general, he fell backwards. Those eyes. Eyes heâd seen a thousand times in battle -
âI am the true spirit of war, general,â the child god said. âI am the goddess of bloodshed, of sacrifice, of the slaughter of innocents. I am invoked when men ravage, burn and pillage. I am invoked when mothers cry out, when sons die, when daughters are stolen. I hear it all, general. I have heard it all since the fall of Troy.â
The terrible wings opened up. The child god loomed over the fallen man, twenty, thirty feet tall. Somewhere, the priest was screaming. âHow dare you call upon my name.â
Fantasy books written by women are often assumed to be young adult, even when those books are written for adults, marketed to adults, and published by adult SFF imprints. And this happens even more frequently to women of color.
This topicâs an ongoing conversation on book Twitter, and I thought it might be worth sharing with Tumblr. And by âongoing,â I mean that people have been talking about this for years. Last year, there was a big blow up when the author R.F. Kuang said publicly that her book The Poppy War isnât young adult and that she wished people would stop calling it such. If youâve read The Poppy War, then youâll know itâs grimdark fantasy along lines of Game of Thrones⌠and yet people constantly refer to The Poppy War as young adult â which is one of its popular shelves on Goodreads. To be fair, more people have shelved it as âadult,â but why is anyone shelving it as âyoung adultâ in the first place? Game of Thrones is not at all treated this wayâŚ
Rebecca Roanhorseâs book Trail of Lightning, an urban fantasy with a DinĂŠtah (Navajo) protagonist has âyoung adultâ as its fifth most popular Goodreads shelf. The novel is adult and published by Saga, an adult SFF imprint.Â
S.A. Chakrabortyâs adult fantasy novel City of Brass has âyoung adultâ as its fourth most popular Goodreads shelf.Â
Tasha Suriâs Empire of Sand, an adult fantasy in a world based on Mughal India, has about equal numbers of people shelving it as âadultâ or âyoung adult.âÂ
Book Riot wrote an article on this, although they didnât address how the problem intersects with race. I also did a Twitter thread a while back where I cited these examples and some more as well.Â
The topic of diversity in adult SFF is important to me, partly because we need to stop mislabeling the women of color who write it, and also because thereâs a lot there that isnât acknowledged! Besides, sometimes itâs good to see that your stories donât just end the moment you leave high school and that adults can still have vibrant and interesting futures worth reading about. I feel like this is especially important with queer rep, for a number of reasons.Â
Other books and authors in the tweets I screenshot include:
Witchmark by C.L. Polk
A Ruin of Shadows by L.D. Lewis
The Starless Sea by Erin Morgenstern
The Day Before by Liana Brooks
A Phoenix First Must Burn edited by Patrice Caldwell
Shri, a book blogger at Sun and Chai
Vanessa, a writer and blogger at The Wolf and Books
TLDR: Women who write adult fantasy, especially women of color, are presumed to be writing young adult, which is problematic in that it internalizes diversity, dismisses the need and presence of diversity in adult fantasy, and plays into sexist assumptions of women writers.Â
Never forget the amount of hate R.F. Kuang got for explicitly stating that The Poppy War, one of the most triggering books Iâve ever read, should never be shelved as YA. She did so out of extreme concern of the content getting into the wrong hands without warning.
And then two days later Jay Kristoff said the same thing about NevernightâŚand nothing happened.
Custard Protocol gets put in the YA section all the time. I always say, well if you want girls in Texas to get that level of sex edâŚ

Meteor and Milky Way over the Alps : Now this was a view with a thrill. From Mount Tschirgant in the Alps, you can see not only nearby towns and distant Tyrolean peaks, but also, weather permitting, stars, nebulas, and the band of the Milky Way Galaxy. What made the arduous climb worthwhile this night, though, was another peak â the peak of the 2018 Perseids Meteor Shower. As hoped, dispersing clouds allowed a picturesque sky-gazing session that included many faint meteors, all while a carefully positioned camera took a series of exposures. Suddenly, a thrilling meteor â bright and colorful â slashed down right next the nearly vertical band of the Milky Way. As luck would have it, the camera caught it too. Therefore, a new image in the series was quickly taken with one of the sky-gazers posing on the nearby peak. Later, all of the images were digitally combined. via NASA
