The first sacrifice.

So the thing about that is, I gave up and crushed it with a wrench and the shards flew all over the place.

It's not meant to be a 1:1 thing where, like, they're Mary and I'm Jesus. That would be nuts. I chose religious imagery because I met them in PFLAG meetings that were held in the basement of this really striking church.

The piece is called "Seeing Spots" and it's about the way the sun would hit the floors of the church filtered through the stained glass. It's about getting your lights knocked out in a bad fight and knowing there's no comfort waiting for you in your own home. It's about the spots on a fresh baby deer, yearning to be a buck. It's about a lot of things, but mostly it's a piece about gratitude and reverence and love.

Aang: Ambassador Aang.

Zuko: Ambassador of what? You’re the only member of your nation.

Aang: And whose great-grandpa’s fault is that?

Zuko: Touche, ambassador.

Aang: I changed my mind now I’m King Aang.

Zuko: What.

Aang: King of the Air Nomad.

Zuko: I am not calling him that.

Aang: You’re disrespecting his dynasty, Zuko.

Zuko: Since when does he have a dynasty?

Aang: Well, most of it is gone, now.

Zuko:

Aang: Because of your great grandfather.

*turns on sound*

I turn to Ares.

Buuuut since we’re past that already, here are a couple of additional thoughts:

1 this IS the more humane alternative, which was invented to lower injury and death rates associated with previous techniques. When a better alternative is revealed it will probably replace this one. But this one is a pretty huge improvement over the other methods, one of which killed off something like 80% of the fish involved. A study of the above fish tube was conducted by Pacific Northwest National Laboratories in 2017 on the Columbia River and showed a much higher success rate. In that study, only one fish died (“due to a human error during the system setup”) and only 3 percent had signs of injury. So. The next best improvement might have to be “remove dam”

2 they are on their way to die. That is where we are helping them get to. That’s the end goal of the salmon’s migration. They on their way to mutate, start rotting alive, have an orgy, and die. That’s where the tube is taking them.
