July 18, 2009 – Spectacular Saturn, observed by the Cassini space probe from a distance of approximately 2.1 million kilometers (1.3 million miles).

Cassini is gone but its memory lives on.
this blog isn’t dead and neither am i.
but in a few dozen orbits i will be too.
we all get a few dozen orbits and burn up, just like cassini.
but in our brief and fleeting moments of life, we tread quietly, observing the magnificence all around us.
we spin around and around, savoring the beautiful sunset, knowing there won’t always be another.
but even in our absence, the march of life carries forth, spinning, observing.
for we are not alone in this dizzying swirl, we have each other, and that makes it all just a little bit sweeter.
look around you
you are cassini.
This is the last photograph ever taken by the Cassini spacecraft. It comes with great sadness that the Cassini mission will end in a few hours. Its epic Odyssean journey involved weaving between dozens of strange icy worlds, flying through plumes of water, landing a probe on the hazy surface of a mysterious world, and diving between the rings of Saturn. To our watchful eye, our humble observer, our intrepid and ever-enduring ambassador of the Ringed planet, we say goodbye. Among the Saturnian clouds may you rest in peace.
