Haunting Adelaine is getting a movie adaption.
I wanna say first that, if you don't like HA or dark romance, that's okay. You don't have to.
These are my opinion, from my perspective.
Anyway. I have come across the anti adaptation side of TikTok.
Honestly, to me, this feels like another moral panic. Just like with Fifty Shades of Grey, people have the same complaints and worries now as they had back then.
To be clear. Dark romance is a broad genre. It's a spectrum. Dark romance as we know it now, has its roots from romance novels before. Aspects of dark romance has existed before.
I understand why there is such a discourse about it. Or why media directed for women get so aggressively scrutinized.
People use the "this book glamorizes rape" or "men will use this book to excuse their violence" and other arguments like these. Sometimes I wonder if people know that portrayal doesn't automatically equal glamorisation. And then the other argument. Men will use any excuse under the sun for their mistreatment of women. If a man is going to rape a woman because of a portrayal of rape on-screen, then there's a high likelihood that they were going to rape anyway, wether or not there was rape in the media he was watching. I'm annoyed at the fact that we blame media that's directed to women for mens behavior. As if men cannot think for themselves or be responsible for their own behavior.
Me watching Dexter doesn't automatically mean that I'm okay with serial killing. Or me watching Desperate Housewives doesn't mean that I support conservatism/right wing ideology.
It is important to understand that you are not the media you consume. It's also important to be critical of the media one consumes. But also, not every media you consume has to be morally clean and pure. Art and media is a way to deal with dark, messy things.
Again. If you don't like Haunting Adelaine, that is okay. If you don't like dark romance, that is okay too.
Haunting Adelaine wasn't a book for me. I thought the book was a bit overhyped. But it's okay. It wasn't for me.
HA isn't a book for everyone. That found catharsis with this book.
Also, we have no other announcement about this. Nothing about the cast or when this movie is going to come out.
I just wanted to write this because, I haven't come across that many rational posts about this.
