Ngl I get kind of annoyed when content creators complain about parasocialism on the part of their viewers/subscribers, because a lot of them act like it's a one way thing that viewers project onto them, completely ignoring the fact that they also feed into it themselves. I mean that's literally what a content creator is, forming relationships with viewers by sharing their thoughts/opinions/ideas or expertise.

You could say that's a byproduct of them just wanting to get their word out but there's no way they wouldn't want people to respond and subscribe or react to what they're doing/saying otherwise they'd have no job and/or engagement at all?

I don't mean that in a 'you should always be grateful and never criticise your fans' way that's just literally how sharing/uploading content online/social media works (if you are intending to be a long term content creator anyway). Actively asking for engagement and responses, sharing and uploading snippets of your life to virtual strangers that you otherwise would only do for friends or family is just as parasocial as the person on the other side thinking they have a repore with you because of it.

Don't get me wrong, that stuff doesn't justify people being weird and invasive and trying to violate their private lives by stalking or harassing someone, because at the end of the day they don't actually know you and you don't know them. It's also a violation to someone's privacy or safety. But it's disingenuous and hypocritical to me to claim that parasocial behaviour is all on the viewer/follower/subscriber whatever.

The other day my wife told me about this influencer who said she needed to go on ozempic so she could go from 130 lbs down to 115 and I really cannot stress the degree to which we have so COMPLETELY lost the plot with this glp1 shit. Like not only are people are going on this shit for purely cosmetic purposes, the cosmetic purposes are delusional. This is the kind of mindset that gives people eating disorders but now because you can get a prescription instead of having to starve yourself or enduce vomiting a big swath of the general public seems eager to go along with it.
