Every instinct is screaming at her to hang up the damn phone; it’s as if her inhibitions have finally clawed their way up the surface, urging her to preserve what little dignity she has left. 

But then his voice washes her and she relaxes immediately, exhaling the worry that had only begun to build in her chest.

He sat forward, visibly debating her request as his eyes glanced around the room. How long would it take him to get to her? What would be easiest to  throw on; what was closest? Did he need to douse himself with more cologne before dashing out the  door? Would any of that even matter at this hour?

... Was he even allowed to see her   after what happened?

She spoke before she was even sure he’d picked up the phone, words tumbling haphazardly from her lips. There’s a distinct lack of slurring, but she’d only call at this time of night if she were in an  i n t o x i c a t e d  state.

He caught the tail end of her words, hearing them in a slow rhythm that he’d missed for awhile now. That familiar voice, with a hint of desperation in her tone that let him know just how lonely she’d been too. He sunk into his seat, and relaxed against its cushions.

She was an assassin, not a murderer,  though most people didn’t bother to differentiate. It mattered to her, though, in a way that made no sense to her…colleagues. It was more than just semantics — she was efficient with her hits, had her targets down as quickly and painlessly as possible; kept any unnecessary body count to the absolute minimum. So when she spotted him in public, with innocent bystanders abound, she made a decision she hoped she wouldn’t r e g r e t.

(Isabella slipped a hand into her purse, just in case.)

She smiled with a curl of her lips and a flash of white teeth, fingers brushing along the handle of her concealed blade.

He looked dangerous. He looked like he could devastate someone with just the roll of his eyes; leave you broken in two with the arch of his mouth and the venom that seeped from it. 

He was just an assassin to them, but he was also something else. Something more. At least, he liked to think so.

But she had seen passed all of that. She had looked into his eyes, stared for hours, without seeing anything more than him. No darkness. No killing. No danger. She had caught him off guard then, and she had caught him off guard  now, too.

The smoke plumed from his lips as he turned around. His body relaxed, remaining as cool and confident as he could with so many people around, but he was sure she knew better. He was sure she could tell that it was only a facade, and that he wanted the earth to open up and swallow him whole just to get away.

His eyes narrowed slightly while he put the cigarette back to his lips, inhaling it slowly. In lapses, Ezekiel took in the view, made note of her hand stuck in her purse. The notion that she would be this bold to attack him in plain sight of so many eyes made him grin.

He glances up at her, still biting his lip, fingers teasing dangerously close.
