Why is Christopher Eccleston afraid of Paul McGann?
Because McGann Hurt Eccleston.

Can we take a moment to appreciate that 50 years of a television show, with multiple writers, a reboot, and the fixing of a gaping plot hole have come together to give us the ability to make this exact pun?

Crows are smarter than you think
Crows have long been heralded for their high intelligenceāthey can remember faces, use tools, and communicate in sophisticated ways.
But a newly published study finds crows also have the brain power to solve higher-order, relational-matching tasks, and they can do so spontaneously. That means crows join humans, apes, and monkeys in exhibiting advanced relational thinking, according to the research.
āWhat the crows have done is a phenomenal feat,ā says EdĀ Wasserman, aĀ psychologyĀ professor at the University of Iowa and corresponding author of the study. āThatās the marvel of the results. Itās been done before with apes and monkeys, but now weāre dealing with a bird; but not just any bird, a bird with a brain as special to birds as the brain of an apes is special to mammals.ā
āCrows Spontaneously Exhibit Analogical Reasoning,ā which was published Dec. 18 inĀ Current Biology, was written byĀ WassermanĀ and AnnaĀ Smirnova,Ā ZoyaĀ ZorinaĀ and TanyaĀ Obozova, researchers with the Department of Biology atĀ LomonosovĀ Moscow State University in Moscow, Russia, where the study was conducted.
WassermanĀ says the Russian researchers have studied bird species for decades and that a main theme of their work is cognition. He credits his counterparts with a thoughtful and well-planned study.
āThis was a very artful experiment,āĀ WassermanĀ says. āI was just bowled over by how innovative it was.ā
The study involved two hooded crows that were at least 2 years old. First, the birds were trained and tested to identify items by color, shape, and number of single samples.
Here is how it worked: the birds were placed into a wire mesh cage into which a plastic tray containing three small cups was occasionally inserted. The sample cup in the middle was covered with a small card on which was pictured a color, shape or number of items. The other two cups were also covered with cardsāone that matched the sample and one that did not. During this initial training period, the cup with the matching card contained twoĀ mealworms; the crows were rewarded with these food items when they chose the matching card, but they received no food when they chose the other card.
Once the crows have been trained on identity matching-to-sample, the researchers moved to the second phase of the experiment. This time, the birds were assessed withĀ relationalĀ matchingĀ pairsĀ of items. These relational matching trials were arranged in such a way that neither test pairs precisely matched the sample pair, thereby eliminating control by physical identity. For example, the crows might have to choose two same-sized circles rather than two different-sized circles when the sample card displayed two same-sized squares.
What surprised the researchers was not only that the crows could correctly perform the relational matches, but that they did so spontaneouslyāwithout explicit training.
āThat is the crux of the discovery,āĀ WassermanĀ says. āHonestly, if it was only by brute force that the crows showed this learning, then it would have been an impressive result. But this feat was spontaneous.ā
Still the researchers acknowledge that the crowsā relational matching behavior did not come without some background knowledge.
āIndeed, we believe that their earlierĀ IMTSĀ (identity matching-to-sample) training is likely to have enabled them to grasp a broadly applicable concept of sameness that could apply to novel two-item samples and test stimuli involving only relational sameness,ā the researchers wrote. āJust how that remarkable transfer is accomplished represents an intriguing matter for future study.ā
Anthony Wright, neurobiology and anatomy professor at the University of Texas-Houston Medical School, says the discovery ranks on par with demonstrations of tool use by some birds, including crows.
āAnalogical reasoning, matching relations to relations, has been considered to be among the more so-called āhigher orderā abstract reasoning processes,ā he says. āFor decades such reasoning has been thought to be limited to humans and some great apes. The apparent spontaneity of this finding makes it all the more remarkable.ā
Joel Fagot, director of research at the University ofĀ Aix-MarseilleĀ in France, agrees the results shatter the notion that āsophisticated forms of cognition can only be found in our āsmartā human species. Accumulated evidence suggests that animals can do more than expected.ā
WassermanĀ concedes there will be skeptics and hopes the experiment will be repeated with more crows as well as other species. He suspects researchers will have more such surprises in store for science.
āWe have always sold animals short,ā he says. āThat human arrogance still permeates contemporary cognitive science.ā
I hate that I laughed at this
"Like a good neighbor, State Farm is there," and another one appears. And dodges the downward sweep of claws, darting to the side, bouncing off the pentagramās barriers, and tripping over the demonās tail. "In the Vatican!" she cries out as she moves, using the State Farm Agent summoning charm to modify the situation as she was taught, and mentally thanking her trainer for expecting her to be fast enough to do it on the first incantation.
Most State Farm agents, when they run into trouble, have to get the customer to do the jingle a second time. That guy with the buffalo was lucky.
The magic takes hold, and she materializes in the aisle of St. Peterās Basilica, still holding the demon by the tail, in the middle of Sunday morning Mass. The music clatters unprofessionally to a halt as laypeople, deacons, priests, monks, nuns, and the Pope all turn their attention to the surprised demon whose fifth course of dinner has turned, unaccountably, into a visit to one of his least favorite places on Earth.
There is chanting in Latin, and vaguely cross-shaped gestures, and clouds of incense, and the demon vanishes in a puff of smoke, whether from the efforts of the clergy or of his own volition no one can say. The Agent doesnāt wait, fleeing towards the doors and escaping in the confusion.
She gains the exit and walks, purposefully, toward Rome proper; there, she ducks into the nearest alley. A burner cell phone comes out of one of the less-used pockets of her purse, and she dials a number from memory.
"Allstate," says a smooth masculine voice after three rings.
"State Farm," she answers. "Iām calling in a favor."
"Yeah?" Interest. "What sort?"
As she talks sheās pulling out her smartphone, keying an app that was activated by the summoning, and pulling up the policyholder data that enabled the incantation to work.
"Insurance fraud," she said, and can almost hear teeth sharpening on the other end of the line. She gives him the name, the address, the policy number. "Someone needs some mayhem."
"Thatās my name," the man says.
She smiles. āSomeone needsĀ all the mayhem.ā
He chuckles. Slow. Evil. Even with the echoes of demonic laughter ringing in her ears, sheās impressed. āDonāt worry,ā he says, almost purring.
"Youāre in good hands."
