Wolf who struggles with alone time..
It's my 12 year anniversary on Tumblr 🥳
Father Brown: Beneath the foolish-seeming exterior there lies an analytical, supremely sympathetic man.
Lord Peter Wimsey: Beneath the foolish-seeming exterior there lies an analytical, supremely sympathetic man. Beneath him there lies another very silly man, except this one reads Donne.
Absolutely top-hole, what?

As a fellow lover of libraries (and as a librarian) feel I must share the heart breaking story of the loss of my rural university's library system.
I live in Vermont, a beautiful state full of many wonderful libraries (Story walks were actually invented in our state capital, at the Kellogg-Hubbard Library in Montepelier!)
Unfortunately, Our State University system (VSU) wants to permanently close down our University Libraries state-wide. There will be no more physical libraries for students to utilize, no librarians to help us or to connect with. Students and members of our communities will be losing a precious resource and public space. Our library system will be digitalized, online only. This will have devastating effects not only for the students and our campuses but our rural communities too.
If you'd like to learn more, here's an informative post from a fellow student!

I don't know if there's much we can do at this point, but if you can, please help us raise awareness. We love our libraries and don't want to lose them. Thank you, Neil Gaiman.
That's sad, and wrong. Happy to help publicise it.
I hear people on Tumblr talk a lot about the importance of libraries; now’s your chance to help save one! At Vermont State University is a
It is really important to me that all of you learn about Al Bean, astronaut on Apollo 12 and the fourth man to walk on the moon, who after 20 years in the US Navy and 18 years with NASA during which he spent 69 days in space and more than 10 hours doing EVAs on the moon , retired to become a painter.
He is my favorite astronaut for any number of reasons, but he’s also one of my favorite visual artists.
Like, look at this stuff????
It’s all so expressive and textured and colorful! He literally painted his own experience on the moon! And that's just really fucking cool to me!
Just look at this! This is one of my absolute favorite emotions of all time. Is Anyone Out There? is like the ultimate reaction image. Any time I have an existential crisis, this is how I picture myself.
And then there's this one:
The Fantasy
For all of the six Apollo missions to land on the moon, there was no spare time. Every second of their time on the surface was budgeted to perfection: sleeping, eating, putting on the suits, entering and exiting the LEM, rock collection, setting up longterm experiments to transmit data back to Earth, everything. These timetables usually got screwed over by something, but for the most part the astronauts stuck to them.
The crew of Apollo 12 (Pete Conrad, Al Bean, and Dick Gordon) had other plans. Conrad and Bean had snuck a small camera with a timer into the LEM to take a couple pictures together on the moon throughout the mission. They had hidden the key for the timer in one of the rock collection bags, with the idea being to grab the key soon after landing, take some fun photos here and there, and then sneak the camera back to Earth to develop them. They had practiced where they would hide the key and how to get it out from under the collected rocks back on Earth dozens of times.
But when they got to the moon, the key was nowhere to be found. Al Bean spent precious time digging through the collection bags before he called it off. The camera had been pushing their luck anyways, he couldn't afford to spend anymore time not on the mission objectives. Conrad and Bean continued the mission as per the NASA plan while Dick Gordon orbited overhead.
Fast forward to the very end of the mission. Bean and Conrad are doing last checks of the LEM before they enter for the last time and depart from the moon. As Bean is stowing one of the collection bags, the camera key falls out. The unofficially planned photo time has come and gone, and he tosses the key over his shoulder to rest forever on the surface of the moon.
This painting, The Fantasy, is that moment. There have never been three people on the moon at the same time, there was never an unofficial photo shoot on the moon, this picture could never have happened.
"The most experienced astronaut was designated commander, in charge of all aspects of the mission, including flying the lunar module. Prudent thinking suggested that the next-most-experienced crew member be assigned to take care of the command module, since it was our only way back home. Pete had flown two Gemini flights, the second with Dick as his crewmate. This left the least experienced - me - to accompany the commander on the lunar surface.
"I was the rookie. I had not flown at all; yet I got the prize assignment. But not once during the three years of training which preceded our mission did Dick say that it wasn't fair and that he wished he could walk on the moon, too. I do not have his unwavering discipline or strength of character.
"We often fantasized about Dick's joining us on the moon but we never found a way. In my paintings, though, I can have it my way. Now, at last, our best friend has come the last sixty miles." - Al Bean, about The Fantasy.

Comfort Object~
A special silent comic commissioned by super kickstarter backer Zachary, who asked for this comic showing them taking comfort in a beloved toy/object during a difficult time. It was a lovely experience to make someone elses special comic concept for them and fitted in easily with the stutterhug style of soft comics - thankyou again Zach!

Anthony was a nice guy. A bloody coward. But a nice guy.
Nope. Nopey nope. I don’t accept this. After jilting an Earl’s daughter at the altar, he would have been a pariah in county life. He would lose his standing in society and some/all of his friends. He knew this, AND HE STILL DID THE THING HE THOUGHT THE BEST FOR EDITH. Because he loved her.
Cold Feet AU (A Modern Downton Andith AU)
I’ve been subscribed to the BritBox streaming service for a while which has given me access to all the episodes of Cold Feet (original and the new series). As I started working on my period Downton Abbey Andith AU I realized I needed more Robert Bathurst in my life and started watching Cold Feet. It’s from this context, and an interview in which when asked “Beatles v. Rolling Stones” Bathurst immediately replied “The Who”, that this AU is born. I have borrowed much of the gist of Cold Feet in developing this AU, although I did cut out about 90% of the infidelity and marriage merry-go-round. Unlike the show I don’t have 10 seasons to try and fill. Also, unlike David Marsden (Robert Bathurst’s character) Anthony has his shit way WAY more together.
the short version:
Edith and Anthony meet in modern day Ripon and fall in love. However, just because a World War doesn’t come between them doesn’t mean their relationship isn’t without its obstacles. There’s of course her family, as disapproving as ever of anything that Edith loves. And then there’s his friends… They provide him with love and support as well as … many many questions as to if this is a real relationship or just his midlife crisis.
Longer version under cut

Why can’t I add more (LOTS MORE) hearts to this? I *need* it!
Rewatching Downton Abbey and having some a lot of thoughts about Edith. Spoilers ahead through season 3.
I like Edith despite her many missteps, despite the awful second-hand embarrassment I get from watching her stumble through things, desperately seeking a kind word and someone, anyone, who will see her and value her. She wants that recognition of her personhood, and her value as a human being, and that kindness and affection so badly that she makes some incredibly terrible decisions in pursuit of the vaguest hints that she might find one of those things. She wants so very badly that the wanting blinds her to things that should be really obvious.
See, for example, that entire fiasco with the Drakes. The most heartbreaking thing about that isn’t that she’s made another bad romantic decision (which she most certainly has). It’s that she’s found a place where she can be useful, where she enjoys what she’s doing, where she is appreciated, where she is wanted (and yes those latter two have big asterisks) and she is so enraptured by the combination that I think she genuinely doesn’t understand either that what she and Mr. Drake did was wrong, or that that is the reason she’s being let go.
She has so much to learn, and it is slow going indeed.
The first time I watched this show, I was terribly disappointed when Sir Anthony didn’t end up asking her to marry him at of the first season. They got on well, had shared interests, and they did seem like they genuinely liked each other. Sir Anthony seemed like a good and kind man who cared about Edith, and Edith seemed to genuinely care about him as well. At this point we’d seen her try to catch the attention of other people with whom she had less in common, and we saw enough of her with Sir Anthony to see that her interest in him as a person as opposed to simply a marriage partner was genuine, or became so. And Edith’s home life clearly wasn’t great.
I still think everything about that is true, except that I no longer think it would have been a good idea for them to become engaged and married in the first season. Rewatching it, it is so clear that she does need more experience of the world and more experiences with people who are kind to her, before she makes that decision. It’s ironic that it’s later that Anthony worries about trapping her with marriage, because later is when she knows her own mind much better. She’s still learning in season 1 and season 2, still searching for her own way. By the time they do in fact get in engaged and almost married, she is ready for a decision of that magnitude. She’s learned and lived more, she’s known him longer, she’s had time to think. By season 3 she’s not in her first flush of affection for him.
And when Edith has learned her own mind better, it becomes all the more frustrating that her family continues to disregard her opinions, and to assume that they know better for her than she does for herself.
I agree with absolutely every word. Hear hear!
