this was all about how necessary community is.
that elderly man going to the ER because samira is a friend to him. the obese man who lives alone tearing up at genuine human kindness and acceptance. digby being someone who can mourn louie when he seemed so alone. the hospice patient being able to relax once her parents show up. the college student’s parents being able to accept help from someone that looks like them who’s gone through the same thing.
they keep reiterating how you can’t get through things alone. the jewish community needs muslims, the doctors need pharmacists, dana needs robby. there’s all these macro and micro interactions that enforce this thesis. there are cultural, structural, professional, communal, and interpersonal vectors of support that are so necessary.
these doctors understand this truth deeply, they see the evidence of it daily. but every single one of these doctors is isolated. samira isn’t moving back to new jersey, robby is leaving for canada, dennis leaves for the farm, garcia denies trinity’s company. physician heal thyself, huh?
not tagging because that feels like putting someone on blast but…
i know people like to belittle robby’s importance to the show/other characters but like….what do you think that last shot was about? where it’s dana and robby wondering how they’ll get through this? they’re leaning on each other. robby needs dana too, they’re long time coworkers who have developed a friendship.
is dana incapable of performing her job without robby? no. but he is an emotional pillar for her, even if he’s an asshole sometimes. she trusts his competency and management skills. denying that is just missing the point of the whole show.
Popewhit idea
Dr Abbott gets his estranged half brother hired on as security at the hospital were pope struggles to fit in. Pope often mutters answers to himself minutes after questions are asked and Whitaker is the only one who hears.

Saturday morning off
Charley horse so bad I started speaking in a British accent
I am currently reading Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston, and it's adding a new layer in how I view Pearline's character.
To be fair, a lot of the joking I see surrounding her character seems playful and in good fun, but I think it's important to look at the historical context surrounding her choice to have an affair with Sammie.
Women during this time period often did not marry for love. Marrying for love, in fact, was a privilege. This goes triple for Black women. In Hurston's book, the protagonist is first married off to an old man when she is still just a child. Her grandmother made the decision for her, which, of course, is awful, but her grandmother comes from a background of *slavery* and her own daughter was conceived from rape at the hands of the slave owner. Despite escaping slavery *with* said daughter, the daughter is not able to escape rape either, as it happens to her when she goes to school. The protagonist, herself, was conceived from from rape. Because the grandmother doesn't expect to live much longer, she gives her granddaughter away to someone who she thinks can take care of her and protect her.
The protagonist later runs away with another older man who is able to provide for her, but also wishes to control her. She doesn't have a good quality of life despite being more well off than others. When he dies, she marries a much younger man (she's near 40 and he's 25) who is flawed but who she actually likes and who actually excites her.
I can only assume that Pearline very well could likely be in a similar position. She's young and pretty, but likely was not motivated by love when she married. She was likely motivated by *necessity* and *security.* Perhaps her husband was also a much older man who failed to excite her.
I don't think it's fair to simplify her character as just a "cheater." Pearline wasn't happy in her marriage, but in her time, a happy marriage was a luxury. This is due to a system set up by MEN. Ironically, it's also a system that gave women more incentive to cheat.
idk if this is a young fan thing or new fandom culture but some of yall think fics are abandoned way too quickly. a few months or a year or two is not unusual to go without a fic update. sometimes fics take longer to write, other times writers have rl events, or maybe there's multiple fics and one gets more priority. there are tons of reasons for fics not to be updated every week or every month. it also isn't uncommon for people to come back and update fics after a number of years—ive read updates that took five, or ten years. people's lives change, but they still want to tell their stories. personally, i never consider a fic abandoned unless the author has said so; though if it's been a few years i manage my expectations. but a last update being a year ago is... generally not a sign that a writer has abandoned their fic
That! Exactly that!!! Writers have lives and writing is hard! It takes time. Stop assuming fics are abandoned!
Original fic usually goes through this same process before being commercially published. Readers just don't know that bc they aren't receiving it in bite-size chunks online. Large periods of stagnant writing are historically just another Monday for most writers.
This☝️.

the thing that really cheeses my cake about flies getting in my house is they clearly don't want to be there anyway. like at least the ants trying to steal cereal from my pantry had a goal and a plan. you are just here because you're too stupid to use a window twice
O Romeo, Romeo
sometimes I think about how rattlesnakes are starting to adapt to bite immediately instead of using their rattle as a warning, because this defense mechanism that says "im here! im frightened! don't come close or ill bite you" has instead ilicited a reaction of "oh fuck a rattlesnake, i should kill it"
so of course every snake that has the instinct to warn humans of its presence gets killed, and only the snakes that bite first and dont make themselves known get to survive. a human who's been bitten is too worried about his swelling ankle to decapitate a snake with a shovel.
it's a good example of how humans make the world more dangerous for ourselves by believing that we have mastery and ownership of it. we think we have the power and importance to control the life around us down to the snakes and insects, but every animal fights for life. and no animal thinks that any human is more important than it's own life.
unicorn sticker sheet!

my only take from Weapons - the commentary on how community doesn't exist in america unless tragedy knocks at their doorstep. hard. even then what people form - it's not a community, more like a mob. and no one wants to work together (that mom who didn't want to share cctv footage). no one listens (911 operator didn't inform the police right away about the call from the drug addict; no matter how ridiculous that call sounded, they had to check it out bc it's been a month! and they had no leads! and yet...). no one talks (that teacher who saw Alex at the parking lot waiting alone). the system affects us all. it doesn't differentiate between big cities and small towns. it doesn't care and it will never care.
