‘The Laughing Heart’ (1993), by Charles Bukowski, is here recited by American musician and composer, Tom Waits. The poem was published posthumously, in 1996:
your life is your life
don’t let it be clubbed into dank submission.
be on the watch.
there are ways out.
there is a light somewhere.
it may not be much light but
it beats the darkness.
be on the watch.
the gods will offer you chances.
know them.
take them.
you can’t beat death but
you can beat death in life, sometimes.
and the more often you learn to do it,
the more light there will be.
your life is your life.
know it while you have it.
you are marvelous
the gods wait to delight
in you.

So yesterday I took a brief walk around my neighborhood, and I decided to bring my camera along. I saw this angel in a garden. This picture called out for a black and white treatment. I haven’t snapped a photo in some time - I felt good with the camera in my hand.
Read, read, read. Read everything -- trash, classics, good and bad, and see how they do it. Just like a carpenter who works as an apprentice and studies the master. Read! You'll absorb it. Then write. If it's good, you'll find out. If it's not, throw it out of the window.
— William Faulkner.
Good advice.

They created religion and politics instead ,,, sucked ever since.
This quote by Sartre appears more prophetic than when he wrote it back in the 1940's.
John Sayles gave a recent interview to coincide with Criterion Collection release of “Lone Star”(1996), among one of his best films. For years Sayles has worked hard to independently finance his films outside the studio system that allows Sayles more control of his cinematic vision. Sayles came up in the business working for Roger Corman (king of schlock). Sayles took 30k he earned working for Corman to finance his first film, "Return of the Secaucus Seven"(1980) which introduced Sayles as a filmmaker to watch. I was taken by Sayles' quote in the interview and turned it into this graphic.
