Don't get me wrong, I don't want to hate rickorty. I don't want to look back at five years of my life with resentment. I hate that I've allowed this experience to tarnish season nine for me, which, after the finale, I was prepared to call my favorite season.
But the way the fandom is lately, especially rickortytwt, has put me off. All this "hivemind" talk. Sure, it's said in jest... but is it? Is it really? There doesn't seem to be room for dissenting opinion there. The fact that I kept seeing rickortys using anti rhetoric did not help.
And all that would have been tolerable, but fuck me if I didn't get sucked into the hivemind, where I did not want to be.

My love for rickorty has been primarily dependent on my ability to pretend it's some idealized heartfelt fluff nonsense, while in the back (far back, like tied up in the trunk) of my mind is the awareness that holy shit this ship is fucked up on so many levels even if it seems happy. I need both of these to enjoy the ship.
But recent events in the fandom (i.e. post after post of people talking about how abusive Rick is to Morty) have led to me being unable to do the "pretend it's fluffy" thing and so I am left with only the abuse element of their relationship. I cannot see it for anything but what it literally, actually is. There's nothing wrong with shipping a problematic ship and focusing on how problematic it is, of course, but it doesn't appeal to me. I prefer being delulu while darkness is lurking in the background.
Unfortunately, now that I am unable to view the ship in the way that allowed me to enjoy it, I fucking despise it. I never want to create art or write fics for it again. If I never see it again, it will be too soon.
