Do we think Donna Tartt had a detailed idea in her mind of what exactly Henry's accident was, or did she throw it in to add to his mystery, and didn't expect that thirty years on people would still be speculating about what happened?
Ages ago, I listened to one of her interviews, and in this interview she is asked where Julian goes after he flees Hampden and her response is 'after a character leaves the world of a book, the author doesn't know any more about them than the reader does.' So I wonder if she would apply this to all that happened before the novel starts.
Francis was prepared to choose death over getting a job, he’s just like Bunny fr
Francis saying to Richard that everything is okay once they’ve got the letter off Julian is so funny because didn’t care at allll. Richard and Henry both feel so much shame knowing that Julian knows what they did whereas Francis is like “ayyyy he’s not gonna tell the police everything is perfect🤪🤪🤪”
how do u guys think henry and camilla started seeing each other . did one of them confess to the other? im just not sure how much i imagine it happening. maybe henry noticed, and sort of prodded into that direction . idk im stuck on this, does anyone have an opinion on it
I imagine it being a sort of gradual, natural thing rather than there having been some grand declaration from either of them. There's tension between them from the start, then by the end they're sleeping in a hotel room together
i agree with the gradual thing. maybe one day henry brought it up to her casually. maybe they didnt say anything at all and it was a silent agreement.
I imagine them being alone then, having a moment, and it progressing privately from there. I can’t see Henry doing the whole “will you be my girlfriend” thing. I can imagine him addressing it practically, “Well, I quite like you so would you be willing to embark on a romantic journey with me?” lol, I exaggerate. He’s just so formal with his way of speaking, I can’t see him doing anything too sentimental or fluffy. He’s more deeds than words.
Who knows if Henry telling her ‘I love you’ before putting the gun to his head was the first time he’d said that? I like to think it wasn’t…

richard keeping it real
I like to imagine Henry discussing Richard's reaction to the whole thing with Francis and the twins. This bit obviously happens before Francis enters the scene - I wonder how he would've reacted to Richard asking that.
'So, I told Richard about the bacchanal and the man we killed.'
'What did he say? Is he frightened? Did he threaten to tell anyone?'
'No, he just asked about the sex bit.'
“Well? Aren’t they !?” Lmao he said “I wanna hear you say”
It's soooo funny. Especially Richard describing him as looking like a PRIEST. If we take what Henry says at face value, it doesn't at all seem like he was motivated by *that* aspect of it. From what he says at the end about how it allowed him 'to live without thinking,' I think he genuinely was more interested in the spiritual aspect of it, and was probably not expecting that to be Richard's first question. It seems that it was Julian's class on The Bacchae that started it all. He's so weird, I once had a class on The Bacchae and I can't say I've attempted to actually have a bacchanal. "Men will do anything but go to therapy"

Moments of foreshadowing in The Secret History:
When Bunny’s body is found, Henry, ‘took a deep breath then closed his eyes; and exhaling sharply, a hand to his chest, fell back in his chair as if he’d been shot.’ Then Richard, at Bunny’s house before the funeral says ‘we had been there only twenty minutes and already I felt like shooting myself.’ In the end it is Henry who shoots himself, and Richard who gets shot.
Henry was 21 translating Paradise Lost into LATIN just because he felt like it, because he could, and I'm 23 struggling with my master's dissertation about a book written in English, which is also my only language. I'm literally Bunny. It might be time to leave George Eliot on the 'shore of metahmeralism' and space the lines an inch apart so it looks like a menu.

Henry trying the milkshake Bunny liked after killing him:
Charles shot Richard and they never spoke again, cool
A Camilla moment no one talks about is her wearing khaki trousers to kill Bunny
And what of it?
Nothing queen, it was a serve. I respect you dressing for the occasion.
A Camilla moment no one talks about is her wearing khaki trousers to kill Bunny
And what of it?
The concept of Charles drunk driving when his parents died in a car accident...
this feels intentional, I just can't decide what it means

‘“Wish us luck,” said Henry. I clapped him awkwardly on the shoulder. “Good luck,” I said.’
Dear Richard, do wish me luck before I murder my best friend tomorrow.
and people say this book is too pretentious and not funny
