Book Review - 15/10/18

The Book Thief - Markus Zusak

Rating - 10/10

This has to be one of my favourite books of all time, as it takes such an interesting and unique perspective compared to many of the books written around this era.

After reading ‘The Fault in our Stars’ I didn’t think I would tear up as much reading a character’s story, but this novel proved me wrong. Crying is an understatement. There is always a particular book that touches your heart and makes you feel agony, pain, and happiness all at the same time. This is the perfect example of “that book”.

The novel is centred around the experiences of Liesel Meminger, a young foster girl living outside of Munich in Nazi Germany. Separated from her mother, and with her brother having recently passed away, Liesel fixates on learning how to read and collecting books as a way to cope within in a world at war. The book contains powerful characters themselves, bringing solace to herself and others, contrasting against the destruction that is happening all around her, truly highlighting the innocence of a child growing up in conflict and in a world she doesn’t understand.

I think the first thing that touched me when reading this novel was the choice of narrator. The story is told from the unique perspective of Death himself, which leaves the reader questioning not only the personalities of the characters in the story, but also the character of Death against this stereotypical view of a 'Grim Reaper’ figure with a cloak and scythe. At first, I was sceptical about the idea of Death as narrator, as I was concerned it would cast a dark shadow over this heart-warming story, however I was (again) proven wrong. In fact, I think that having the character of Death narrate the story added to the book, almost creating another layer in which the reader can explore.

Aside from the story itself, the style of writing and use of words is not something anyone can just do - it’s art. Zusak’s gift for writing is incredible and he uses words in such a way to paint emotion, creating a visual landscape, unlike anything I have read before.

To put it simply, The Book Thief is a masterpiece. Every aspect of this book was beautiful yet so intriguing and I was competently captivated from the first chapter. I would without a doubt, recommend this book to anyone and will myself continue to read and re-read this book.
