Goree Island's Underground Man.
If you ever go to Senegal's Goree Island and you make it to the peak of the Island you will find a mysterious man who lives underground.
Like other people who live on Goree Island, they benefit in many ways from the several tourists who come to the Island to learn about the terrible slave castle. Many Goree Island inhabitants make things, and sell them. People buy them.
The mystery man in these photos makes things out of used and old materials and he lives underground - rent, bills free.
At first his living quarters which appeared to be scattered with all kinds of junk looked spooky, but the more we spoke to him the more we understood why.
"People come here and the leave things, all kinds of the stuff", the man said in his native language Wolof.
And his art was quite creative. Old white baby dolls heads glues to slender black bodies representing African women, metals from all sort of knick knacks were pasted on stones which amazingly ended up making something is what his art looked like.
His art is indeed interesting but what took us for a spin was his entire lifestyle.
Goree Island has an extremely sparse population, made up of about 2,000 people. The most attraction Goree island gets is from tourists. Boats departing from Dakar drops off loads of people daily. During the summer large groups of younger Senegalese head to Goree to play in the water.
Outside of this the island can be rather lonely. You'd think one would head on over to Dakar and get in the hustle and bustle of that city.
"This is my island" he said.
He explained that on Goree he has no stress and that he is protected by the spirits of the island. Living underground has become his normal and he has the spirit of a nomad.
We can dig it.
We wonder if he is still there.
RWANDA: It's been 20 years since the Rwandan Genocide and on this episode of Africa In The City, Tracy travels to Kigali, Rwanda's capital to find out just how Rwandans have moved on since the deadly violence that claimed the lives of more than 800,000 members of the Tutsis ethnic group and some Hutus. Current President Paul Kagame is credited with Rwanda's successful transition from genocide into a country with aggressive infrastructural and medical developments. Rwanda, today is considered a success story, but for many Rwandans the advances in the country today can never erase the memories of the past.
FA Give Us...Our Sins..Amen.
Rwanda Kigali,
All sorts of emotions run through you here. Genocide.HotelRwanda.Murder.Tutsi.Hutu.
Kigali today is of course very different. The small east African country has transitioned from slaughter and famine during Genocide to a developed region in Africa.
The roads are paved. The city is generally clean. Clubs are scarce. Big buses rep as city public transportation. Fancy restaurants are everywhere.
People seem not be worried that nightlife is pretty nonexistent. They seem content with the soldiers posted up at random street corners holding rifles.
And it's true that not a single opposition voice can be found in the city. Everyone is just fine with the leadership and direction of Rwandan President Paul Kagame.
He's been running the country since Rwanda's first Pres. Juvenal Habyarimana's plane was shot down, which many believe Kagame had a lot to do with.
But it's simple to read through the signs. Just look hard enough...
Get A Ride Girl.
Motorcylce Taxis in Rwanda Kigali are know to be the preferred mode of transport. Easy and quick. These youthful drivers zoom you around the small and quiet city quickly. But....check their drug/alcohol levels. It's no secret that many of them may be drunk, tipsy or on another influence....
She still gets on.
Have fun.

Miley Cyrus Can Really Fucking Sing.
We don't like all of her songs - but she tends to drop random tracks that are fantastic and she often works on collaborations that really show you the power of her vocals. Forget her whole transition from country music to something like pop/hiphop. The once small town country TV star AKA Hannah Montanna, still blends her traditional country sounds in with her new aged style.
Like on this track, Real and True, with rapper Future, his wildly amazing self. Miley is so simply blowing in this song. Her country riffs are so subtle but so important to the track. Real and True is almost a year old but it's one of those tracks that shows Miley's balance between her new transition and her old way of singing and performing.
And actually we like Miley Cirus. She may seem wild these days, wearing her boobs out and popping her coochie for the world to see. She's even twerking like crazy, but look, she just gave 500k to combat HIV AIDS. It's a commendable move. She even gave a speech.
Anyway. go Miley Curus.

Brazil. Racism? Nooooo

Oh..Brazil...
On this episode of Africa In The City, Tracy travels to Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro to explore what it means to be black in the country today. Although more and more Brazilians are identifying as black or Afro-Brazilian the county still remains divided along racial lines with many reports highlighting racial inequalities and disadvantages for Afro-Brazilians. In Rio, Tracy meets with a prominent Candomble priest who discovered that his mission in life is to be a spiritual and political guide for his people. She also travels to an isolated Quilombolas,a former slave territory, to see how the battle for land rights is being fought. And that's not all! Make sure to keep watching for an exciting Capoeira performance. HOLLER!
