Nothing could be more disgusting than the one impression; nothing more delightful than the other. It all depended on the point of view.

With you, I loved multiplicatively the sheen of morning’s sun And cold coffee in mugs, because we always got distracted.
Low | rec. 2014, United Arab Emirates
There were so many songs that had fallen between the cracks. Loose ends that seemed to go on forever without any resolution. They say that perhaps you must lose things in order to find them again, that this can renew our sensibilities about the world. At the 8:20 mark of this song, I found something that I never wanted to ever lose.
Let me tell you about the intervening years.
Mid century (c. 2015)
I and I had become conflated.
We had, beforehand, existed independently of one another for some time. I picked up the slack when I got home, and I carried the weight when I went away again. The I who lived abroad saw things that affected the way he saw other things: sunsets over Istanbul and sunrise among the ruins of Auschwitz, days for which I prayed to end in the Arabian desert and one night that could have lasted forever in Budapest. But soon he wanted to get home. The I at home made money and stuck his nose in books. He grew callous about the world he saw, full of corporate pretenders and academic pretenses. He wanted to get away.
Both I and I longed for the other. And we were both bad versions of me. Parts that basked in the excess of my extremes. 5 long years, and I'm still looking for a place to belong. I can't run forever, but nor can I squat.

Philosophy is to be studied, not for the sake of any definite answers to its questions, since no definite answers can, as a rule, be known to be true, but rather for the sake of the questions themselves; because these questions enlarge our conception of what is possible, enrich our intellectual imagination and diminish the dogmatic assurance which closes the mind against speculation; but above all because, through the greatness of the universe which philosophy contemplates, the mind also is rendered great, and becomes capable of that union with the universe which constitutes its highest good.
Bertrand Russell, The Problems of Philosophy (via awake-society)
Life is pain, Highness. Anyone who says differently is selling something.
It felt good to roll up my sleeves and do something that gave back to the community tonight. I realized recently that I look just as pretentious as anyone else if I talk about international development in DC at weekend gin parties in the brownstones of Ivy League yuppies (who are wonderful people, don't get me wrong). If you don't lift a finger to address needs in your own background, don't talk to me about global diplomacy.
And that goes for you too, Henry Kissinger.
Have I mentioned that Steinways are pianos sent straight from God?Â
This is called A Hopeful Thing.Â

Corrosive harangue My old cautionary tale Flash! All blown to hell.
Reading about American foreign policy seems infinitely more appropriate with a beer in one hand.
I freaking graduated. I’ve been away from Tumblr for way too long.

My mother captured a rather pensive moment, I suppose.
I also miss this beard.

Terrorism is the cancer of our age, and the new geopolitical order will split between countries that support terrorism and countries that don't.
I don't usually wax political, but once in a while, I have a little of something to say.
When I lived in the Middle East for the first half of 2014, I engaged many people in conversation about the post 9/11 world, and young men and women from Palestine to Somalia challenged me to revisit the American approach to foreign policy. They humbled me by questioning instead of attacking. (I felt some shame at the lack of reciprocity from my county to theirs.) My experiences in Egypt, Oman, the UAE, and Turkey taught me that a black-and-white, hyper-moralistic way of apprehending the Islamic world is an approach that will undermine ways of life everywhere.
This is a 21st century world, and the traditional conditions of conflict are changed. Our military no longer fights countries but cell groups. No longer states but virulent ideologies. So it bothers me when a religion of billions is condemned for the actions of an extremist micro-minority.
I've read much on this subject, but the best summary is a single, 740-word column published in the New York Times... just 3 days after September 11th. Almost 14 years later, I encourage you to read and then to compare its wisdom against the pathway we have chosen for ourselves. And to think about the world in which each of us truly would wish to live.

One of my favorite things in the world to do is to play the quiz that asks me to name all of the countries of the world and their capitals, while listening to the Piano Concerto in G Major by Ravel. I've probably done this over 200 times in the past year.
The raspberry hot chocolate at Escribá was 70% cacao (really really dark) and thick as molasses. If I had let it cool down any further, it would have become a cup of solid chocolate. It redefined dessert for me. (The raspberry macaroon was good, too.)
