Wilton Carpet, Charles Voysey, manufactured by Tomkinson and Adam, 1896, Kidderminster, England, machine woven wool, V&A.Â
At the end of the 19th century, Charles Voysey was one of England's most influential architects and designers. In 1882, he set up an architecture practice and from the late 1880s started to design repeating patterns for wallpaper and woven printed textiles and carpets. The most interesting designs from this period are dominated by flowing patterns with pastel coloured birds, animals, hearts and flowers in silhouette. Voysey's designs were well known in mainland Europe, influencing both the Art Nouveau movement and the Modern Movement.Â
Board Game, 'Wallis' Picturesque Round Game of the Produce and Manufacturers of the Counties of England and Wales', published by John Passmore, c.1850, London, hand-coloured etching and aquatint on linen, V&A.Â
From the V&A:Â
This is a geographical race game played on a map of England and Wales. The map is divided into counties with representations of local landmarks and industry. There are 151 playing spaces. The play is a circular one, with the starting space at the River Thames and the end space in London. This particular game was sold by E. Gibbons, dealer in German and French fancy goods, at 15 North Street, Bristol.

Culture and Kitsch is back!
Having taken a little break from blogging (actually its been a while…nearly 4 months, eeeek!) Culture and Kitsch is back! Sometimes life just gets in the way, and with a new Masters course and new job to adapt to over the last few months, unfortunately the blog took a bit of a back seat - but now I'm excited to start it up again, and am hunting out lots of wonderful objects for my lovely followers.Â
Thank you for sticking around! C xx
