And on the topic of a friend’s ugly boyfriend, I want to say that a lot of what I think makes these people hideous isn’t inborn characteristics they cannot change. Ugly has a more nebulous definition in the south. A friend’s ugly boyfriend shows up to meet his girlfriend’s friends for the first time with a terrible haircut and unwashed hair, wearing an unwashed Marvel shirt and cargo shorts not because he had no access to a shower or a laundromat but because he felt no need to put any effort into his appearance and try to make a good impression on her friends because he truly does not care. People who care about a new partner try to impress them, they try to groom and style themselves to be more attractive, they do the bare minimum and take a shower before going to a convention. Cishet men in straight relationships tend to be more likely to severely drop the ball on grooming and styling habits when it would be common decency to make an attempt to look good. It is sad when a woman spends hours getting ready and doing her hair and makeup for a date and picks an outfit she thinks is cute because she wants to look good and she wants him to like her and the guy is a total slob who wasn’t trying to be appealing and wasn’t willing to inconvenience himself enough to put on a clean shirt. Jesus fucking Christ, take a shower, put on a little cologne, style your hair and wear a nice shirt or something. Your dad was doing it in the 80s. There are YouTube tutorials if you don’t know what to do.

i'll never understand why some people have a problem with trigger warnings. if the content being warned for doesn't bother you then you can just use it as a recommendation. literally where is the problem. everyone wins.

I will reiterate over and over again that chronically ill and disabled people have always existed. We have evidence Neanderthals took care of members of their community who became disabled after a serious injury or were born with disabilities like Down Syndrome. Yes, many more illnesses ‘just killed you’ before modern medicine but the lack of modern medicine meant there were even more people struggling with chronic ill health. Institutionalization and the stigma around discussing disabilities and illnesses is the reason you think there were fewer people with disabilities and chronic health concerns, not reality. Bad backs, bad lungs, bad stomachs, mobility issues, poor eyesight, poor hearing, countless other things that range from mild annoyances to serious life-limiting disabilities. We have always existed. Pretending like there was a time in history where a sizable portion of the human population wasn’t chronically ill or disabled is historical revisionism.

We should always be thinking “How do we make the world better for disabled people and how can we prevent acquired disabilities like post-viral chronic illness and lifelong injuries from things like motor vehicle accidents?” and not “How do we stop disabled people from surviving and existing in public?”

‘Survival of the fittest’ never referred to survival of only the most healthy and robust individuals, it is about an organism’s ability to adapt. Humans are social creatures. You can be the most genetically sound and physically fit human being on earth and if you break your leg and there is no one to help you, you die. Caring for our most vulnerable, sick and/or weak community members is a core part of what it means to be human and if we didn’t not have that drive, we’d go extinct.

I think it's actually healthy to have at least one life aspiration that's abnormal to want and impracticable to achieve. It lends a sense of perspective.
