Thinking about how Mike lost Will in every season.
The never ending story of Mike Wheeler's depression. Yay.
Yet another actual crime of setting up another beautiful and powerful friendship that was then simply ignored 😩
El: Mike I’m really sorry. We have to break up, I realized I have a crush on your best friend.
Mike: What?! I was going to break up with you because I have a crush on my best friend.
El: What?
Mike: What?
Problematic writing choices of the Duffers:
This post will be focusing on problematic tropes (more so than the many plot holes).Prior to this, I thought some of these writing choices were intentional subtext and symbolism for a greater plot point (and that these tropes would later be subverted) . This wasn't the case. I'm mentioning these tropes now: for people to grasp why we shouldn't reward the Duffers in their future projects. And how normalizing these tropes (in main stream shows) will negatively impact future story telling for the worse.
Fridging trope: El embodies this as her death is used as a catalyst for various male character's development in the finale. The Duffers saying El was never going to be with the gang in the end , because she "represents the magic of childhood" for the boys is just sad. Because yes-characters can represent something but writers need to understand they're MORE than just a symbol of something (they're also a person/character in the narrative). The fact she also represents the magic of childhood of all things is awfully portrayed since Jane herself never even had a real childhood - and because of the writers , she's also deprived of an adulthood .
In s5, bringing back Kali (one of the only brown girls in the show) to essentially just make her suffer and die. They brought her back: k*lled her found family , had her tortured by the gov again, and then she's shot by the gov. God forbid, a brown girl shoots her white oppressors (the writers have to k*ll her the same way she offed her abusers). Kali targeting her ab*sers was portrayed as morally questionable/nuanced in the show. But white Jim & Nancy mowing down random soldiers with bullets, or El killing a bunch of American/soviet soldiers was just to make them look 'bad ass'. The audience never has to question their morality for doing so- only Kali's. If you believe's mike's theory: that would mean they just used Kali to save and give the white heroine a happy ending (which is gross optics in and of itself).
If you believe that El died along with Kali (this is also problematic). They couldn't let El/Kali : the victims of government oppression and abuse get a "happy ending" . In fact both die due to the government .What an uplifting message during these fraught political times. Remember Hopper’s speech where the whole point was Kali/El shouldn’t have to off themselves since they deserve a happy ending (despite life being unfair to them constantly)? What was the point? Idk , if you don't die , off yourself if life has been cruel.Killing El / kali to stop the "cycle " isn’t empowering at all. It’s a harmful message to ab*se survivors!!!

how life feels now that everyone has stopped dooming and glooming after vol 2 and we’re back to our analyzing roots
we’ve all bought our one way tickets to byler endgame (non-refundable)
so many funny characters on post volume two byler tumblr. we've got:
bylers who are completely unshaken and confused by the drama
og finale byler truthers who quote the duffer's korrasami tweet fourteen times a day
fan art and ao3 bylers keeping us satiated with fix-its
bylers who are fully in the depression stage of grief and are taking a leave of absence
bylers who are in the bargaining stage of grief teaming up with bylertwt to prove cutgate real
pissed off bylers who are angry at the very idea of cutgate and just want the band aid ripped off
hopeful bylers who are literally too afraid to reblog any theories out of fear of jinxing it
angry duffer hating bylers who are fully prepared to boycott every duffer project from now on and place some kind of spell on them
sad duffer hating bylers who can't believe just how bad the writing has gotten
ex shawn levy glazing bylers who are literally too stunned to speak
"everything is political" bylers who are concerned about the state of popular media if this ends up being bait and are blaming the whole ordeal on late stage capitalism
unsure bylers who are a different one every hour.
it's dark on here.
I AM GOING TO CRYYY
✅ mike singled out in the script
✅ mike having a different reaction to will coming out than everyone else
✅ mike wearing camouflage during the scene
✅ the camera cutting to mike when will says "im ready to show him i'm not afraid anymore."
✅ the scene literally ending on mike and will making eye contact
✅ confirmation that mike is now certain will has a "crush" on him
✅ the only relationships in the show that werent resolved in vol2 being byler and mileven
✅ shawn levy saying that finn had a lot of emotional weight to carry this season despite little, if any, of it being in vol1 and vol2
idk this is all i could think of off the top of my head im actually at like 97% byler confidence now
oh and by the way :
will says "i don't like girls" and it cuts to mike.
will says "i mean i do, just not like you guys" and it cuts to lucas and dustin.
do what you want with this information.

starting a collection of my new favourite type of st post
Coping hard rn with the dogshit TV that is ST5 vol 2, so Byler kiss it is!
(Seriously though, Byler is endgame. I didn't lose hope)
“it [the coming out] was just so much pressure (...) and having the whole cast standing there watching like a press-conference was nerve-wracking.” —Noah in the most recent interview on Will’s coming-out.
NOAH the actor said it felt like a fucking press-conference. Noah the gay actor for a gay boy said there was a lot of pressure to deliver. what the actual fuck was that writing
He even talks about essentially disassociating while doing the performance and not really processing anyone else being in the room or what they were doing like they really should've gone with an intimate coming out scene between Will and Joyce alone (and Mike could've accidentally overheard it too)
Call me Mike Wheeler because I'm about to make a goddamn speech.
We haven't lost yet, and we won't.
Either the Duffer Brothers are LITERAL CARTOON VILLAINS who have managed to produce the biggest queerbait in history, or they are keeping Byler as a 'plot twist' until the last episode. Which sucks- I know, I was expecting it to be in episode 7 too, but Mike knows now.
I think after the coming out scene, with Will calling Mike his Tammy, we're all feeling pretty doubtful. I do too, I literally threw off my headphones and had to take a second to recover during that scene because oh my god, it looks hopeless after this.
But it's not- trust me,
So far, in season 5 alone, we have gotten: - The conversation with Robin; "to make out?-" "-to date?" - The byler field scene - Multiple shared looks - "I like dick" ANOTHER SHARED LOOK BETWEEN MIKE AND WILL, cmon why would they add that? - Pipegate and the water / emotional symbolism of that. - The byler hug at the begging of volume 2 - Mileven's relationship seems to be entirely platonic, I have not picked up on a single amount of romantic subtext with that - Vecna saying that 'some minds don't belong in this world' cmon you REALLY think that they're going to prove him right? -Will asking Robin about Vickie and how they got together, to which she said that she came out to someone first before they got together- and after Will came out to basically the entirety of Hawkins, I'm pretty confident Mike and Will are getting together after that. -Will downplayed his powers, it would make sense for him to downplay his feelings for Mike too so he doesn't feel more heartbroken. (credit to @forget-the-name-of-this-one for that one)
AND the painting lie has still. not. been. addressed. Do we think they're gonna leave that unfinished.
Not to mention that volume 1 alone made so many people in the GA realise that byler had a chance of being canon, why would they do that if it wasn't?
And goddamnit, the biggest piece of evidence for me? YOU DONT WRITE A SLOWBURN REJECTION! They are saving it until the last episode, trust me. We have not built up YEARS of analysis for this not to be canon.
I think the funniest part of the coming out scene is when Will says he doesn't like girls and Mike has a full body reaction and Lucas is about to look into the camera like he's on the office.
Like that is the face of man whose been knowing this shit for a while. He was NOT at all surprised.

RIP to the person I was when I first saw this frame. I thought my life was about to be changed irrevocably. For a whole second, the universe was going to be realigned forever.
You know the ironic thing is the same people who say : “ it makes sense for Will to learn the important lesson that first crushes aren’t everything (and it would be better if he ended up happy with an epilogue boyfriend)” would be absolutely irate if El had that ending instead .
Even if it makes WAY MORE SENSE for her narratively. She’s the one who said Mike was her “FIRST boyfriend “.
She’s the one who was making out with Mike the whole summer but in that same season asked Max “how do I know what I like?”
Something she should have learned before dating anyone . And max says in response to not let the men in her life (like Mike) dictate what she likes or chooses . Because “there’s more to life than stupid boys”. Maybe El , a week after getting out of the lab , and learning what a friend was, shouldn't have been kissed and asked out on a date? Right before the 1st kiss she even asked Mike if ‘he’d be her brother’ and asked if they'd go 'as friends' to the snowball. And Mike couldn't even explain to her how friends/siblings/romantic partners are different before he kissed her.
After Mike kissed her and asked her out, they were then seperated. After this she watched soap operas all day, where the main character rushes into a relationship with a character named Mike Roy. Maybe El [romanticized] what her relationship with Mike wheeler could be like in the future because of this.
ps they weren't endgame in the soap. El was maybe never 'in love' with Mike but the idea of him. (Because she had platonic/familial love for him) and subconsciously wanted to be a normal girl. In s4, she felt like the relationship not working and Mike not saying he loved her , was her fault. Because (in s4) she felt like she “didn’t belong anywhere” and had no friends (in Cali) and struggled to assimilate to a normal life .
She lied to Mike in s4 to keep up the facade of being “normal” cause that’s what she wanted (to be normal and accepted). She wanted to fit-in and belong (and have a boyfriend) like a 'normal girl' .Mike may have represented conformity to El-just like El represented it for Mike. Down to the gendered (color coded outfits).
Maybe El once she learns more about the world and herself can find someone who is a better fit for her later on. Maybe instead of the tired over done trope of 'gay best friend learns to get over their crush and move on with an epilogue bf’ .The Duffers do something subversive instead: and not the trope that's been done 100s of times .
